i think iphone now automatically uses IMAP instead of POP when you select the GMAIL option when adding an account. you dont need to select OTHER. i did this and it keeps all my mail in sync when reading, deleting, etc.

set hotmail to forward to yer gmail account set yer gmail account to receive messages from hotmail. make your to from settings hotmail and you wont have to change anything\. It works great I did it a few weeks ago, goodbye hotmail. I still use it as my email address though

You need to make sure your IMAP checking settings are on the lowest setting (15mins), that way your iPhone will check your gmail correctly, and update the number on the app button.

Keep in mind, it only checks every 15mins (or whatever you currently have it set at), so won't be updated the moment you receive a mail.

I had already set my gmail account on my iphone by clicking the Gmail icon under email accounts.. IMAP seems to work just fine even though I didn't select "Other" as the video instructed. They must have updated it.

WOW. Some people are morons. IMAP has been around. It's used on PC and Mac mail clients, it's used on any number of wireless devices. It is a protocol, not a branding. And yes, it happens to work like butter on the iPhone. Want mass email deletion to reduce the # of new mails showing up on your iPhone? Just delete/mark as read in your GMail account on a desktop!

No, there is no "faux" hand used. Watch the middle fingertip twitch at 0:37. You wouldn't have to hold your hand for "an hour" while they did takes. Assuming they even did a lot of takes, the clips are very short so you wouldn't have some hand model standing around motionless all day.

imap syncs messages throughout the gmail server...meaning that if you check a message or send one from home, the next time your iphone/ipod touch updates, it will show that you checked or sent a message...the regular gmail setup doesnt do that...
