  • I love the way these guys are so secretive about the most trivial thing. The artform is almost dead due to CG and they're still living in the 80's clinging to their "secret" methods of the Dick Smith era.

  • @coredor

"I love the way these guys are so secretive about the most trivial thing"

It was a joke dude. Chill. No huge secret. I found a bit of plastic lying around the workshop. Don't remember what it was.

BTW I work in high end CGi animation. HappyFeet, docos etc

  • ITS A TRAP!

  • So, what happened to all of the masks after filming? LFL Archives?

  • @AlderaanBoy

Yup. All shipped back to the ranch. The material in many of the masks has a very short useable life before crumbling into dust.

Sometimes only flexible for a year before going hard, cracking and crumbling away.

When foam latex is used it has about the same lifespan as a rubber band but that depends on light exposure, temperature , humidity etc.

  • @GregOrca That is actually heartbreaking.

  • I want one.

  • You can't repel detail of THAT magnitude!

  • ITS A TRAP!

  • Fantastic work, I love how you guys made motion for the Mon Cal's nostrils. It really makes it appear realistic.

  • Wear that thing and you will be given free access into area51

  • @RobertsDigital

Sshhhh. Don't tell anyone! That's how I've been getting all the free strawberry ice-cream.

  • IT'S A TRAP!!

  • its a trap

  • ITS A TRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!1

  • I love Ron Mueck's work - I didn't realise he had a brother, Richard!

This is a really cool animatronic head! Nice work Richard, the sculpture is beautiful!

  • Great work! I like how you did the eyelids. Is there anything between the lid and the eye so the lid can slide so smooth?

  • Hi Yes. The lids deliberately rub the cornea with a low friction substance so there is zero gap just like a real eye.

I could tell you what it is but then I'd have to kill you. (Lucasfilm orders)

  • @GregOrca Hmmm let me guess... Low friction substance used on Star Wars... must be Astroglide!!!

  • @rustoxide ...nice....

  • Great work!

What brand 6 channel radio did you use, and how many movements did it have total?

Did you use any servo mixing or just basic controls since it was a background character?

  • This head had 10 servos using 2 futaba radios.

It used mostly Hitec servos and one or two futaba servos.

No real need for mixing, just a couple of y-leads for the nostrils and mouth corners.

Some serious mixing in our Nemoidian though!

  • ITS A TRAP!

  • Servo controlled cables running to the back of the neck?

  • Hi . All the servos are inside the head quite close to the mechanisms. The only thing coming out of the neck was a power cord that ran to the battery that we kept in the costume for easier access for swapping and recharging.

  • BRa BRa ba ba BRA

  • O___________________O

  • hahaa! NICE and easy comment :P

  • Awesome :O

  • Wow!

    That is very nice!
