  • I think the first 1/4 acre or so should be property tax free. Then after that about $1000 per acre per year.

  • Roads should be and are paid for by a gasoline tax. Why should an apartment building pay less for roads than homes, when there are 50 cars for the apartment building and 1 car for the house that use the same amount of land. This is George's big blunder.

  • Better yet, roads should be paid when tags are renewed on vehicles. This way the mileage since last renewal and weight of vehicle factor into the usage fee. Just by using a standard calculation on all vehicles that is multiplied by the mileage usage and weight of vehicle when the vehicle tags are renewed, a fair fee can be set.

"Why should an apartment building pay less for roads than homes,"

Under LVT it would not. Gasoline tax will not pay the full cost of roads and all associated. e.g., the medical bills of road accidents is not paid for by this tax. The environmental fallout is not paid for by the tax either. A Congestion charge is applicable as it charges for a scares resource - roads in city centres. And the polluting of a scare resource - air.

  • Henry George was going along fine then he made the blunder, it is not population that makes land valuable it is individuals. End all the rpivate ownership of land, confiscate the farms and give everyone 1 acre of tax free land on their 12th birthday. There can be no Land of the Free without FREE LAND!!!!

  • @pirucreek

What makes land valuable is the economic activity of the community, NOT one individual. The Landowners did NOTHING. to create increased values in LAND. NOTHING!

Land values are Common Wealth - crated by the community - all of LAND. Land Valuation Tax reclaims that wealth for community services. Conversely the Community should not take private wealth in the form of income tax, VAT, etc, to pay for public services. Private wealth stays in private hands.

    We socialize private wealth

  • @NearAbbeyRoad Though most of his book, George thought paying rent on land was the big sin. Land is just that land, the right of every human being on earth to have access to free land. So you move to a community. By having smaller lots all you have is a better place to conduct division of labor. The land is still free. To pay for the roads, should not come from the land, but an income or road tax.

  • @pirucreek

Roads are infrastructure which create economic growth by the community. This growth chrysalises as land values. The two are interlinked. Charge Land Valuation Tax to pay for the infrastructure.

  • @NearAbbeyRoad What makes land valuable is a shortage.

  • @pirucreek

A land shortage can increase land values. An artificial land shortage is in the UK - 7.5% of the land settled.

Where jobs, high quality homes, high quality leisure, quality transport, open spaces, etc, etc, are wanted, land prices increase. The increased land value is created via Community activity - private and public

  • henry george was fighting the new world order. yet another reason to ressurect henry george.
