Another myth buster fail and they were going so well too. They made the boat, they proved it was semi practical on a SMALL scale, WITHOUT refrigeration, then came to completely the wrong conclusion. The larger you build a boat like this the MORE practical it becomes because it has a far lower surface area to volume ratio. A full scale nuclear aircraft carrier would easily have enough power to run refrigeration in the skin of the boat to keep it together indefinitely, even in tropical water.
@Idiotsmakemesad well it wouldn't have been nuclear powered, it was dreamed up during WW2 and carriers back then weren't powered with nuclear reactors. I don't think the boat was intended to head into the tropics though. I have to agree with you, however, on the fact that the mythbusters screwed it up. It was supposed to be made with pykrete not friggin newspaper! and they just left a pile of slush sitting in alaska as well as in the lake?!
@dlneudecker Actually, that's the thing, they did it with wood pulp-based pykrete first but some tests indicated that instead of using wood pulp newspaper would actually make it even more resilient.
its like having a block of ice in freezing water. It doesn't come apart if you stand on it or if you put a motor on it... The newspaper is just what is being frozen.
the Mythbusters look at different things and try to prove them false. There is no reason this would be faked. Moreover, we would be able to see if it was faked because we see them put it in the water, and I can also tell you that frozen things don't unfreeze in near-freezing water.
i'm sure the boat being placed in salt water would have melted the ice really fast. I wonder how long it would have lasted on a fresh water lake say in april when it's still cold enough outside but not iced over
A thin protective layer would have made it last a lot longer. Especially in saltwater that may be sub-zero. Another take would be to make it a lot thicker, as it would then be seaworthy a lot longer due to the mass.
The plan was for a large block of pykrete, which would have been used as a floating island from which planes could launch an attack from. Cooling pipes would have run throughout the block further reducing the time it took to melt. It would looked more like a flat topped iceberg then any form of a boat.
If they had made the hull thicker, they would have had even better results. That was the original concept of pycrete: a massive block of sawdust filled ice with a moderate sized air craft compartment.
Absolutely. The whole point was that, as pykrete is less dense than water, it would be literally unsinkable (and most Allied shipping in the later war was sunk by U-boats out of range of air support). Maybe time constraints required them to build something with a thin hull which would freeze in time.
I'm not sure whether Pyke wanted to sail his ice ships into tropical waters either; the big British naval battles of WWII were in the iceberg filled North Atlantic: hardly tropical seas.
I got it at a work area. They were cutting up a lot of trees with chainsaws, so there was enough for me to fill atleast two water bottles. My recomendation is to get an electric sander and attack some wood, or get a (chain) saw.
I made my own pyrcete from sawdust, I'm holding it right now... I hit it very hard with the handle of a knife and it hardley chipped. This stuff is so cool!!!!
I live in Ketchikan. The water is cold here but not that cold. We actually have a warm water current that keeps us mostly rainy in the winter. Notice the sleet with no frost at the waters edge. They should have done this much farther North.

so fake it had a wooden frame under the newspaper
plkocool 1 year ago
and the idiot of the day goes to: YOU!
If you listened, they use the wood as a mold to put the newspaper on so it has a shape when it freezes.
872463051 1 year ago 2
oh what the fuck man
i know what they said but the mold is just a shape the newspaper goes on daah!!!!!!
and the idiot of the day goes to: 872463051 or
YOU!!!!!!
plkocool 1 year ago
Not sure if you are know the phrase "too dumb to insult," but that's about where you are right now for that statement.
Let me just try to understand what you are saying by asking you this: How does having a mold make it fake?
872463051 1 year ago 3
the mold is what made the shape then they take it off!!!
plkocool 1 year ago
yes, that is the point of a mold. You use it for the shape, then u take it off... How does that make it fake?
872463051 1 year ago 2
because that paper even in freezing water would easily come apart plus with that 30 pound engine they would be in water in less then 5 mins
plkocool 1 year ago
its like having a block of ice in freezing water. It doesn't come apart if you stand on it or if you put a motor on it... The newspaper is just what is being frozen.

that's exactly what i meant but it will still unfreeze fast 5 10 mins
