The bleeding during the ESTROUS cycle(look it up) is vaginal discharge and a signal to males that a female is getting ready for mating. actually. a period is the shedding of the uterine walls which only higher apes have, because of a menstrual cycles. dogs bleed during their heat. but it is not a period because instead they bleed from their vaginal area due to irritation and the such. so actually 7flyinghecks was correct in his statement.

@NSMidnightMoon we never had dobermans, but I grew up in a house full of dogs and back before it was politically incorrect to have an intact dog, I do remember spots of blood from the females.

As someone who is involved in rescue, I do think that considering the overcrowded shelters and animals on the street and the unbelievable suffering because of it, we should all be getting our dogs fixed.  Look up Doberman rescues, you will see there are countless dobermans looking for homes too.
