Neat video! I work on these things but I still never see them flown quite like that... Plus this (not sure if its EXACTLY the same one) is 01, VMA-513 "Nightmare" kinda the flag ship jet we have because of paint job. And yes its loud as F$#K, try standing 10 feet away at full throttle, good times.
This is a pretty good little show, but if you want to see something REALLY amazing, you need to watch the British Harrier Display Team fly in person. I've seen all kinds of airshows, but NOTHING I've ever seen (F22, F35, SR71, B2) even comes close to their show. I wish they'd tour the USA someday, as they seem to only fly in European shows.
A truly amazing jet, now over 40 years old. I remember seeing one at the
Cleveland (Burke Lakefront) Airshow in 1968 or 69... looked like a UFO!
@maniacmobster ye maybe but the raptor directional ducts are an easy target to knock out but the harriers are hidden under the wings both good but both have drawbacks
vine 139. Sad to say we actually lost 2 Harriers in the Falklands, albeit not to enemy action. They took of on a sortie and never returned. No trace of them was ever found. Also the Harrier is, and never has been, supersonic in level flight. ThfWrc. you're dead right about the noise in hover. At the Southport Airshow (UK) a few years ago 3 of them took up the hover right in front of us. I couldn't hear for about a day.
'bazman85: Please don't apply to the MOD for a job as a Naval Historian just yet. They may decide that your bad manners, arrogance and, most important, your ignorance of military history preclude you. I must however admit to one mistake. We actually lost SIX Harriers. try typing "Harriers lost during Falklands War" into Google.
@bazman85: For "faggit" read faggot. For "rite" read right. Ok, English spelling lesson out of the way following your History lesson. I now think an English reading lesson is in order. Can you please point out where I used the word "missing"? If any more lessons are required you know where I am. However I would suggest that you call it a day while you're losing.
do you think im going to grammer anything properly like a "faggot" on here like a little school boy? you said no trace of them was ever found, which is a lie. so why say it bullshitter? you say, "also the harrier is, and never has been, supersonic in level flight" hmmmmm yeah makes sense that mate. so get your facts rite and check you own grammer first, or stay hush, yes?
@bazman85: I hold my hands up to the slip in grammar. A typo I'm afraid which I noticed as soon as I posted it but by then it was too late. Anyway let's move on. A life lesson this time. You cannot call complete strangers "stupid fools" ,"faggits" and "bullshitters" and expect them to take you seriously. The two aircraft in question were lost, presumed collided in bad weather. That is a fact. Now call it a day and find something more productive to do with your time.
I saw a Harrier at the Great New England air show a few years ago. It was one of the loudest things I have EVER heard. That thing SCREAMS when it is hovering. Absolutely awesome.
-->Youradumbassbarnes! How many Mach 1.0+ do you see doing Super Sonic fly-bys at airshows? it;s not legal, plus this was in the middle of San Diego! You're the dumbass!
Airspeeds in control zones tend to be limited to around 150mph, max. Anything faster is "high speed", and requires permission. A mach 0.9 low level pass is plenty fast. Permits or waivers for supersonic passes can and are granted for specific events, and can be controlled to some extent. I've seen them, both on military bases and at civilian airshows. Not necessary to break the sound barrier to impress. Try photographing a high speed pass with a still camera. Enjoy the show. Semper Fi.
I want one.

I'm almost positive they always use Marine Harriers...I know for a fact they did in 2009.

Is this a US Marines Harrier or is it the privately owned one that is doing the rounds at the air shows?
