I actually prefer college ball to NBA ball. I saw all of David Thompson's career at NC State- 3 X better than Jordan was while in college. The kid Marvin Vitatoe could get his arm pit up to rim level. He went on to a Wooden led UCLA Scholarship . There are amazing athelete's that don't make the NBA cause there is a lot more to Bball than running fast and Jumping high

@shaughnessy1995 Thanks for the reply,,, I've seen all of White's videos and there are none that are touching the top of the rim... when he's going for the tape at 13 feet it's an angle from below and accounting for that I think he's still 4 to 6 inches short. The alley oop missed dunk when his head is getting above the rim is still short by about the same amount.. What I'm looking for is a vid that show's someone actually touching the backboard and getting close.. it's just not out there...

These elite athletes are in another sphere entirely. For example, the world champion track star Allyson Felix weighs 120 pounds and can leg press 700 pounds and dead lift 350. If you can already jump high or run fast and you work at it like David Thompson you can definitely improve.

From what I remember it is that specific populations of people of African descent have more fast twitch (vs. slow twitch) muscle fiber. Of course this isn't true for everyone of African descent, even within the subpopulations with historic and present higher levels, we are talking about averages compared to averages of other similar size populations. He admits that he wasn't taking anything off it "I didn't have that much hang time." I suspect that his hand came very near the 13' top of the board , and he refers to this as the top of the backboard.
The dunk was outlawed while he was in college. He'd get ally oops and deposit ,not slam the ball in the bucket.

In 1958 as a 4th grader on my CYO football team I'd walk down the street w/Jackie Moran (white) and Ronald Keyes (black) w/ arms draped around one another. We did this because we were true friends and good teammates. Race only becomes an issue when idiots try to offend another human.

I actually prefer college ball to NBA ball. I saw all of David Thompson's career at NC State- 3 X better than Jordan was while in college. Thompson played in the brief era where the dunk was banned in college ball and caught ally oops and just kind of deposited it in the bucket. I used to live about a mile from the Univ of Maryland and am a Terp fan. Len Bias was great college, I'd still say that Thompson was a greater college player. I have watched nearly every critical ACC game since '69.

They always practiced dunking, and training on the dirt court helped them learn to use their leg muscles efficiently. Thompson said he felt like he was jumping a foot higher when he was on the hardwood.

Respond to this video...White slave owners and down the road racists and bigots used the word to demean African Americans to refer to some one as less than the scum on the bottom of a Catfish. Black people started to use it as a way of saying look that doesn't bother me , we'll use it our selves to make it seam like it ain't shit Nigga nigga nigga so what see so what. But its 2011 now. Time to stop. Or is it OK to you to if some one calls you a Mother Jumper ya know what I mean?

@oic869 - Funny thing about the word "nigga." I am a white and there is an unwritten rule that I can't use it. I used to do tile jobs with some very good Jamaican friends. On a time sensitive job at Georgetown University and I made all the cuts on the wet saw.
These guys kept saying "c'mon nigga" to me , you screwed up that cut "nigga" (kidding me) and referred to all of us 4 as "niggas." For some reason , I took it as a compliment but never used the word. I never felt the need. Still don't !

If not for David Thompson, perhaps MJ wouldn't have become the GREATEST. He probably would've played baseball and all of his magnificent journeys through the air would have been missed...

@RAV52 - Make no mistake MJ isn't the greatest Wilt is ! Wilt and MJ were .01 points per game in scoring. Wilt averaged 24 , count em 24 rebounds per game. Jordan averaged 6.2. I want those 18 more possessions per game that Wilt will give me. You can take that 1/100 of a point per game.

in the 60's my uncle coached Oakland SF Bay Area HS bball, St.Joes and St Liz were 2. in 69 I was 13 I heard him describe a kid who could take a quarter off the top of the backboard and leave change, I thought he was Nuts, then I saw what he saw. The kid Marvin Vitatoe could get his arm pit up to rim level. He went on to a Wooden led UCLA Scholarship . There are amazing athelete's that don't make the NBA cause there is a lot more to Bball than running fast and Jumping high

there's a lot of stories on the internet i dont believe cuz no one's ever done what the urban legends say they can do and most players lie and/or delude themselves about it talking about their hey days or the amazing things they've seen "oh yeah i could touch the top".
In fact I bet high school coaches are probably notorious for this.

@zeejustin6 Saying a player could take a quarter off the top of the back board and leave change is just a way to make the point that the dude could jump way higher than average and had special hang time. No one could actually do it. But I did see that kid get his arm pit at rim level and at 6'2 or 3 his arm being at least 3' that would put him at 13' I think the top of the back board in 13'9 amazing no matter how you spin it. You tube "the Hook" Mitchell. He did jump over a Mustang to dunk

@jcsjohnson if you look up james white trying to touch top of backboard, you should find a video of him, he comes about an inch away from actually touching

@shaughnessy1995 Thanks for the reply,,, I've seen all of White's videos and there are none that are touching the top of the rim... when he's going for the tape at 13 feet it's an angle from below and accounting for that I think he's still 4 to 6 inches short. The alley oop missed dunk when his head is getting above the rim is still short by about the same amount.. What I'm looking for is a vid that show's someone actually touching the backboard and getting close.. it's just not out there...
