@krrwasser How do you know that homosexuality is not normal or is some form of mental illness? Do you know any gay people? Granted, maybe I did generalize but that's not off the mark for most of the country at the time; many gay bars in big cities were raided by police. "The last thing that homosexuals are is 'gay'"? That's mainly because those who are miserable is because the world is so toxic towards them, and how may I ask are you doing about the problem? Why are you even here?
@krrwasser Sal is definitely gay, it's not an "interpretation"; it's obvious to the audience since it's heavily implied that he likes other men (and eventually he fumbles around with a bellhop) but that he's terrified to do so because it would mean disaster if he were caught. The U.S. was much crueler to lesbians and gay men in the 1960s; if you were caught, it could mean prison, public disgrace, commitment to mental institutions, suicide, or even outright assault.
@krrwasser That Sal is attracted to men is not an "interpretation" - we clearly see it in this and other Mad Men episodes. Sal here is obviously implying that he would like to sleep with this man but that he is afraid to.
@diddims Looking bak on my comment its a little "wtf" i really dont kno why i said thay, love isnt based on looks. And i agree i iwsh they would have gotten together, would have been nice to see how the character of sal would have developed
@seveeona I don't think that Elliot looks unattractive; I've seen unattractive. I like Elliot; he's sweet. I think that they'd be so cute together... I can only dream, though.
"It is a masterpiece of some kind." Salvatore's line about NYC is my opinion of Bryan Batt's portrayal of Mr. Romano! He's so wonderful, and this seminal moment in Salvatore's life is just heartbreaking in its tenderness, diplomacy and disappointment.
@nicolecreature: He's hinting that he'll pay for drinks. Depending on what your job was in the corporate hierarchy of an ad firm, you would be permitted to buy meals and drinks and have them reimbursed by the company - thus, an expense account. Salvatore, being in the Art department, would not have been given one, so any drinks he would have bought would have been out of pocket.
My heart breaks for both of them every time that I watch this scene. Elliot's so sweet, and he looks so devastated... I so wanted them to end up together!
And Don and Roger are free to bed any woman that they want while these two can't even share a romantic moment?!
Regards to Bryan! He has a very good role, and he plays it very well. So tragic, that people were persecuted in those days for their sexual orientation (& still so).
@baes10 I'm not sure exactly which moment you're talking about but i think remember hearing Miles' jazz version of Concierto de Aranjuez from his album Sketches of Spain during the scene with don's mistress and all her friends. The piece is on youtube.
Not at all @ Phoenixkidd. Salvatore knows that he is gay but he also knows how dangerous this path is. I have had older gay friends tell me stories of their families sending them to mental institutions for shock treatment, arrests, beatings and killings. Another sad sad time in our country that is only now beginning to heal.
Yes. The two men are both gay. Salvatore, however, is closeted and is very paranoid of actually acting on any of his impulses in that direction. It's a moving yet understated testimony to the inner conflict many gay men of that era felt.
