Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll. Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll
The Airplane blew me away when they first came out, I loved Surrealistic Pillow, I liked After Bathing at Baxter's and enjoyed Volunteers. Then they came out with this and they just dumped me right on my head. It's like they reworked some of their oldest stuff for grown-ups. really cool grown-ups. Slick, professional, inventive, and seriously cookin'
Indeed, one of the Airplane's best live recordings. There's a LOT of bad ones...and remembering seeing them half a dozen times in concert, the performance in RI in '68 stands out tied for the best show ever, with Hendrix in the same hall, same year.
BTW....Jack Cassady also played Bass on Hendrix's Voodoo Chile. Small world :-)
So what is the "pointed little head"? ... that's what I want to know...am I the only one with a dirty little mind? Did Grace think of the name of the album...lol...sounds very Grace like :)
@californiaportugee Yes Grace saw Jack on the cover passed out and said " Bless its pointed little head" I saw or read this I thing it was their manager who was being interviewd and I can't think of his name dammit I can see his face.
Haha, ONLY Grace could come up with such a phrase!
ghoula69 got it right, Jeff Tamarkin shares in the liner notes of "BIPLH" exactly the story of Grace seeing this photo of Jack passed out and saying "Well, bless its pointed little head!"
I remember the interview they gave the NY Times in the 60's. The reporter asked "What are your musical goals?" And Kantner and Slick responded "We want to get louder." Priceless!
This is THE live album of Airplane music. These guys were at the top of their form. Cassidy was, and still is for me, one of the most inventive and lyrical bass players of t he era. In an interview, Gracie said that one of the joys of the band for her was listening to Jack. Absolutely.
Agreed - awesome document left behind by an awesome band - in terms of talent and musicanship, Airplane were best of their breed. Jack and Gracie on this album are off the charts great - Bear Meld...
It was in 68 that I discovered FM. The Airplane/ Procol Harum and Spirit were at the top of my list You could still find The Doors and a few others on AM at the time, but these bands had 1 or 2 singles on AM and that was it
I grew up in NYC so I knew what was going on 'underground' - got in on the 'ground floor' of FM in '65/'66, heard bands in the City etc. Most of the big late 60's bands didn't do much on the pop charts and didn't get much AM airplay. Airplane had only 2 , same with Doors, Hendrix I think had only 1 that got airplay in NYC. Butterfield never got any airplay or made the top 40, Dead didn't until much later etc. By '66/67 the AM airwaves didn't represent the taste of a big percentage of us kids.
The Airplane's true masterpeice. The band is at their finest here. Everybody shines. Grace takes it to another level, as do Marty and Paul. Jorma never sounded as razor sharp and brilliant. Jack is in a league all his own. And the masterful and driving drums of the late Spencer Dryden is the engine that drives this train. If you can only have just one record by the Airplane this is THE ONE. My Dad
wanted to smash my (1st) copy of this album when he saw the cover with Jack passed out.
I agree dude. Its unbelievable. Short and sweet, but just incredible. I bought it recently on cd and i blast it out. My dad's like ''what the fuck?'' but who cares lol.
I saw the airplane in 1968 at the Aragon in Chicago with Blue Cheer (so loud you couldn't hear what they were playing which was just as well). Unfortunately, I was 16 and we left early in the Airplane's set to beat 'curfew'. Dumb.
A lot of their live stuff sounds really pretty bad to me but this record was always one of my favorites - I'm sure they never sounded any better than this.
Jack Casady is an amazing bass player...this is the perfect example of his playing.....Thank you for putting this version here. I have been having a hard time finding it. Peace!!!
Big influence on Geddy Lee's bass playing in the early days.

Jack's bass - yes he absolutely KILLED on this track. His bass dominates the entire melodic background and rythmic complexity of this.

Reached. Jorma is a great guitarist and Grace is more powerful the feminine voice of the rock. That vibrato. I love Jefferson Airplane.

Grace likes James Joyce - someone once said sounds like a banshee when she gets off! I agree! Is she Irish?

Love Jacks bass playing in this.

I love the way Jorma bends the string at the very end, slowly resolving the discordant note until it's in tune with Jack's bass. Yes ma'am.
