Let's face it here - dating rituals are different in different cultures, and it is difficult to assimilate to a different culture at times, especially if you didn't grow up in the US. Even if you did, the environment you grew up in can greatly affect how you treat different situations. So......complex.

If you have the same hobby or like the same books/television shows/ etc. I find it's easier to talk to them because you're excited about your hobby. I'm a white female and sort of 'shy' myself. Well I used to be shy, now I just don't talk to people because I don't feel a need to. I'm usually attracted to quiet males. Outgoingness, confidence, socialness, are not attractive qualities.
On another note, I'm only attracted to white males. Any other race might as well be a different species to me when it comes to attractiveness. Only about 10% of my college is white, and I've only ever been attracted to white people. I've found this odd.

Allyson makes a very good point in this video. I' m Asian and I' ve seen that having confidence when talking to women does help. If anything, it will only improve a guy's chances of making a good impression. Another thing that I' ve noticed is that a sense of humor is a major plus when interacting with women. When I was in high school, I was shy and found out later that the girls in the "popular" group that asked me to dance, go to their party, go to the prom with them actually were interested. I'm a white female and sort of 'shy' myself. Well I used to be shy, now I just don't talk to people because I don't feel a need to. I'm usually attracted to quiet males. Outgoingness, confidence, socialness, are not attractive qualities.
On another note, I'm only attracted to white males. Any other race might as well be a different species to me when it comes to attractiveness. Only about 10% of my college is white, and I've only ever been attracted to white people. I've found this odd.

Baby steps. I used to be the same way, but I worked at little bits and pieces. Consider purposely getting into stressful situations repeatedly. Did wonders for me. Like, at first, it was as little as just to go buy something from a store.
In war, attrition is the ultimate weapon against shyness, though it's referred to as cognitive desensitization or something like that in this respect.
