The best way to paint frames is to paint as if though you are trying to paint something behind the frame. Let the frame get in the way of your mist, in even strokes.
Can you tell me anything more about this frame. I know you advise against fillet brazing as a beginner in your book but to me the availability of lugs is almost as limiting as the options in purchasing a stock frame. Any tips on fillet brazing? Why did you decide on the reinforcement at the front of the front triangle?
@omiakonderick This frame is my first and only brass fillet brazed frame. I am not that great at fillet brazing. Learning lugs is much easier, but you are right, with lugs your geometry choices are limited. Because I am not that great at fillet brazing, I can't give you advice that is very good. You will need to get an oxy-fuel torch. MAPP will not get hot enough to braze brass. I have tried fillet brazing with silver but it only works ok-- I do not recommend it.
@mchimonas Yeah, one of the main reasons I have decided to build a frame is that I have free access to an oxy-acetylene torch. What bottom bracket shell is that? Did you have to bend the sockets as described in your book? I've ordered a Nova 29er tubeset that has pre-bent chainstays. I'm thinking that everything will be fillet brazed except the BB shell same as you've done here. Thanks for the reply by the way.

@omiakonderick If you use a road bike BB shell, you will have to bend the sockets bit time. Also, even if your frame is long, your fork will have to be short or your head angle will be very slack. Using a mountain bike (26") bottom bracket will require less bending of the sockets and slack head angle will be less of an issue--but the bottom bracket will be very high on a 19er--about 1.5" higher than a 26er. Find water soluable brass brazing flux.
you have power in you shed i have a small 2 stroke engine coonected to a alternator then wire to a car battery then a 12 volt light my light switch is a starter rope lol
@SLEEPY818626 Options include wet sanding with fine grit sandpaper and a clear coat. See some of the other viewer's comments. The paint can be bumpy and rough if you move the can too quickly. Aim for slow steady strokes.
2. get rusto extra glossy enamel use 2 or 3 coats until entire frame is covered
3. use rusto laquer or rusto glossy clear coat at most 4 or 5 coats
thats how kids do it here and the bikes look like they are professionally done. dont use dupli-color, it drips a bunch and is hard to use. use montana or rusto.
@noobiaznkid usually you would want to layer your paint the otherway around. with the light color first and then the dark color (unless the light areas are going to be very small).
@noobiaznkid , if by alloy you mean aluminum, there is some sort of special treatment prior to painting that is required. I am not sure if engine enamel will work. I would do a google search for painting aluminum
u should think about using a product called spray max for clear coat super strong and flexable same kinda clear they use for automotive paint but comes in a can.
@mchimonas no problem i forgot to mention that i clear coated my whole car with spray max product and its still strong and shine like new after 3 years. i get lots of complement for it also.
I did. I took down the videos where I make the frame in this video, but I have other frame videos. Check out "more from mchimonas" at the center-top right.
no doubt the clear coat will make it shiner. I guess my rational for not doing a clear coat was that when it gets scratched (and it will) it will be easier to match the texture without the powder coat. Any advise you have on the matter for touch up is welcome.
I have an aluminum frame, it seems to have some kind of clear coat on it that flaking off. I don't have a sandblaster, can I use any paint remover to strip the coating? Lastly, what brand of primer and paint would you recommend?
Not sure if you can paint chrome. You don't necessarily need a sandblaster. There may be businesses near your town that will do it for you for about $20. Keep in mind that most places will not do a powder coat though. Painting aluminum requires special treatments and primers. I am afraid I cannot help you much more because I have never painted aluminum.
Clear coat would definitely make the frame glossier. Dave didn't want his frame too shiny. Also, without the clear coat touch ups later on will be much easier--just spray and sand--less hassle to match the texture.
Ho many cans did you use?

whats the water solution for the wet/dry sanding? whats the amount of water and amount of windex?

it's just a small amount of dish soap in water. I didn't make any measurements. Just enough soap to make a few bubbles when the water goes in.
