  • Those head bolts look like they're covered in copper anti-seize, which would be a bit more positive

  • I really love the BMW 6 cyl. I miss my 325i with its inline 6. Very smooth engine...

  • How do you measure if the head or block is warped on this engine?

  • @EthanCommins888 precision straight edge is best, or take it to a machine shop (alloy heads must be re machined before refitting anyway.

the block should not be warped, just make sure the deck surface is clean and free from corrosion and scratches around the key sealing points like cylinders, and water galleries.

  • The Russian anthem at 1:05 ?? O_o

  • get rd of the stupd usic

  • Great video man, it was fairly helpful in showing how involved head replacement is on this engine, but when Nightwish came on in the background at 3:22, I almost crapped myself with enjoyment, engine teardowns and symphonic metal with an aussie narrating, doesn't get much better than that, then some loony shut it off at 3:41. :( oh well, perfection is best in small doses.

  • @peterludeke lol yeh it was one of those party nights, I had a few friends over at the time. but yeh , I love Nightwish and many other metal bands!.

  • What a beautiful engine. I bet that straight 6 runs very smooth...

  • @sklzlm they are a very nice engine. just gotta keep them well serviced and adjusted (valve adjustment is critical to smooth running )

I still have the short block in storage, dunno if I will put a new head on it tho

  • Hello. How much does this motor weigh?

    Anyone?

  • put the correct anti-freeze in that will never happens

  • i would get some jb weld to fix the hole in the head

  • @8tyman8 as emergency measure I could have screwed a new spark plug in and filled the hole with epoxy/JB, but that plug would never come out again, and I still wouldn't trust it for any amount of time.

    no bush-mechanics on my cars.

  • @Aussie50 clean the hole out and tap it and thread like a pipe nipple on it or sum ting like that

  • @8tyman8 its in such a awkward place you'd never get a drill and tap into there.. if it was in the side of the head I would have done that.

the head was trash, corrosion in the galleries.

  • @Aussie50 so you could not clean out the hole and get a piece of pipe that fits in that hole but that the spark plug fits thru and you could put jb weld in the pipe and insert it in the spark plug hole thing it would be worth a try

  • i dont have the impact gun to take off the crank nut. can i still take off the head without breaking timing

  • @ttrousdell If you maintain upward tension on the chain so it can't slip on the sprocket it will hold its position on the crank.

best thing to do is get a long bit of wire and a stiff spring, get the cam sprocket loose and hold the chain under tension so it dosn't drop as you remove the sprocket completely.

(requiring somthing to tie off overhead like a beam) still holding the chain under tension, wire it up to a overhead sturcture using the spring to keep it tight while you undo the head

  • @ttrousdell As you and a helper lift the head upwards, get another helper to grab the chain, hold it up, and remover the wire so you can get the head clear of the car..

all you have to do it maintain tension on it and make sure the cam position is the same when it goes back on.

  • ive a bmw 520i e34 m20b20 engine, it has done 355.000km, and it ' ran worm last summer' and we changed the radiator and it never been running worm anymore, and its not eating much oil either, hopeully it stays for a while ;p

  • @omfgimback most engines can run hot without harming them (oil change is needed after tho) its when the cooling system releases pressure while hot and causes the coolant in the head to boil that it will crack/warp things.

I'd say yours would be fine. I took this engine apart because of corrosion from incorrect coolant.

  • Which one is it? I guess 3.0 or 3.5

  • @cfreak99 its the 3.5 out of a E32 735i

  • I think it was time to strip this engine down about 100,000 miles ago. Good grief!

  • Thanks for the video. I'm doing this in a week or two. Nice to see it completely out of the car.

  • I dk how tight that tensioner is suppose to be but that looked terribly lose. You might want to consider replacing that while you have the engine pulled.

  • I think its reliant on oil pressure to apply tension to the chain, but I'll be replacing all the cam chain stuff when I rebuild it.

  • good job. the block looks fine.:)

  • have you ever seen a Straight 8 enging?or a v4 engin?

  • I know there are striaght 8 engines, though I don't recall seeing one.

Wisconsin make a nice little V4 though! I want one for my collection!

  • i worked on a lot of straight 8 engines. they are smooth and powerful but they like to bend or snap cranks :(

  • buick had straight 8 engines iv seen 1 they sound amasing very smooth

  • Volkswagen made a flat 4, and subaru makes a flat 4 now

  • you could use this engine for parts depending on how bad the corrosion hole is

  • might been a bad casting

  • That should make a nice project over time then :)

I have always hated that emissions control on cars! The recirculation of exhaust gases=loss of power :P

  • this one doesn't recirculate exhaust gas thankfully, its just gasses and oil mist from the crank case combined with fine dust from the intake air. but it still works to gum everything up.

but EGR is a horrible thing to have on an engine.

  • Ahuh, Its a pitty then done that to engines. Is there any way to stop it?

Yeah unfortunately v6 commodores have EGR :( i dont like the idea of it, i know you can disconnect the EGR valve and bolt down a piece of steel, But it would then be illegal.

  • just un boit the egr valve put a piese of sheet metal under it and then bolt it back on lol thankfuly in new zealand were alowded to take that crap off

  • haha sweet, that would work out well. :)

    lol your lucky then :P

  • so wats rong with the engine that makes u have to tear it down?

  • this is the one from my car, there is a corrosion hole in the head near the spark plug on cyl no4

  • first view and first comment!!!

    woohoo!!!
