This entire concert should be on dvd as a film much like "Welcome To My Nightmare". If only it could be a traditionaly animated movie that includes the songs and tells the story.
WOW wonderful always the LAMB does it for me, sends my vivid imagination into action every time ...This visual I feel !! ... is EYE candy a precious Gem ...
@vivelavidarocka The Musical Box is touring a recreation of this show. Check it out. They do the best job of any of the "tribute" bands in recreating the original show.
This footage was shot about 10 days before I saw them. I was dead center, front row, no obstructions as the the tube rolled out and the Slipperman crawled out. It was so amazing. I still have a sense memory of the dry ice making everything cold how black it was - and then the band appeared out of the ice as if on clouds of fog, Real in all the glory of what was going to unfold, the story flipping by on the video screens. All the while going by only to fade quickly into legend
For those of you who don't know the context this song is written, Rael (played by Peter Gabriel) stumbles upon the Colony of Slippermen, men who all encountered the Lamia, reducing them to putrid states of "slimy lumps". Rael's brother Jon became one of them, and the only cure is a visit to Doktor Dyper, and a painful procedure of castration (snipping of the balls), to obliterate the sense of obsessive love towards the Lamia. Truly a song of literate and theatrical importance.
@Thypaeon Thanks, my mom has this on wax, and ive been reading the inside for years, she tells me i gotta be on lsd to get it. She got the name Rael from this album, my middle name.
@musicman1783 yes, and I can't tell you how many times I've been asked where the name came from. I have to explain it all the time, then I have to explain the fact that Peter Gabriel was in Genesis, they are like " I didnt know he was in Genesis", damn ppl get on my nerves...
@musicman1783 Actually, Peter uses the name as a tribute to Pete Townshend-- "Rael" is a mini-opera on "The Who Sell Out". Townshend had been working on a project called "Life House" and Rael was to be the main character in that.
A great miss... There are no "official" video recordings of one of the best live acting ever made in contemporary music: "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway"...
I've seen hundreds of live performances of various types of music, and nothing compared to this tour by this group in that year. Nothing! Greetings from France. I saw them in Cleveland, Ohio. It was spooky and hard to swallow!
I TOTALLY AGREE, UTTERLY ! The whole thing changed when Steve left, I really try to make an effort, believe you me, trying to enjoy the post Hackett albums, but I can't, they are nice but I do feel that there's something missing, in their composition, the feeling, I don't know, but, maybe that's why I started buying the Hackett or the Gabriel solo albums instead of the Genesis trio pop albums, as far as I know millions of fans feel the way I do, with all due respect ...
LOL seriously at times now whenever I think of peter gabriel when he was in Genesis I am going to think of this costume, and all the other times he painted his face to where I sometimes wonder if he really is from this planet or not.
JackBlair - Most people who watch this video don't care what happened after Peter Gabriel left Genesis. Can you imagine the Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger or the Who without Roger Daltrey? Well we can't imagine Genesis without Peter Gabriel.
Jackblair - piss off. I missed this tour cause Hackett cut his hand and couldn't get tickets for the rescheduled gigs as it sold out much quicker than original show (why?) Classic album - you can play it to death and never get sick of it.
You call that silly, why? Theatrical comes to my mind instead. Which is not a reason to kick out the band (not that they did it)to the best performer/songwritter in rock history. And absolutely no, we all know by now they weren't better off with out him.
...and do you think that the silly Phil Collin's songs were to match those from Peter Gabriel times ?? Why Hackett left ...also because the stupid turning point with teenagers ballads that Collins loved . Genesis wasn't that at their glory times !
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hackett left because he wanted to have a successful solo career - wanted to be as successful as Gabriel - someone forgot to tell him that he needed to be able to SING to do that...
Jack,Hackett probably wanted a solo career and indeed on the guitar world is well recognized. What I said is that the music Genesis did from the moment of Gabriel's departure it was the comercial stuff and he dislike this.He never liked to be in Trick of the tail,a nice song but uninteresting for musicians. In a way it was a starting point for solo careers for Anthony Phillips, Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett. Yes they made money but that was all and finally disbanded lacking of ideas
Well, there was talk of them doing a new Lamb tour, but Gabriel opted out because he's working on a new album (odd, he was able to find time to do a solo tour). That was a couple years ago, just before Collins, Banks and Rutherford did the reunion tour.
pete ,what a great presence on stage!!that was always one of your strongest points beside your unique voice of course. it is true that genesis lost you when you left, but you lost them also for sure.

WE LOVE GENESIS (1969-1974) GABRIEL's ERA
sluf6 3 years ago 40
Prefer Hackett era! It wasn't until Hackett left that it went a little to pot, he was irreplacable, Collins wasn't that bad at singing gabriel,
bjackman080184 3 years ago 2
@sluf6 then you should begin to add a trick of the tail + wind and wuthering to your era :-)))

@sluf6 IMHO, Genesis remained as a great band until 1977.
