we are LUCKY if we get any monsoon rain here in LA. the mountains keep all the moisture east of banning :( but we do get mild dust storms in the fall when the santa anas rip through...and wildfires...
For those that don't live here, that storm probably originated south of the Tucson area and came up I-10 to Phoenix. We have the Mogollon Rim and high country which surrounds Phoenix about 75-100 or so miles northeast of Phoenix (5000-7000' elevations, cooler temps and pine trees up there). That is how those storms start off looking like a solid wall of clouds in the late afternoon. When the weather is like this, it's not uncommon to hear of Tucson really getting nailed and flooded.
Yep, but it's nothing compared to the electrical storms that follow. We just had one of those storms last Thursday. Sometimes, during the thunderstorm, you can smell burning brush or palm trees that were struck by lightning. We can get 1-2 inches of rain from one of those storms. Sometimes, it's hard to get a full-night's sleep when a storm comes through. We get those thunderclaps that sound like a bomb went off if it was close.
Great time lapse of the growth of Cumulonimbus and the oncoming "Haboob". Just need to tie the camera down next time and remember to collect it before nature really starts rockin' right about dusk each evening during the monsoon season here in the valley.
So far me on the dividing line between Scottsdale and Phoenix I have had a few strong monsoons and dust storms I even had a strom dust devil rip my nieghbors tree branches off and scatter them all over the place.
cool video!
