  • Tactically speaking, it would be easier for farmers to defend a causeway militarily if their heavy weapons were already on site, hidden from view at their end, allowing them to run there quickly, thus a small number could hold off a greater enemy army for days, water is the most valuable logistical need. If the water froze over, well, they were done anyways. But the religous thing sounds more romantic.

  • Easy, put a Christian site close to a pagan site to stamp at the "devils"

  • Maybe the weapons were thrown there by warriors swearing off war and devoting themselves to peace? Perhaps it was ceremonial, a leader throws a weapon into the water before appearing before the monks to discuss peace? It could be that after burying a dead warrior his weapons were tossed into the water by monks as a gesture to indicate he would be fighting no more? I love a mystery but I just don't enough about this period, which is why I love this interesting series!
