  • this video is 4:20 long.... woohoo

  • Brings back memories of my jazz combo days in Tuscaloosa, AL. I wonder how many combo gigs I played over the course of those 5 1/2 years. I knew almost nothing about jazz after graduating high school. I could swing (drums) which is a must. I learned the rest by playing those gigs. The horn players played from the Big Book & if I didn't know the tune they would just tell me what style & what tempo. After a few gigs they didn't have to tell me anything except the song title. Real music education!

  • Gorgeous!!!!

  • My favorite tempo for this tune, nice and laid back, but "Solar" is my favorite Davis composition, either playing or listening.

  • 5 people are idiots

  • Lambert, Hendricks & Ross covered this. The album is "The Swingers".

  • completely unaware of this version; is this available on cd? Under what title?

love the relaxed tempo, horace silver and art blakey.

This is my fav miles tune, listen to the coltrane/garland version with their wonderful solos all the time.

thx so much for putting this out there!

  • @HARDROCKR4U Ooook, I'd stick to your hard rock if you're that close-minded.

  • @HARDROCKR4U seriously?! hahaha

  • @HARDROCKR4U

Seriously? Are you trolling? I can't imagine anyone being that ignorant. As a student studying a Bachelor of Music I'd like to say on behalf of EVERYONE that you should stay off You Tube. And please don't come back until you understand what you are talking about.

  • @HARDROCKR4U best be trollin sista.

  • so good

  • I just started listening to Jazz. God its so good. It's very different from most other music genres. It is focused so much on sound and not that much on show offs and appearance like many other genres like disco and pop. It's pure sound, talent and just relaxing in so many ways.

  • @jallelind I agree and disagree. I agree with you when you say it's pure sound, talent and just relaxing in so many ways but when you say it does not focus on show offs.....I have come across many Jazz musicians that show off and even pursue a career in Jazz the the sole sake of showing off. Hopefully you have encountered this but if your as enriched into the music scene as some of these guys out there, I'm sure you will. Keep listening.

  • @KDFrieds I said it wasnt ALL about showoffs compared to rock which focuses much on showoffs and solos.

  • @KDFrieds No one worth listening to shows off. Jazz is a very independent art form, its all about enriching your own life and its really a form of meditation for the player, the audience is along for the ride and the moment you start thinking about impressing anyone in the audience is when you start sounding like total shit.

  • @WhitePhatGuy thnx for trying but i think it is D major

  • @ncw234 it's definitely Eflat major, then d flat major then a few 2 5s decsending half steps

  • @cpolofka it is i have a legit transcription.

  • @cpolofka your right, i confirm that its in E-flat as well

  • @ncw234 it is. the real book is in Eb so is my official transcription i bought. is the video speed wrong?

  • I can't explain it but this number by Miles makes me feel like I was living large at the time when I was just in grade school when it dropped. But it reminds of the good life, the kind of life for the ones who appreciate the really good things and reasons for life. I sort of feel melancholy and great at the same time. I love for things to make me feel in really different ways. I have another version of this, it's a little faster. I like this better. Thanks for sharing.

  • what key is this in

  • @ncw234 E-flat-ish

  • I cant figure out why i hate jazz so much so i came here to see if i was just being stubborn, and i cant stand this..all it is essentially is an upwards rising scale, played in triplets. can some explain to me why this was so "Amazing"?

  • @reptaryay you haven't considered how the soloing corresponds so unconventionally yet so well with the underlying harmony. this is genius

  • @250Yogi explain in more detail please?

  • @reptaryay horace and miles keep it simple but not sounding shit and corny.

  • @reptaryay I wouldn't really call this version of the tune amazing. The chord changes in this tune are ingenious but this is because of their simplicity. It's fairly easy to play over. What makes jazz music amazing is spontaneous composition and communication between players. Sometimes youll hear a guy play an idea and someone else will pick up on it and the effect is amazing. Its so fresh sounding. You don't really get that in classical music where everything is predetermined.

  • @cpolofka classical no but improv is still a major part in blues and funk, it all sounds like bad elevator music..so confused...i feel like the the only one who hates it.

  • @reptaryay all of it certainly doesn't sound like this, all music genre's are fairly loose. Not even all of what miles played sounds like this, check out some of the 1960s recordings, those are amazing.

I can see where your opinion is coming from, I even feel that way sometimes, a lot of the jazz people i go to school with is total shite. A friend of mine always puts on the same yellowjackets song when we get stoned and it makes me wanna stab him.

  • @cpolofka lol ok will do man ty

  • @reptaryay Check some of these out if you want to hear something that sounds nothing at all like elevator music

    PED94xI8tKg

    Miles 2nd Quintet

Listen to the communication between the players in ^this^ group, it's deep. There's communication between players in funk and blues, but nothing like this.

  • @reptaryay

The best advice i've ever heard about jazz is that you can't ask it to be something it's not. I come from a very pop/rock up bringing, and i used to listen to things wanting to hear a verse, chorus, bridge type of structure, or tension and resolution. As soon as I stopped asking it to be that way, I started hearing things i really liked, that, and it's ok to like some things and not others.

  • i just got the music to this song two hours ago and i have to play it for jazz band tryouts in 10 mins freaking out but its really fun to play

  • Miles Davis is GOD!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Marvellous!

  • Sounds odd. This is 3/4 steps down from the master.

  • Pure art.The feeling is amazing.It's classic!

  • Wow!

  • just eternal

  • Is it coincidence that the original track without this intro and stuff was spot on four minutes long? I mean to the split second.

  • @60march I don't think so xD That would be too much of a coincidence I think...

  • What album is this version in? I have the ones in the Seven Steps collection, and the one with the sextet, but they're all weird. I love the tempo they play this one in.

  • this is the audition music for jazz band at my school, this really helped me understand the melody and song.thanks a lot

  • I just love how layed back he is

  • sweet music

  • Eternal, more than wonderful art from MILES DAVIS. Congratulations to konidolfine who posted this video in the giant YouTube.

    Marcelo Batista (MarceloBatista1 YouTube channel)

  • i played this song to get in my high school jazz band for my second year and its a great tune nothing better than jazz in your life playing bass trombone well third trombone for now but oh well good to be in a jazz band

  • Love the pic of miles playing while holding a cig lol. Nice

  • is undoubtedly the best

  • oh wow how come i havent heard this before? i thought the quintet version was the only one that existed

  • Ooh so good.

I've read that Anita O'Day used to cover this -- anyone know if it's on You Tube? Tried searching to no avail. I'd like to hear it. :(

  • @detectmendacity

I prepared for a special request from you.

    Now uploaded my chanel.

    Anita O'Day - FOUR

From my LP record collection,"Anita O'Day SINGS THE WINNERS"

    Anita O'Day (vo)

with Orchestra under direction and arrangement by Marty Paich.

    Recorded in September,1958

    Hope you like it!

  • @konidolfine I loved it -- thank you so much! :)

  • @detectmendacity there's this double bassist called Richard Sadler who plays in a trio I saw somewhere sometime blah blah blah doesn't matter- but the point is there's a great bass and vocals version. Or at least I really like it and I hope you do too.

myspace com/rmsadler only place I've ever seen it. Back in '07 when people still used the thing and it's still there :)

  • miles trumpet is too cool i love the break

  • jesus....this is SO laid back....and in D!?!?!? Miles was just DRIPPING with soul on that solo...

  • ¡Hace tiempo que esperaba este video en YouTube!

Gracias por compartir esta excelente pieza.

  • What's the LP of this track ???

  • @MrBluetrane "Blue Haze", one of my personal favs; all the songs have this similar vibe; various jazz greats are on it too.

  • The epitome of Miles. Just listen to that. I have the other version, a little faster but this is the one I really wanted to hear. Thanks for sharing with the lovers like me. He used to perform at the Regal in Chicago all the time - my big sister and her husband would go and see him and being a jazz lover as a little girl, I could dig this. thanks again.

  • WOW! i've been looking for this version for a long time. Thanks for uploading!

Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross wrote lyrics to this solos. (cust in case somone didn't know)

  • Just to be sure, isn't this version in D major, while Four is usually in Eb Major? Just for transcription purposes :P

  • yeah, man...usually, it's in Eb. you're right on

  • @Nimgawl

it appears to be in D, but the version right here sounds like a slowed down version of the LP track, the trumpet tone is really weird, its low even for the notes that he's playing, plus the drums kind of decay weird which imply the same thing

  • I beg of you someone who please find the music paper of the trumpet solo this trumpet solo exactly how is. Please or modified. please!!!!!!!!

  • why don't you work it out? or at least parts you like

  • @jfi2595 Calm down. Transcribe it.

  • I'm trying to learn this on trombone

  • This is great thanks. I'm learning to sing this with the words and it's so much better to hear Miles play it.

  • this video may go up 200 views this weekend cuz im gonna learn the solo

  • 200 views !!!!!!!!

I hope to get a good result for you.

  • @AgentZeroForTheWin I have a transcript of this solo if you'd like a copy?

  • @UpperRegister i would like a copy of that solo please

  • @UpperRegister Could I get one please?

  • Thank you for sharing.
