I personally feel that hatred in any form is destructive to our psyche. If you hate others, you only hurt yourself. Politicians like to pit us against one another to keep our eye off the ball. Poverty knows no color or ethnicity but politicians use poverty, race, and class envy to divide us and sadly enough it works with many. Some of the comments here reflect that weakness we all have at times to be manipulated.

Get real, everyone is profiled, everyone makes snap judgements. I've had cops do this to me as a single mother but, you control the situation and hope that cops do too. Gates was way out of line. You can hear him in the back ground on the tapes.

A black friend of mine has a very eloquent definition of a racist. "If you think that because of your race, you are in any way better than anyone else in any way whatsoever, you are a racist" I think that if we all gave that some thought, it might help us all come to grips with who we are. All he had to do was show ID and the whole thing would have not happened. He knew the President and he was a Professor and that was that. Obama should have recused himself, and when he didn't, he should have given an unconditional apology.  They should ask these same people the question, "Were you ever given preference over an equally qualified white person because of your color?"

First, I would not have gone out on my porch without some i-d with me and someone else present because of the brutality police are known for in my community.2nd He did show him 2 forms of i-d. 3rd he asked the officer for his name and badge# and was refused. The President was right it was a stupid egoist arrest. The question that should be asked is if a so called qualified white person got so because some black persons rights were violated?

I have been on both sides of the law in my lifetime and I agree that there are police that abuse their power. All criminals abuse their power every chance they get .l I also know what can happen to a slow witted officer in a situation like this. This guy was not slow witted and was professional by the accounts of the witnesses, black and white. If you look hard for the racist boogeyman you can find it in any situation. Most people can find it at one time or another by looking in the mirror.
