This song brings back so many fond memories to mind, of all the time I spent at the back beaches of Victoria, with great friends, cruising in the bug.
I love Australia... the country, and the simplicity and kindness of its people. I like the fact that it's a country of extremes, combining the highest level of modernity with a wild nature, and a fascinating aboriginal culture. Those ingredients combined together make this place specially attracting to me.
Christ, am so homesick right now... sitting in front of my PC at work in London , just listened to James Reyne's "Reckless" and now this...have Google Maps loaded up and found Speedo's Cafe next door to North Bondi RSL...may play "Flame Trees" next. Must . Fight . Them . Tears...
I was lucky enough to be in The Great Southern Land for five weeks in 1992 for the GB Rugby League tour. Loved the place and the people (except on the sports field!) One day I will be back.
As an Aussie I can say Australia is one of many amazing places in the world. Ultimately you can't say it's the best unless you've been out and experienced the rest.
well as far as aussies i think they have a great government. with that said, its better than it was just 30 years ago. now as far as those making the current comments, so the hell what if they dont get out and see their country this is a great song.
Watching this video and listening to this song makes me sad sometimes.... so many aussies talk about how lucky they are yet they've never wandered outside their cities and cars and experienced the real Australia. Because it's the land that's special, and why we are fortunate to live in it.
Born here, luv Australia... i have no interest in travelling outside of Australia as i believe we have it all here...we are very lucky.. The lucky country

Icehouse... Awesome band, great sound. When they made their way across the ocean to KROQ in the 80's, I was hooked. It's too bad that it's damn near impossible to find their albums.
My children were born in England and for some years all they knew of Australia was this song - the day we took them 'home' they woke at about 4am to pack with squeals of 'We're going to Australia' - and I could hear this song coming from my daughter's little tape recorder.

@1a2b3cdf3 Come to Australia, travel the land and then compare the size. Australia is comparable to the US in size but with a tiny population in comparison. Oh, Brissy, I miss you, too. Me also, what am I doing in this fucking rain and cold and dark winter in British Columbia? I wanna go back. Julia could fuck the country to bits and I would still move back in an heartbeat if the circumstances allowed it. Aussies aren't necesarily the easiest folks to get along with, but they take no bullshit. Good people! Go Canetoads!!

Again... A kickass tune, from a great band, from The Great Southern Land.
love this song. love the album. love the band. too bad they never made it big outside australian like midnight oil and the split endz. (and before anyone says anything i know the finn's are new zealanders).
A good friend of mine met his wife online, she is from Australia. They renewed their vows last week and her mother flew to the states to attend and is currently still here. We were talking about this song the other night.
Iva created the real Australian authentic music. Its always a joy to listen to him and his brilliant voice. Iva got the Australian spirit, he is wonderful. Thank you Maiblume.
This song makes feel very proud of being an Australian. That's clip is more like an TV ad rather than a music video. I am pretty sure that might attract people around the world to visit our continent!
btw, that singer Iva , is he the one wearing the black jacket in the original music video of this song ?
This era was the best for Aussie pop music. INXS, Crowded House (ok the Finns are Kiwis), The Oils, Barnsey n Farnsey and Hunters & Collectors. Great memories. I wanna live there again!
Australia is a fabulous country and the people are the greatest! Friendliness, warmth, down-to earthness and humour! I may be only a pom but i love Aussie!
@irR4tiOn4L I got to know Icehouse when I was in Australia in 1988. They'd just released Man of Colours which is also one of the most beautiful songs ever. I've still got the Man of Colours cassette, wish I'd bought the CD though.
Man of Colours is the best selling album ever in Australia by an Australian band. Icehouse themselves have been inducted into the ARIA hall of fame in 2006.
I guarantee you that whether or not they know who wrote it, near every Australian has heard this song
@irR4tiOn4L It's a truly fabulous song and gives me very happy memories of my stay in Australia. Unfortunately Icehouse is not very well known in Europe for some incomprehensible reason, or at least not in Holland where I live. But maybe they're well known in the UK. These europeans don't know wot they're missing!
@sitithesecond Thats a pity for them. Holland is not very much like Australia though. Perhaps you have to see just how big this land is to 'get' the song
@irR4tiOn4L No, Holland is not at all like Australia. It's very small, overpopulated and COLD!!! and there are no wild places. I'd love to visit all of Australia (I was only in Queensland and Sydney), but I reckon that'd take me the rest of my life!!! I did get the feel of the tremendous space though when I was in QNL. I hired a car and drove from Brisbane right up to Boonooroo Park in the north where I had friends. Amazing!
@GuillaumeMaze haha I'm a pom but I'm half French (the other half is Irish). Brisvegas is a great city! The only negative thing about Aussie nowadays is the smoking ban but they didn't have that when I was there.
This band brings back so many great memories for me of my youth and of past friends and loves...great times! :-D Man of Colours is a fantastic album.x
I'm from Mexico, this song I did heard for frist time by rock101 1987, Ice house was and is one group which can make me feel so gooooood, awsome, huge, amazing, beautiful, I don't have words to say more about it, but this is a great group, I fell in love by my self because I like a true music.
thanx for posting this. It's from the golden age or our music. Gotta love Iva's mullet too. We live in the best place in the world and it truely is the Great SouthenLand... :)
Icehouse songs should be a must in times of this hip-hop and rap shit. Listen guys... this is music and not today plastic-pop! Its best next to ZZ top, Simple Minds, U2, Dire Straits, Brian Ferry aso.
it would be great to take vocal and make remix, cause naw all these intruments sounds very primitive and silly.u dont have to listen todays freak and discusting pop.today there are so many wonderfull music and this song and all zztop looks very primitive and stupied u just need to look for it and not listen to what sheaps are listening.there are so many genres of music.pop is the worst.just listen to good idm and then say that todays music is trash.
love this song, best is when it's played at the cricket when Australia go out for play..

Standing at the limits of an endles ocean...
Stranded like a runnaway lost at sea..
City on a rainy day down at the harbour...
Watching as the grey clouds shadow the bay...
Looking everywhere 'cause I had to find you....
This is not the way that I remeber it here....
Anyone can tell you it's a prisoner island...
Hidden in the summer for a million years....
Great Souther Land....

@irR4tiOn4L thanks mate! And i think Great Southern Land should be the Aussie national anthem. Gives me goosebumps (emotion)!!
sitithesecond 1 year ago 3
Its one of the unofficial anthems here. We definitely havent forgotten it
irR4tiOn4L 1 year ago
the words are beaut and the music is stunning. A combination you don't often come across, especially these days.
sitithesecond 1 year ago
@irR4tiOn4L I got to know Icehouse when I was in Australia in 1988. They'd just released Man of Colours which is also one of the most beautiful songs ever. I've still got the Man of Colours cassette, wish I'd bought the CD though.
sitithesecond 1 year ago
Man of Colours is the best selling album ever in Australia by an Australian band. Icehouse themselves have been inducted into the ARIA hall of fame in 2006.
I guarantee you that whether or not they know who wrote it, near every Australian has heard this song
irR4tiOn4L 1 year ago
@irR4tiOn4L It's a truly fabulous song and gives me very happy memories of my stay in Australia. Unfortunately Icehouse is not very well known in Europe for some incomprehensible reason, or at least not in Holland where I live. But maybe they're well known in the UK. These europeans don't know wot they're missing!
sitithesecond 1 year ago
@sitithesecond Thats a pity for them. Holland is not very much like Australia though. Perhaps you have to see just how big this land is to 'get' the song
irR4tiOn4L 1 year ago
@irR4tiOn4L No, Holland is not at all like Australia. It's very small, overpopulated and COLD!!! and there are no wild places. I'd love to visit all of Australia (I was only in Queensland and Sydney), but I reckon that'd take me the rest of my life!!! I did get the feel of the tremendous space though when I was in QNL. I hired a car and drove from Brisbane right up to Boonooroo Park in the north where I had friends. Amazing!
sitithesecond 1 year ago
I agree too.

@sitithesecond Mate, I'm Frog from Brisvegas, I couldn't agree more.
GuillaumeMaze 1 year ago
@GuillaumeMaze haha I'm a pom but I'm half French (the other half is Irish). Brisvegas is a great city! The only negative thing about Aussie nowadays is the smoking ban but they didn't have that when I was there.

it would be great to take vocal and make remix, cause naw all these intruments sounds very primitive and silly.u dont have to listen todays freak and discusting pop.today there are so many wonderfull music and this song and all zztop looks very primitive and stupied u just need to look for it and not listen to what sheaps are listening.there are so many genres of music.pop is the worst.just listen to good idm and then say that todays music is trash.
