...another 10 months delay for Boeing's nightmare-liner... several companies canceled their orders and are suing Boeing for the delay... no more sales since early this year.... good look with this "platic-bomber"... - Airbus is up and away :-)
Non-retracted Landing Gears are part of the Test Flight in order to check the planes ability and engines to climb when the Landing Gear cannot be retracted for some reasons.. A Landing Gear does affect he Airplanes aerodynamics and flight behavior.. That s why its not retracted.. Once this test is done, the Test Pilots will retract it and continue the Test Flight. :-)
1 --- Because some people like to look at were they live from high above the sky. The sky is peaceful, its brings us that much closer to mother nature.
2 --- Companies do it to look for a new way to make more money.
3--- Because we use today's knowledge to build the technology for tomorrow which, in turn benefits both the present and the future.
4 --- That we can continue to advance and make the world a better place to live, and proving that number 3 (my response) is why we are here today.
Okay, after just making my previous posting, I now see the prior comments regarding the landing gear retraction issue. 'Thank you' to mightyhorsey, tzkelley, and krmtrains for those relevant comments. It makes sense.
Humm. In this short video, the pilot never retracted the landing gear. Must have been due to some test flight parameters. The task might have been performed several minutes later into the test flight.
Can someone please state how this is such a big deal? Does it run on water? Does it fly around the world in a few hours. Does it cure aids or cancer in flight? Or is it just another distraction to real world issues like ever growing government corruption?
@FoxifiedNutjob This is a big leap forward in aircraft technology that will provide more comfortable travel at a lower cost and with less impact to the environment. If you want to hear about government consiracy theories instead, just watch Fox News 24/7.
they dont want to risk the wheels getting stuck in the up position first flight. they usually have a syllabus by which they go through and they go through one system at a time.
@kurtthewurt Actually, they did eventually retract the gear (Boeing has some pictures from later in the flight with the gear up) but you are essentially correct.
They do initial handling tests with gear down and T/O flap so if there is any problem with hydraulics etc they can return to the field quickly in that configuration
it's a nice plane, economically and environmentally, but it doesn't inspire awe like the 380. The 380 is a fucking beast! not saying one is better than the other, though.
I live in Sequim, West of Seattle and saw it fly over at about 5000' a few times during this flight. I can tell you that even with the gear down it was quieter than other smaller aircraft that fly over here everyday. Actually my husband (a commercial pilot) saw the 787 fly over on the 14th!
Because it was broadcast live in the UK on CNN, Sky News and on the net from Boeing's website. Also, I've been tracking the progress of the first flight via a well known blog whose editor is based at Paine Field and the 787 had been on the ground at Everett until first flight, under going taxi tests etc.
How so? Airbus doesn't have a plane of such technology. Rated at 20% cheaper to operate than any other plane of it's passenger capacity, carbon fiber/titanium construction, not to mention the planned passenger configurations/amenities. I don't think there is a comparable plane as of yet.
Im sure theyve thought of that and come up with a good reason, we're almost in 2010 btw, its not like planes were just recently invented...they know how they work...and about the noise...theres a freaking airport, im sure the civilians are used to the noise...
Feircejaguar your sure are you , were in almost 2010 hahaha , ya and 29,000 kids die everyday of preventable illnesses you degenerate, everyday , how do you know people don,t mind are you Jesus,do you read minds , n what do you mean calling people civilians , that's what govt inbreeds call people ,your comment does more damage than mine , keep up the great work !!
Why are you drifting away from the point that its OK for Boeing to have their 787 maiden flight over a city...And i was referring to our knowledge of flight aviation thats increased over the years, remind me where i said anything about preventable illnesses? If youve come here just to argue about what Boeing did yesterday, be my guest...I'd rather just enjoy the video and the plane for what they are and be on my way...you can go on about "govt inbreeds" and me being Jesus.
Yes, if one wanted to compare a Boeing plane to the A380, I'd pick one of the 747's, probably the new one, the 747-8, but it really doesn't compare, either. The A380 is out there by itself.
My guess would be, either to research low speed conditions and how the drag affects stability. My second guess would be not to speed up too much to get the press cams catch it ;-)
I'll take Boeing's approach and prioritize pilot input over the Airbus approach and computer taking controls over a pilot.

Why do we design new aircraft? Why do you want to drive a model T Ford if you can have a Focus RS?

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) Why do we always want to design new aeroplanes?
(3) Why do we think that building new aeroplane is a representation of success?
(4) What do we prove through designing and building new aeroplane?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

To blackwolfsquadron: it's not raising it's landing gear as a safety precaution for the pilots in case anything happens they can quickly land.
