  • Ho many cans did you use?

  • Omg don't ever do that again!!!

  • Were is the Clear Coat???

  • Great video..thanks ...cat is super cute

  • This is one of the weirdest videos currently on YouTube.

  • The best way to paint frames is to paint as if though you are trying to paint something behind the frame. Let the frame get in the way of your mist, in even strokes.

  • No pedals

  • I like the Chevy orange-red. I have painted a couple of my bikes the same color.

  • shake harder!, shake faster! >:o

  • no clear coat?? paint wont last long..

  • Haha. Entertaining vid, good work!

  • That is a legit looking bike for <50 bucks!

  • @Mrjeepcherokee1 I think he really meant he spent under $50 on painting the frame aka the spray paints, sandpaper & such.

  • Awesome cat!!

    ...Oh yea nice vid too

  • 1:26 ^__^

  • you don't use a clear top coat?

  • You are the worst spray painter i have ever seen. It looked like you were having a muscle spazem

  • @suicidekidz100 Your momma!!!

  • @mchimonas bahahahaha

  • @suicidekidz100 You are the worst speller I have ever seen. It looked like you were trying to write spasm.

  • well done pakayo!!

    : P

  • thanks this was helpful

  • Thank you for posting a great tutorial!!! I found it very helpful and look forward to painting mine once the weather warms up.

  • can u list the item to paint the bycycle???

  • Can you tell me anything more about this frame. I know you advise against fillet brazing as a beginner in your book but to me the availability of lugs is almost as limiting as the options in purchasing a stock frame. Any tips on fillet brazing? Why did you decide on the reinforcement at the front of the front triangle?

  • @omiakonderick This frame is my first and only brass fillet brazed frame. I am not that great at fillet brazing. Learning lugs is much easier, but you are right, with lugs your geometry choices are limited. Because I am not that great at fillet brazing, I can't give you advice that is very good. You will need to get an oxy-fuel torch. MAPP will not get hot enough to braze brass. I have tried fillet brazing with silver but it only works ok-- I do not recommend it.

  • @mchimonas Yeah, one of the main reasons I have decided to build a frame is that I have free access to an oxy-acetylene torch. What bottom bracket shell is that? Did you have to bend the sockets as described in your book? I've ordered a Nova 29er tubeset that has pre-bent chainstays. I'm thinking that everything will be fillet brazed except the BB shell same as you've done here. Thanks for the reply by the way.

  • @omiakonderick If you use a road bike BB shell, you will have to bend the sockets bit time. Also, even if your frame is long, your fork will have to be short or your head angle will be very slack. Using a mountain bike (26") bottom bracket will require less bending of the sockets and slack head angle will be less of an issue--but the bottom bracket will be very high on a 19er--about 1.5" higher than a 26er. Find water soluable brass brazing flux.

  • Could you tell me what spray paint I should use?

  • @muppetchile use glossy rusto with a clear coat applied afterwords. my job only cost 30 bucks and it looks like a pro job.

  • if you used metallic paint and clear coat you would have got a much higher quality shine

  • hey my cat looks just like that ,I named it smokey,

  • you have power in you shed i have a small 2 stroke engine coonected to a alternator then wire to a car battery then a 12 volt light my light switch is a starter rope lol

  • instead of wax...you should have used a polishing compound

  • Im thinking about spraying the frame a dull colour, but the rims of the wheels like bright orange or something, could you tell me what you think?

  • @oSAMKIDo If you are using rim brakes and have machined braking surfaces on the rims, don't pain the rims.

  • sick tingz

  • Awesome job! took some time to paint, but the results were really good. Thanks for posting this video.

  • @TheMarcus110 He is a good cat but I am getting tired of the primer grey color. I should paint him orange.

  • WHEN I PAINTED MY BIKE IT GOT SOME LIL BUBBLES ON IT WHAT CAN I DO SO IT WONT GET IT AND ALSO ITS KIND OF BUMPY AND ROUGH

  • @SLEEPY818626 Options include wet sanding with fine grit sandpaper and a clear coat. See some of the other viewer's comments. The paint can be bumpy and rough if you move the can too quickly. Aim for slow steady strokes.

  • WHAT CAN I PUT TO MAKE MY BIKE SHINE

  • @SLEEPY818626 either wet sand or do a clear coat.

  • @SLEEPY818626 you put a gloss clear coat

  • @SLEEPY818626

    1. get primer

    2. get rusto extra glossy enamel use 2 or 3 coats until entire frame is covered

    3. use rusto laquer or rusto glossy clear coat at most 4 or 5 coats

thats how kids do it here and the bikes look like they are professionally done. dont use dupli-color, it drips a bunch and is hard to use. use montana or rusto.

  • oh ok, nah I was thinking of making it white with black writing and decals :)

  • mchimonas. thanks yes aluminum :)

and also will it work if I did one layer of black, tape off areas want to be kept black then go over it with like 7 layers of white?

  • @noobiaznkid usually you would want to layer your paint the otherway around. with the light color first and then the dark color (unless the light areas are going to be very small).

  • and hey is dupli color engine enamel primer and base coat good for alloy frames? then I'll clear coat it with spray max for protection :)

i just want to know because I would hate to screw up my frame

    thanks

  • @noobiaznkid , if by alloy you mean aluminum, there is some sort of special treatment prior to painting that is required. I am not sure if engine enamel will work. I would do a google search for painting aluminum

  • hey if a primers already white, do i still need a base coat or just clear coat it?

  • @noobiaznkid usually primers are grey and an ugly grey at that.

  • very good. I learned a lot from your video. keep up the good work.

  • u should think about using a product called spray max for clear coat super strong and flexable same kinda clear they use for automotive paint but comes in a can.

  • hey, thanks for the tip.

  • @mchimonas no problem i forgot to mention that i clear coated my whole car with spray max product and its still strong and shine like new after 3 years. i get lots of complement for it also.

  • did you make that frame yourself?

  • I did. I took down the videos where I make the frame in this video, but I have other frame videos. Check out "more from mchimonas" at the center-top right.

  • dude if you want it shinny just clear coat it trust me i know i have painted plinty of bikes and i know

  • no doubt the clear coat will make it shiner. I guess my rational for not doing a clear coat was that when it gets scratched (and it will) it will be easier to match the texture without the powder coat. Any advise you have on the matter for touch up is welcome.

  • the bike looks plain. maybe decals?

  • @TheRUSSIA69

    true

  • @TheRUSSIA69 it looks clean that way

  • funny vid but insightful, dont think i will be doing this to my raleigh chopper though

  • your shit at painting

  • you're = you are

    For example: you're an idiot

Thank you for your insightful feedback

  • haha, awesome.

  • thanks this helped a lot !

  • Few questions. You can't paint chrome, right?

I have an aluminum frame, it seems to have some kind of clear coat on it that flaking off. I don't have a sandblaster, can I use any paint remover to strip the coating? Lastly, what brand of primer and paint would you recommend?

  • Not sure if you can paint chrome. You don't necessarily need a sandblaster. There may be businesses near your town that will do it for you for about $20. Keep in mind that most places will not do a powder coat though. Painting aluminum requires special treatments and primers. I am afraid I cannot help you much more because I have never painted aluminum.

  • is primer just white paint

  • no the formulation is different. It is usually flat grey and fills cracks better. It also sticks to raw surfaces better.

  • osum aug.12 is my b-day!!!!

  • awesome job, looks great!

  • breath it in soldier, lol, hey looks good, like the color.great job!

  • whats the water solution for the wet/dry sanding? whats the amount of water and amount of windex?

  • it's just a small amount of dish soap in water. I didn't make any measurements. Just enough soap to make a few bubbles when the water goes in.

  • good try and the wax makes it look perfect! see my vid as response!

  • your response got lost for some reason. Resubmit so I can approve it.

  • I want to give my handle bars a copper metallic color any suggestions?

  • I cannot think of any copper colored paint off the top of my head. Check out the dupli color web site. They have lots of colors.

  • that will be SICK dude do it

  • lol "matching grey cat sold seperatly"

  • he's not really for sale.

  • If you used a clear coat over it do you think it would look a little better?

  • Clear coat would definitely make the frame glossier. Dave didn't want his frame too shiny. Also, without the clear coat touch ups later on will be much easier--just spray and sand--less hassle to match the texture.

  • Yeah I suppose. I just want to sand my Trek down (Its orange) make it black or something and I want it to look like it came that way

  • you can sand it or get it sand blasted. Dupli Color makes a glossy black engine enamel that is pretty durable.

  • nice vid thanks , good editing too

  • Hey thanks alot.
