Some time later King Jehoshaphat of Judah made an alliance with King Ahaziah of Israel. Together they built a fleet of trading ships at the port of Ezion-geber. Then Eliezer some of Dodavahu from Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat. He said, "Because you have allied yourself with King Ahaziah, the LORD will destroy your work." So the ships met with disaster and never put out to sea. 2 Chronicles 20:35-37 (NLT) This should explain why Paul said don't be unequally w/unbelievers!

@ImDelightfullyMe A lot of Christian rappers seem to think so. Some I like, but most are as interested in glorifying themselves as they are glorifying Christ. We must realize in everything we do, we are showing devotion to something or someone - and honoring that through our actions of being a producer or cultivator of the spirit it bears.
@jwbrantley1 So, we should ask ourselves: is the message I listen to, I socially endorse, and what I put into my spirit, is it glorifying to GOD? And most importantly, is this what He is asking me to do or focus on at this time, or is there another instruction that is to take more precedence at this time. You cant mix the 2. Gospel artist need to be sanctified to the Lord instead of concerned about appeal & record sales. I hear more auto-tune in Gospel than ever. A couple gospel songs, i thought it was T-Pain. Separate the 2.
@pastorblove Auto tone was not created by tpain. auton tune is not evil or secular. auto tone was used in gospel songs long before people started using it in so called secular music.
@uniquesongstress Roger Troutman of Zapp made the autotune famous. History repeats itself. No doubt the older songs using it were copying Roger. Point blank gospel artist should be led by the Holy Spirit instead of trying to make a hot song that will sell. The ones that did have anointing ie Kirk & Fred H, sound tapped out now and are running of the residue of an old anointing.
"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?"- 2 Corinthians 6:14
@BYRD1014 Unequally yoked together with unbelievers. In scripture, Jesus mostly hung around, and with, sinners. But, He had a bigger influence on them than they did on Him
@ocbfdog then how does that apply to music. The bible also says do everything for the glory of God,how does listening to secular music glorify him if you dont mind me asking?
@BYRD1014 1. You assume that Gospel artists that associate with secular artists are being influenced for the negative, and that is not true. You look at the relationship between one of the Clark sisters and Missy Elliot. You never know how interacting with people can present the Gospel. 2. There are plenty of songs that glorify God that aren't necessarily classified as Gospel. Artists like PJ Morton, Stevie Wonder, and the socially-conscious artists of the seventies affirm this.
@ocbfdog I'm not saying all are influenced but some are and if you were them, are you willing to potentially be turned away from God,is that a risk your willing to take because the fact of the matter is,it does happen. Yes,some secular artist do make some songs about God,but just because they do,you can eliminate the other songs that they also make that has nothing to do with God and some of the things they sing about are not even of God. Not saying they are bad ppl.
Be in the world but not of it. From an artistic standpoint I think the Church takes it too far and starts biting what the World is doing. Ex; everyone got a remix to "A Millie" or "I wanna Rock" that's fine but put your own spin to it so people don't think "Wayne got saved?" From a spiritual standpoint I don't have a problem with certain songs from non Christians that have good content "Brown Skin Lady" "S.E.X." but let's be discerning about it. "How Low Can You Go" ain't the most edifying song.
i am 12 and just now started to listen to different type of music other than gospel and what i have found is that some music is into satanism when i grow up i want to be a gospel singer and you will never find me putting secular artists on my album however like you said some secular music is ok you just have to be aware of what you listen to as of beyonce, kanye, rihanna, and Jay-z they are the main people who are into satanism go to vigiland citizen and find out a little bit more of this
I don't have a problem with christians singing inspirational music or tasteful secular music. That being said, we need more songs that reverance God. Even the most popular christian songs today seem to focus on how I made it, or MY favor, or MY blessing or MY breakthrough. Don't get me wrong, some of that is good. WE just need a better balance--especially in our african american churches.
"can you mix the 2..." simple...no. just as 1 must choose Life or Death. The Kingdom of God Isn't a Game of, "let's co-lab w/the secular world." Christ died 2give mankind a Choice, & if we(Christians) feel that in ALL we do we can't do w/o Christ being the main thing then, hey, then mix. But confusion through music is a quick, easy&convenient gateway for the enemy.
When I was a teen I changed the lyrics 2a few secular songs since that's what young people would relate2when they listened.
I honestly don't understand why this is such a big topic...how about not letting anything/one change your mindset about God...I'm sorry, but if secular songs turn you away from God...were you really ever strongly tied with God to begin with?? If a secular song has a positive, clean message...I don't there's anything wrong with it -_-" That's like saying "This food/fashion was created by a worldly person...so you shouldn't eat it/wear it"...
I have always made my living through music and I have every intention of continuing to create and enjoy secular music. The point I want to raise is that the black church has been operating under a spirit of self-hatred by allowing all sorts of opera and classical music to be played in the church, but turning their nose up at jazz!
@steviechords I strongly agree with this. I have also noticed that self-hatred, even people going so far as to say "well, God delivered us from that"... meaning african music, or any music outside of classical and hymns.
I do not beleive we as christians should be listening to secular music Not merely because they're not of us, but the message behind the music is not condusive to christian development or good for anyone's mind. it's with the mind we serve God Yes there are clean songs out there but why not use that time and effort to promote the name of jesus, strenghtening your relationship with God. And alot of the music out there, the sources of which they acheive beats, and lyrics is down right demonic
I think its cool to be a friend with a secular artist but not collaborating with them. I believe that if this person is not changed and not have the same views as i do why would i do a song with them? How can you make music about ridin rim and candy paint or sleeping with women in the hotel then turn around and minister on a gospel song? It doesn't add up, i guess it will make it cool to live on the fence with God then.
I believe that as long as that music has a positive message then it is ok. I love music, so I do listen to all kinds, but I never take music and blend it with my life in any way. Its all about looking at it as positive as possible.
Any way that is conforming to the world is wrong as the scpriture states what fellowship does light have with darkness. Now that being said the lost must be reached but they should'nt be reached by converting into they're world to do so. How does that show them how their life must CHANGE to be a child of God
It's About the Message...there are Gospel Singers who I can't figure out if they are my Bretheren or Not but I accept their Message (lyrics, beat, etc;)....But We as Christians Try Too Hard to Win over People to the point where we get lost in the mix. I dont have to go into a club and blend with others to win them over we can pass out church flyers from outside...Some Secular Artists do speak truth my favorites (Stevie Wonder & Lauryn Hill) I can dig what they are saying at times.
and trusting in the Word of God we know that we are ambassdors of Christ and we are to be showing a difference. We are not all stuck up or think we are more than the next person but we know that we are still being worked on by God and ourself. We also know that we are in this world but not OF this world. WE ARE SUPPOSED to be a difference. But this is my opinion and I'm not speaking for no one but MYSELF. God Bless. I sing for an audience of ONE and if you get blessed from it then I did right.
For me as a singer in Church I have always looked at myself as different and so to be like someone else or use the same music as someone else(before I got saved) I did not want to be a copy cat but I wanted people to hear the words of the song not JUST like it. But when I got saved it was the annointing that I learned which destroys the yoke of bondage and so I still didn't want to sound like everyone else. Where's the difference is what I want to know. When you are saved and believing and
funny thing when you said the comment about Jay-z's song new york, it ade me think about how in the song he says "Jesus can't save you"......and i "lol"led, but yea, knowing that He says that, I wouldn't support Jay Z in any type of arena
Why do we put so many rules on the black gospel artist on what they can do and what they can not do music is music regardless who does it if the message is good than love it but stop telling folks what is right and wrong. Someone said that it has to be godly everything that you is not godly so think about that. Work out your own soul salvation. God Bless you. Don't cast stones from a glass house that you don't want thrown back at you!
Are We Affected More By What We See or What We Hear ?
Alot of people have a problem with secualr music but they watch movies that promotes the same activity just in a visual form. I guess Im asking are movies like Madea, Friday After Next, Get Rich or Die Tryin' bad for Christains ?
I watched your vid and for some reason it stopped at 2:17...anyway, this is one of those topics that people are back and forth with...music that doesn't put my attention on Father and His will, gets no play with me...it's been a lot merging between the two in the industry...gospel heads wanna get the secular audience and the secular heads want to get the gospel audience...and how are they accomplishing this..by merging...is it right?
I believe that in the world we live in today, it is very important that you have a standard. It's no longer about what is right or what is wrong, it's about can souls be lead to Christ by the life that you live on an everyday basis. The line between gospel and secular music is getting thinner everyday. It's important that we remember what we as Christians are here for and that is to tell the world about Jesus, so we have to make sure that we misconstrue to the world who God really is.
I have a question..Anyone can answer..If your pastor says it's okay to listen to secular music it at long as it's clean...What do some of you think about that? Please respond.
if the songs are not giving our LORD glory it's not of our are LORD
colossian 3:16 let the word of CHRIST dwell in you richly in all wisdom;teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the LORD.
ephesians 5:19 speaking to yourself in psalms and hyms and spiritual songs, singing and making melondy in your to the LORD.
For those who say you are opened up to spirits while listening to to music.....
What spirit were you opened up to when you were listening to Kirk Franklin while he was at home watching pornography, but making gospel music?
Does making gospel music and living an ungodly life at the same time make the music unholy or ungodly?
If person who is not a christian at all makes gospel music does it make it not ok for a christian to listen to it? If so, how would you know if they're a christian or not
Ok. Let's flip this around a bit.... Is Tye Tribbett a hypocrite because his lyrics in "Stand Out" say "How you gonna be a praise leader, but you listen to R&B" , but his biggest hit to date "Victory" takes it's sound from Go-Go music?
How about Da Truth who said he wouldn't perform with Mary Mary because they create songs with secular artists, but he's done songs with Kirk Franklin?
This is a topic that I am wrestling with as a producer/singer . I'm 32 so I"m Hip-Hop to the heart. I love Neo soul and R&B music. And I have intwined those styles to my Gospel music. But you music be careful with what you choose to absorb musically as a christian. Music is a powerfull tool. Satan was a musician in heaven. As an artist either you serve God or Satan. If music was not created under God's anointing, It will continue to have that undertone in the music.
As a musician I can appreciate good music. PERIOD. As a Christian I realize that we serve a holy God. I think that God in His sovereignty has given us the gift of music I think that any good music reflects God in some way because it is a gift from Him We are using our talents and gifts. As far as Christian artists incorporating secular artists ill say this the Bible says(paraphrase) that the gifts of God are without repentance. God can use anyone or anything He so desires to bring himself glory
Just as the Lord can use anybody to heal, preach, teach the gospel. He can use any one or any medium to spread the word.
I am in the music biz spent all my life to now singing secular music. When I was not at church I never even heard Gospel songs, some time there is very little appeal to non believers in the types of music played in Gospel.
Therefore, how can we hope to win souls and influence the world for change if they find it too boring to listen.
Honestly, I don't think it matters where the message comes from (Beyonce, Kanye, JayZ etc) What is important is If someone out there in the world hears the message and it is a signal for change in their life.
Would Christ care? He came to save us all.. Shouldn't the music do the same? Stay blessed.
Great topic. If you check the discography of a lot of gospel artists you'll find that the they are tied to secular record labels.
Some gospel artists even go to secular producers for tracks.
Nowadays, when I listen to gospel artist I can't even tell the difference. There's samples of Prince, Michael Jackson, etc. Even your so-called gosepl rappers take cues from Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and the list continues.
I'm not sure you can define the sound of secular and gospel music. It's the message and lyrical content that seperates the two. To be honest the secular artists get a lot of what they do from the church. That makes it that much harder to define because there is no originality behind the music. People are forgetting that. Bye.

There. Must . be. A. Standard. And I do believe that there is a time and place for mostly every genre of music(realistically) but there is no hindering or remixing of the message of Christ and thats where such artists as Mary Mary fail and lose me. Simply put; If youre gonna crossover, you should be pulling others back with you,not allowing the opposite and thats what I have been seeing do far. Soo...now your message of Christ becomes lost in the beats and ways of the secular world.....

You cant mix the 2. Gospel artist need to be sanctified to the Lord instead of concerned about appeal & record sales. I hear more auto-tune in Gospel than ever. A couple gospel songs, i thought it was T-Pain. Separate the 2.
pastorblove 1 year ago
@pastorblove Auto tone was not created by tpain. auton tune is not evil or secular. auto tone was used in gospel songs long before people started using it in so called secular music.
uniquesongstress 1 year ago
@uniquesongstress Roger Troutman of Zapp made the autotune famous. History repeats itself. No doubt the older songs using it were copying Roger. Point blank gospel artist should be led by the Holy Spirit instead of trying to make a hot song that will sell. The ones that did have anointing ie Kirk & Fred H, sound tapped out now and are running of the residue of an old anointing.

If the secular song meets the standards of Phillipians 4:8, then it's all good. A lot of old school songs adhere to this scripture.

"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?"- 2 Corinthians 6:14
BYRD1014 1 year ago
@BYRD1014 Unequally yoked together with unbelievers. In scripture, Jesus mostly hung around, and with, sinners. But, He had a bigger influence on them than they did on Him
ocbfdog 1 year ago
@ocbfdog then how does that apply to music. The bible also says do everything for the glory of God,how does listening to secular music glorify him if you dont mind me asking?
BYRD1014 1 year ago
@BYRD1014 1. You assume that Gospel artists that associate with secular artists are being influenced for the negative, and that is not true. You look at the relationship between one of the Clark sisters and Missy Elliot. You never know how interacting with people can present the Gospel. 2. There are plenty of songs that glorify God that aren't necessarily classified as Gospel. Artists like PJ Morton, Stevie Wonder, and the socially-conscious artists of the seventies affirm this.
ocbfdog 1 year ago
@ocbfdog I'm not saying all are influenced but some are and if you were them, are you willing to potentially be turned away from God,is that a risk your willing to take because the fact of the matter is,it does happen. Yes,some secular artist do make some songs about God,but just because they do,you can eliminate the other songs that they also make that has nothing to do with God and some of the things they sing about are not even of God. Not saying they are bad ppl.
BYRD1014 1 year ago
@BYRD1014 And the scriptures says, " Be not UNEQUALLY yoked together with unbelievers."

Walter9801 1 year ago
"can you mix the 2..." simple...no. just as 1 must choose Life or Death. The Kingdom of God Isn't a Game of, "let's co-lab w/the secular world." Christ died 2give mankind a Choice, & if we(Christians) feel that in ALL we do we can't do w/o Christ being the main thing then, hey, then mix. But confusion through music is a quick, easy&convenient gateway for the enemy.
When I was a teen I changed the lyrics 2a few secular songs since that's what young people would relate2when they listened.
woam09 1 year ago
I honestly don't understand why this is such a big topic...how about not letting anything/one change your mindset about God...I'm sorry, but if secular songs turn you away from God...were you really ever strongly tied with God to begin with?? If a secular song has a positive, clean message...I don't there's anything wrong with it -_-" That's like saying "This food/fashion was created by a worldly person...so you shouldn't eat it/wear it"...
gothbaby6 1 year ago 7
@gothbaby6 Basically to your last statement. They have no concept of God or His message; therefore, they don't glorify God.

I have always made my living through music and I have every intention of continuing to create and enjoy secular music. The point I want to raise is that the black church has been operating under a spirit of self-hatred by allowing all sorts of opera and classical music to be played in the church, but turning their nose up at jazz!
steviechords 1 year ago

JCLIFF7 1 year ago
I believe that as long as that music has a positive message then it is ok. I love music, so I do listen to all kinds, but I never take music and blend it with my life in any way. Its all about looking at it as positive as possible.

I think the devil is so subtle that he use people to do that which will draw the people and then later mislead them.
gilbertd2174 1 year ago
This is what gets me, the church follows the world and they will not do something until it becomes popular in the world
gilbertd2174 1 year ago

God Bless. I sing for an audience of ONE and if you get blessed from it then I did right.
paedae26 2 years ago

Okay I Have A Question
Are We Affected More By What We See or What We Hear ?
Alot of people have a problem with secualr music but they watch movies that promotes the same activity just in a visual form. I guess Im asking are movies like Madea, Friday After Next, Get Rich or Die Tryin' bad for Christains ?

I watched your vid and for some reason it stopped at 2:17...anyway, this is one of those topics that people are back and forth with...music that doesn't put my attention on Father and His will, gets no play with me...it's been a lot merging between the two in the industry...gospel heads wanna get the secular audience and the secular heads want to get the gospel audience...and how are they accomplishing this..by merging...is it right?
doronimoh 2 years ago
I believe that in the world we live in today, it is very important that you have a standard. It's no longer about what is right or what is wrong, it's about can souls be lead to Christ by the life that you live on an everyday basis. The line between gospel and secular music is getting thinner everyday. It's important that we remember what we as Christians are here for and that is to tell the world about Jesus, so we have to make sure that we misconstrue to the world who God really is.

If so, how would you know if they're a christian or not
albdee705 2 years ago
Ok. Let's flip this around a bit.... Is Tye Tribbett a hypocrite because his lyrics in "Stand Out" say "How you gonna be a praise leader, but you listen to R&B" , but his biggest hit to date "Victory" takes it's sound from Go-Go music?
How about Da Truth who said he wouldn't perform with Mary Mary because they create songs with secular artists, but he's done songs with Kirk Franklin?
albdee705 2 years ago
This is a topic that I am wrestling with as a producer/singer . I'm 32 so I"m Hip-Hop to the heart. I love Neo soul and R&B music. And I have intwined those styles to my Gospel music. But you music be careful with what you choose to absorb musically as a christian. Music is a powerfull tool. Satan was a musician in heaven. As an artist either you serve God or Satan. If music was not created under God's anointing, It will continue to have that undertone in the music.
likwid2kg 2 years ago

Therefore, how can we hope to win souls and influence the world for change if they find it too boring to listen.
tahira1 2 years ago
Honestly, I don't think it matters where the message comes from (Beyonce, Kanye, JayZ etc) What is important is If someone out there in the world hears the message and it is a signal for change in their life.
Would Christ care? He came to save us all.. Shouldn't the music do the same? Stay blessed.

I don't think it's WISE to do so.
Many people who are unbelievers even look at Christian artists like "huh?" when they see them singing secular songs. So that should be a clue to us.
EdotRich 2 years ago
Everything from the clothing and fashion in the secular world has seeped into the christian community.
While I admit that I have an ear for various kinds of music, I feel that secular music should be set-apart from gospel music.
When gospel music starts becoming about the artist as opposed to the worship and ministry, then there's a serious problem.
It's not about YOU nor will it ever be about YOU. It's about GOD.
oamad0101 2 years ago
Great topic. If you check the discography of a lot of gospel artists you'll find that the they are tied to secular record labels.
Some gospel artists even go to secular producers for tracks.
Nowadays, when I listen to gospel artist I can't even tell the difference. There's samples of Prince, Michael Jackson, etc. Even your so-called gosepl rappers take cues from Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and the list continues.
oamad0101 2 years ago
I'm not sure you can define the sound of secular and gospel music. It's the message and lyrical content that seperates the two. To be honest the secular artists get a lot of what they do from the church. That makes it that much harder to define because there is no originality behind the music. People are forgetting that. Bye.
