Its so cool how amazing these guys have a way to defend themselves from predators. Beautiful color markings. Its pretti cool to disguise there selves with distinctive snake prints against humans and animals. :) Thanks for sharing! In real life, I never seen caterpillars like that anyways. I seen hairy ones before.

Oh my word! I found one of these in my yard once, a few years ago. It totally freaked me out when I saw it! But I thought it was so cool once I decided to take a second look at it. When I told my mom about it she didn't believe me or just thought i was crazy. XD But it is so stinkin cute. And it looks like Catterpie! :D

I KNEW I'd eventually figure out what Caterpie was based on. It makes sense that they'd base it on something as spiffy as this little fella'. Also, once you notice that it's not a snake, it's FREAKING ADORABLE. That smell can't be pleasant, though.

The smell is derived from the spicebush chemicals. It smells somewhat like spicebush twigs, but the caterpillar produces acetic acid as well and the entire smell starts be smell like skunk. Lets just say that I go too close and tried too many takes to get the best shot of the caterpillar doing this trick. Everything was becoming overwhelming with skunk smell.

Since it feeds on the spicebush--and judging by our poor host's coughing--I bet it smells and feels like a huge bunch of chili peppers being over-fried. (I once made that mistake, ugh cough cough, the active ingredients in the little peppers turned to gas!)
