Dear Kristin: please stop putting your kids on your records and in your videos. You are of the rare breed of artist that continues to make incredible art despite having children. Let's not push it.
This song is absolutely brilliant (Kristin can never go wrong), but the video doesn't do it justice -- great photography and everything, but it just doesn't fit the song
(never mind though, Kristin is fantastic anyway) :)

so, do you *know* you're a musically clueless moron, or are you oblivious to that too?
wait, don't tell me: you've never played a musical instrument in your life. (wow - how did he *know*??)
here's one for you: what, specifically, is different about the "two different songs" that make up Hook In Her Head? tell me all about it. i can't *wait* to hear.
at least you understand that the conflicts in the early Muses songs were due to differences in Kristin's and Tanya's styles. right?
i myself love those very collisions, and don't think the transitions could have been handled more masterfully. they're one of the things that define early Throwing Muses and make that first album, with its exquisitely chaotic feel, one of my favorites.
ah, k. it's a magnificent video, btw. the photography is just top-notch...that contrasty contrast is gorgeous (i'm a photographer if you couldn't tell ;). bra-freakin'-vo, sir. bravo.
Martin Newell recorded a song titled "Clara Bow" with the Cleaners from Venus in the late 70's-early 80's. I think a lot of songwriters are drawn to this subject. Kristin does well with it too.
Great song. Thanks so much for posting. I'm pretty sure everybody knew who Clara Bow was if they searched this song and really appreciates your efforts. It's a vintage peice, in a way, just by association.
Ms Hersh may as well have called it "Jim Morrison". I was merely pointing out an effect of incongruity. Nor do I expect a direct relation to an "immediate manifestation". See I AM THE WALRUS, FROM A BUICK SIX, SHAMAN'S BLUES, or DANCING MADLY BACKWARDS (on a sea of air) as examples. I'll look into Prefab Sprout as well, thank you much. Might be better for MS Hersh herself to clarify the matter.
Kristin damn sure knows who Clara Bow is. After Clara Bow retired, she moved out to the desert with her husband and sons and then lost control of her brain. That inspired this song.
THANK YOU. No manifestations of immediate title here, I presume Clara Bow is the subject (but that message was a little confused). But yeah, it could be I am the walrus, something wicked this way comes, the kids don't get it, or best of all "The Piano Has Been Drinking - Not me" by Tom Waits. I won't be led into anything. This has been enough, and i know a lot about music and don't need the philosophic bulsh**t. It's a good song. Oh, and Kristin knows. We're on a first name basis?
a lot of her fans call her by her first name. she's a very accessible person. once you have a good idea of who She is and how she views herself, her fan base and her "stardom," calling her "Kristin Hersh" - especially in a conversation in which everybody knows which Kristin you're talking about - feels inappropriately stiff and distant, like calling someone you know more personally by their full name every time you mention them to a mutual friend. it's formal to the point of awkwardness.
I'll take that into consideration.! "Clara" was an artist I discovered after the fact. This makes it all the more sweet. I've listened to Indie for ages, but somehow missed "Clara." I was certainly aware of Throwing Muses and Tanya Donelly's solo and band eforts, but not Kristin Hersh's solo efforts.I can go back and collect all her CDs and experience them as something new. There was this great band and they went on to do great solo careers. For some reason, "Strings" reached out to me. Thanks.
hey, if you want to become more familiar with the Woman behind the music (as well as the hilarious genius of Her sons), follow @kristinhersh on twitter. you'll feel like She's your friend in no time. at least i did.
Why call it that? Has Kristin Hersh even seen any of her films? What could she possibly know about Clara Bow? Perhaps she should take a look -- she might learn something -- if nothing else.
Goodness, aren't we prickly! My understanding of the creative process is that words, titles and images may be symbolic or iconic (something CB certainly is) and open to interpretation. If you insist that every title directly relate to its most immediate manifestation, you're going to be disappointed time and time again. I especially recommend that you do NOT listen to Prefab Sprout's album "Steve McQueen". In any case, you can rest assured that Kristin knows who Clara Bow is.
Yep, so in other words the meaning of this song's title may not be what it appears. If you believe this to be so, you'll be disappointed. Never use one word when ten (or in this case 20) will do.

Kristin....you can't go through your entire life making angry songs all the time. I't s good to sing a bout nice things once in a while like pretty birds singing in a meadow.
The first time I heard Kristin's voice back in the 90s I pictured her to look like a tall skinny wasted junky. Now, she looks so fresh and healthy. and here she even looks like Hillary Clinton! hmmmm, maybe Hillary clinton shoots up some smack?
And when she goes on tour, she does it with the whole family : she's got four sons, the elders take care of the younger ones. Their father, Kristin's husband, drives the bus.
