  • The Landscape looks exactly like Northern Alberta Province to me.

    Cold and Bleak.

Rig welding for pipeline construction companies.

Been there, done that back in 1983.

Nothing much has changed other than the Rig Welding rates.

Back in 1983, 1984 the rig welding rate for pipeline welding was around $ 36.00 Canadian per hour, sometimes as high as $ 40.00 Canadian per hour.

Now I live in Thailand, buying and selling gemstones....far more fun....and NO snow or bleary cold weather....thanks.

  • @happyharv1 You're Welcome!

  • thanks man

  • @aadamamax I'm sorry I can't be of any more help.

  • great vid man were u at i would luv to get on the pipeline any way i could. fairly new to the biz 2 years on job none pipeline just need to get my foot in door to show what i can doany suggestions thanks

  • @aadamamax The only thing I can suggest is apply with different Welding Companies who do Pipeline work.

  • i have a buddy that is a pipeline welder, and wants me to get into it with him. nice video thanks for sharing

  • @rcgibbs07 Thanks a lot for watching and commenting!

  • hey i want to be your helper and get paid big bux! get back to me

  • @junghoon79 I responded to your question in the Hydrogen Sulphide Hot Tap Video.

  • hey i noticed that no one uses auto darkeners and they use the old fiber-metal helmets what welder gen sets are you using millers or Lincoln pipe liners

  • @8tyman8 Some use Miller and some use Lincoln. It's a personal choice.

  • do you guys weld all pipe downhand /stove ?

  • @M1XXMATT All overland Pipelines in Canada are welded Downhand as per Pipeline Code.

  • Very nice video

could you tell me did you buy your grasshopper , ground, or did you make it and if you made it how did you? do you have plans or instructions Thanks

  • @bobwas4066 Everything we use is purchased. A grasshopper can easily be made by welding a piece of Angle Iron to a Locking C-Clamp Vice Grip or similar tool.

  • it's my firstrst time to in the class at the SMAW NC 2 in the TESDA philippines

  • @andoyomark80 Kool! Good luck in school!

  • ..OK...hard to tell in the video, but it was sparking more like pipe rod... The comment about small bunk house, although I've met guys that worked on pipelines and lived out of their campers for weeks...my brother did that on logging jobs too.....just kidding about the jail...do you have to pay much for the room and board at the camp..? I've seen online articles about these man-camps for welding and oil rigs...they never address the financial part of it...

  • @dougspair LOL! No worries bro I figured it was a joke. Why would I want to try jail out? LOL!

The employee doesn't pay anything out of pocket to stay in a camp. The company he/she works for is charged by whomever owns the camp. I have no idea how much was charged for me to stay there..

  • are you capping that with 7018..?

  • @dougspair No we're capping with 7010.

  • @dumbFUCKfabrication... "sorry boys that ain't mainline". WTF????? What a dumbass! You have no clue what the fuck yet talkn about. Fuckn wanna-be. Your only a mechanic because you couldn't pass a fuckn 1G test. Blow hard.

  • DAMN THAT job looks scary one mess up and ur fired ??

  • @KRAYSLiCK999 There's a little bit of leeway but if you consistently get repairs you'll be asked to leave.

  • Low buck make like a rubber band and snap the fuck out if if

  • @millerkiller1918 Don't mind "Low Buck Fabrication." He's proven himself to be mildly retarded.

  • Thank you!

  • @xAZAELx13 hey im 19 and im going to school for welding i just had a few questions if thats ok... where is this at? And how many passes did it take to fill it. Thanx.

  • @markers547754 This was in the Northwest Territories in Canada. It took one fill pass to make it suitable for capping. Good luck in school markers547754!

  • you forgot firing line.....as for me being as wrong as a person can be...your wrong ... but who knows there are different terms in every industry ive worked pipeline in five states not that you havent, but every job ive worked mainline is big pipe

  • @lowbuckfabrication You have no posted videos so I don't believe anything you say. You have zero credibility and zero validity. Anyone can say anything behind a keyboard. Back up what you say with video.

  • @xAZAZELx13 validity shmidity i dgaf im a mechanicn bud i spend my day working not playing grabass with a welder helper ...why dont u go bust an x ray

  • @lowbuckfabrication Why don't you post a video and stop talking out your ass (if you can...) "Lowbuck?"

Whats a "mechanicn???" Do you mean "Mechanic?"

  • sorry boys but 10 inch aint considered mainline

  • @lowbuckfabrication Really "LowBuck???" What is mainline in your opinion?

    BTW that's 8 inch not 10 inch.

  • @xAZAZELx13 well..."xAZAZELx13"it is my understanding that mainline projects are genarally union and are 36+''and several hundred miles in length...

  • @lowbuckfabrication Well "LowBuck" your about as wrong as a person could be. "Mainline' describes what part of the welding crew you're on and has NOTHING to do with the size of pipe. There's Mainline, Poor Boy, Tie Ins, Test, and Utility. The size of the pipe has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

    Where are your videos?

  • we all know that moisture causes porosity. a certain amount of porosity is allowable, but not desirable, this we know too. using umbrellas keeps the unwanted, yet still acceptable porosity from the welds, maintaining a higher overall weld quality. using umbrellas even under minimal snow conditions is a great idea ... thanks! I'm an inspector.

  • @Robb9096 I'm hoping to be an inspector one day myself! Thanks for watching!

  • understanding how to weld correctly and rod selection and preperation is easy to understand, its just getting a job doing it...maybe im thinking about it to hard...i may just move up to where ever you are lol after completing this API 1004 downhil welding course thats costing me a arm and a leg, but i hope its worth it...where did you train at for welding?

  • I look forward to seeing the videos...ill take some knowledge I learn from them to class when I start. Do u just weld off your own rig or do u work for someone,i wanna know how to get on pipeline

  • @CATmech89 I work for someone. I don't own my own welding rig. A rig is VERY expensive to put together and I don't have the capital to do that.

  • @xAZAZELx13 gotcha, i got welding machines and all the equipment to go with to make a welding rig, but my dumb ass traded my 2003 2500HD chevy for a 2010 mazda 3 just to get better fuel mileage...im very soon getting another truck....you think once having tickets in hand its hard getting a job welding on pipelines? iv heard people say no but then some people wanna discourage others and say yea you wont ever make it to the pipeline..i dont think like that

  • @CATmech89 I think if you set your mind to it and apply yourself anything is possible. Don't listen to people who tell you "you'll never make it!"

  • @xAZAZELx13 thanks man i appreciate that.Where did you train for welding a?t

  • @xAZAZELx13 hey i got a question, i just recently got a job as a welders helper for a very large utility oil and gas company and i start monday. what are some things a welders helper does? it it something im going to be stressing about everyday i go to work about loosing my job cause im not fast enough or i dont know everything there is to know? just curious

  • @CATmech89 It really depends on the Welder your working with. Some are really kool guys and others are total assholes. You'll be passing them electrodes, cutting, grinding, buffing, and so on. You might even get to do a bit of welding. If you get paired up with a good welder you'll have a good time but if you get paired up with a dick (the kind who says your work is never good enough or to his liking) your days will be long and miserable. You'll be fine! Don't stress about it!

  • @CATmech89 Yeah you don't relly need a right to make lots of money. You can still get a by hand position that would pay between $35-$60/hr. or more.

  • @MagnesiumAlloy Do you have a link to current job posting offering $60 dollars by hand? I'd like to investigate that further!

  • @xAZAZELx13 I don't think I can post this link on youtube but this is pretty close, also consider that a lot of companies don't advertise.

  • @MagnesiumAlloy PM me the link.

  • when the welder is striking the arc and begins dragging the rod i noticed he waves the rod rapidly for a couple seconds then slows down to a nice steady drag...why does he start out fast and then slow down?

  • @CATmech89 The waving is to make sure that the top isn't undercut. He's moving faster because he starts the rod hotter (plus 10 plus amps depending on experience.) to make sure there's no slag or porosity in the start then turns the amperage down. Some of the more experienced guys just weld the whole side at a constant heat.

I'm looking into getting a new home welding set up right now. I'm a little cramped for space at the moment however. I'll make a video on it of and when I do it.

  • @xAZAZELx13 gotcha..dam im learning from this convo already lol....when i weld pipe in class or just here at our shop for practice i hold my edges for atleast 2 seconds making sure not to pause in the middle to get to much convexity...i like nice flat good looking welds...the videos you got up are very good to watch but there almost perfect for showing you how its done...kinda like an instructional.

  • what kind of training did you have prior to welding pipeline? did you go to school or just started practicing one day until you got to where u are now?

  • @CATmech89 You need to go to school for three years, have a pressure welding ticket, and a down hand welding Ticket. They don't teach down hand welding in school though so it's something you have to figure out on your own. Please note that this is not me welding in the video but rather a friend of mine.

  • @xAZAZELx13 theres a school in my area that will certify welders in 10 weeks for a pretty pricey cost but worth it in my eyes..they teach API 1104

  • @CATmech89 There might be a class you can take at a Technical Collage somewhere but I'm unaware of it. I think downhill should be taught in school.

  • @xAZAZELx13 oh yea deffinently, they teach API 1004 downhill welding and ASME uphill welding...its an everyday course for 10 weeks....i took 4 yars of welding in highschool and im just practicing pipe now.makes it easier to learn also having welding machines at home

  • @xAZAZELx13 welding you say a pressure welding ticket and down hand ticket..what do you mean by ticket? a certification?

  • @CATmech89 Yes it's a certification that lasts for three years. After that time you have to re-certify.

  • nice stack on the bottom.

  • @scmDotcom Thanks! We had to grind that down a little bit!

  • OFFSHORE WELDERS MAKE LARGE SALARIES. If you would like to weld offshore, and earn much larger salaries than you would welding inshore, then please send me your email address. I started welding offshore over 30 years ago, I have the information you need if you wish to pursue a high paying welding job offshore, just simply send me your email address and get this information. Thanks.

  • Yeah awsome I'm in the process of putting a rig together right now but I have to stay at my current work for another month or so have to finish up a vessel since me and one other guy only passed the job test to do all the joints on it.

  • @jojoe53 Sounds kool! Get some videos up if you can!

  • O yeah way machine u running? Im a pipe welder and fitter in prince George just getting some experience so I can head up there do some real work!

  • @jojoe53 We were using a Pipeliner 200 D on this job. There's lots of work in the Dawson area!

  • Love that video is that up in northern bc? Did you guys need a Alberta b or bc pwp11 for that job?

  • @jojoe53 It's in northern BC and we needed an Alberta B and some BC ticket that you mailed out for. I don't remember what it was called. It might have been that pwp11 you mentioned.

  • man i dont miss that ! nice job thoe

  • @theARMORYchannel You don't miss making a hundred bucks an hour? Interesting...

  • @theARMORYchannel lol i only made 16 hr. thats why i told them to blow me and left! lol

  • @theARMORYchannel WHAT????!!!! That's gay as hell! I can see why you left. That hundred dollar an hour rate is for contractors with their own welding trucks though. Still 16 dollars an hour by hand is a SHIT rate!

  • @xAZAZELx13 i know and i was a NEW YORK certified bridge welder! they put me though hell to past that gay test! they x rayed it and everythig. fucken 16 hr.

  • @theARMORYchannel That suck big time! 16 an hour is a low end laborer rate! What kind of test did you have to do???

  • @xAZAZELx13 its called a vertical full pen weld. its a bitch. then they put this gel on it and check for tiny gaps. its like a ultra sound.

  • FIRE IN THE HOLE!

  • overhead is a bitch! great stiff! i did this years ago mi stick tig etc! you are earning every penny!!

  • @Lookinformemarbles I hate overhead with a passion!

  • @xAZAZELx13 how many years you been at it? looks like awhile!

  • @Lookinformemarbles Well that's not me in the video. I've been Welding for about 6 years now.

  • still in the snow eh? oh joy!

  • @leoffensive This was filmed a little over a month ago but yeah there's still snow here my friend! In fact it's snowing right now... LOL

  • @xAZAZELx13 oh joy! hahah

  • money in the bank.

  • @MatrixOne976 Yes sir!

  • good soundin root

  • @locknloadvideo We weren't beading! LOL!

  • @xAZAZELx13 at the very beginning?

  • @xAZAZELx13 its 6010 isnt it?

  • @locknloadvideo That's 7010 for the Fill and Cap. 6010 for the bead.

  • @xAZAZELx13 So do you do this one week on and one week off or what?

  • @SupremeAmerican It's good to get on a rotation like that but this job was six days on and one off. Sunday was my day off. I like fourteen on seven off myself!

  • is that welder making decent money? How long is his shift?

  • @fart1fart1 One Hundred Ten an hour for twelve hour days.
