@davidbrown303 Yes, Who can compete with a high resolution display? That might be the reason why this roll-up display never took off. Nevertheless, you cannot roll up an iPad. So this design has its own unique application.
why? di you think the CD is that bad? The also invented the DVD. But soon it will all be Blue Ray. I saw a video were philips was coming out with a 3D TV now that's interesting!
That`s true I think every country has it`s own bad things. BTW the last time we had snow was 4 years ago or so. If I buy something I pay 19%tax! On tobacco 60%! And on Gasoline 80%!!!
e-Ink technology appeared in some products recently. The prototype shown in the video probably didn't make it, but the technology is real, just in a different form and product.
I think launching with a B/W version is such a bad idea. The market is so beyond B/W now, it's not longer like when they launched the first versions of the palm, ipod or cellphones.
Customers have so many choices of alternative products eg iphone, or smartphones that are comparable to this technology which already come with colour screens.
B/W display has its own appeal. Most books and newspapers are still printed in B/W. If this paper-like display stays with this narrow applications, there is still a good market for the product. At least it is a good substitution for paper.
This company is still around after they spun off from Philips Electronics. Google "polymer vision" and you will find their website. While on it, google "E-ink" and "electronic paper" too. The technology is still alive and well. There is a market for it.
Plasticmind, there is no refresh rate. It's a static screen created by magnetized particles. It uses no power until a page turn. Also, Theophrastus is incorrect. There is almost no eyestrain using E-Ink technology. Because there's no refresh rate, it's comparable to reading a newspaper.
refresh rate seems fine to me^^ maybe there's some jitter b/c of the different video refresh rate which doesn't say anything about its real life appearance.
*sigh*... When will the Americans get a handle on the Aussie accent... (pronounced Auzzie...) This guy is clearly Australian and from a show called "Beyond Tomorrow"... *sigh*
I just love how all you retards are so proud of yourselves for knowing this ghey little show or being able to tell ghey brits from ghey aussies. Yay for you! I'm clapping! Really! Yay!
Doesn't look very practical. I can't see myself carrying that thing around in order to upload stuff onto it. If it had built-in wifi and web-browsing capabilities it might be worthwhile but otherwise it just seems like an expensive toy to be used between reading stuff on your laptop and reading stuff on proper paper. I also don't like the fact that it appears to be back-lit as back-lighting usually makes for eyestrain.
This is suppose to replace paper in the future. Imagine unrolling the same scroll at your breakfast table every morning and the morning news is updated to the minute. For people who are used to newspaper it is better than reading news on a computer display. Another application is to reduce the size of current cellphone into a pen size device, yet provide a large display for other function.
This tech has been around for sometime. I have seen another news article few years ago about using this technology in large banners hanging off store's ceiling for advertisement. It is convenient to update the ad. with a click of a button.

Fold? No. But if it can roll tightly enough, it's a moot point.
