  • love this song, best is when it's played at the cricket when Australia go out for play..

  • Happy Australia Day you Beauty!

  • Standing at the limits of an endles ocean...

Stranded like a runnaway lost at sea..

City on a rainy day down at the harbour...

Watching as the grey clouds shadow the bay...

Looking everywhere 'cause I had to find you....

This is not the way that I remeber it here....

Anyone can tell you it's a prisoner island...

Hidden in the summer for a million years....

    Great Souther Land....

  • This song defines Australia IMO

  • This song is the epitome of Australia.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song brings back so many fond memories to mind, of all the time I spent at the back beaches of Victoria, with great friends, cruising in the bug.

  • young einstein...

  • Ich möchte auch mal nach Australien!

  • @Codex0815 Ich auch :)

  • Christ, am so homesick right now... sitting in front of my PC at work in London , just listened to James Reyne's "Reckless" and now this...have Google Maps loaded up and found Speedo's Cafe next door to North Bondi RSL...may play "Flame Trees" next. Must . Fight . Them . Tears...

  • yeh its awsome

  • I was lucky enough to be in The Great Southern Land for five weeks in 1992 for the GB Rugby League tour. Loved the place and the people (except on the sports field!) One day I will be back.

  • As an Aussie I can say Australia is one of many amazing places in the world. Ultimately you can't say it's the best unless you've been out and experienced the rest.

  • well as far as aussies i think they have a great government. with that said, its better than it was just 30 years ago. now as far as those making the current comments, so the hell what if they dont get out and see their country this is a great song.

  • I didnt know Billy Ray Cyrus' cousin was in this video

  • this song is badass.

  • Watching this video and listening to this song makes me sad sometimes.... so many aussies talk about how lucky they are yet they've never wandered outside their cities and cars and experienced the real Australia. Because it's the land that's special, and why we are fortunate to live in it.

  • love this... one day the austrailian sun will shine down on me

  • I see beauty in Australia's terrain, much like I do with Texas. I'd love the opportunity to go out for a week, put a few miles of it under my boots.

  • Born here, luv Australia... i have no interest in travelling outside of Australia as i believe we have it all here...we are very lucky.. The lucky country

  • I clearly remember when this song came out, was still a kid back then , good old times )

  • Este Paiz se parece a donde yo vivo, solo que no tenemos animales que pueden matarte, saludos de la Baja california.

  • Greatest effin country in the world !Where else could you be forgiven for buying your missus flowers from the servo on your anniversary...I'm not saying I did that?Don't judge me.Love this song, love this country and everything in it.

I'm of western samoan heritage but could never be more proud to be counted as an aussie above all else. You know what [just for the record]...this song kicks serious butt'.

  • If only i could afford to go to Australia.

  • There is nothing like being over sees and hearing this song it makes you proud and home sick.

  • Nice mullet Iva :S

  • HAIR GAY HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

  • einfach super!

  • la song de Raúl jeje, cómo me gusta, xDDD

  • Good old Australia, let's play this for the tragedy of Australian terrible massive flood in Queensland.

  • 4 dislikes- IDIOTS that dont know Awesome music when they hear it!

  • My children were born in England and for some years all they knew of Australia was this song - the day we took them 'home' they woke at about 4am to pack with squeals of 'We're going to Australia' - and I could hear this song coming from my daughter's little tape recorder.

  • guys, whats with all the racists comments about other countries. i'm British and proud to be even though i haven't lived there for all of my adult life. one thing i've learnt traveling is that every country is different and beautiful and ugly all at the same time.

  • @tupling123

because most countries dont like people that havent grown up in it. Like blow ins or outsiders... im an aussie living over in ireland at the moment, done a lot of travelling and its hard to be accepted just cos' im not from their country. Australia welcomes everyone with open arms and doesnt care what country you come from... can't say the same for UK

  • I for one will be travelling this great southern land of ours b4 even considering going overseas. All these coments about who has the better country or place to visit is cool n all (you know the freedom of speech thing),

    so, here goes my bit...

If you dont like Australia, either

    (a) dont bother comin here OR

    (b) fuck off if your already here,

we dont want you. It really is that simple.

    You are here by choice.

    For those who love Australia,

take only photos and leave only footprints

  • @frillneck79 Make sure you do what you are saying, brilliant to do. I did it for two years, stopped only due to tragedy but it's pretty much the best two years of almost my entire 61 years. I came to Australia when I was 9 and love this country with a passion. Why visit other countries when we have everything here. In 2 years, NEVER felt threatened at all and stayed on the road when not working to finance touring. I sold my home, everything to do it. I like your comments, a True Blue.

  • @frillneck79 im with you on that one mate!!! True Blue!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @frillneck79 I love Australia and the Australians. You are in my heart forever. Great southern land indeed.

  • @frillneck79 I love Aus, and I miss so much.

  • @frillneck79 agreed.. AUSTRALIA FRACK YEAH!!

  • @frillneck79 i'll leave what i fuckin wanna leave mate your not gonna stop me or anyone with your over the top patriotism

  • Great sound , great music, no matter where you come from, stop beefing and enjoy.

  • the US is a vast country, much larger then austrailia. it contains everyting austraila has and more...beaches, deaserts, mountains, swamps, hammocks, prairies, tundra, rainforest, ect you name it we got it.

BTW not all americans are yankees...only those living above the mason dixon line

    cool song tho

  • @1a2b3cdf3 Oh here we go. America's bigger and better. Mine's bigger than yours. How predictable and silly. Are we 12? Check you facts. Continental US and Australia are roughly the same size in land area (within about 10%) Alaska makes most of the difference. The US is no more vast than Australia when you consider there are only 22million people living in an area approach in the US' who has 320 million. Please, spare us....

  • @kenjryker Seriously, dont feed the trolls.

  • @1a2b3cdf3 Come to Australia, travel the land and then compare the size. Australia is comparable to the US in size but with a tiny population in comparison. Both countries have their own beauty, ours is dangerous anywhere north for the unwary unprepared, the most dangerous animals on land and sea but very safe from the human predator, we don't need guns to protect ourselves from anyone. We are friendly and warm, lived it saw it. Why don't you have a go as well, you will be welcome..

  • Wot's all that bollocks about the USA's beauty? Ever visited the Lake District in England, known as the most beautiful place on God's given earth. Blinded you are! Plus I'd prefer you said you speak American cos' u Yanks certainly can't speak my lingo or spell, it's called in English. Knob!

  • @Haydyn100 A lot of places can lay claim to be the 'most beautiful place on earth' but while i mean no offense, i doubt any place in England (Scotland excluded) would qualify

  • @irR4tiOn4L wtf... scotland isnt in england to even be excluded from it... oldest damn kingdom in europe ya know :D

  • @Haydyn100= That's just one American. Don't put us all in the same boat. England is a beautiful country, I love the small villages in the countryside, and the forests. Australia isso beautiful, I have to words to describe it. If you ever come to the U.S.A., I recommend you see the Hill Country in Texas. Especially the towns of New Braunfels and San Marcos.

  • @vigo894 Ok, I hear u. I can tell u that on my wish list of things to do is a road trip around America so might check out the places that you say. Thanks!

  • loving the mullet :)

  • goddamn thats some good australia!

  • i agree this would be awesome if it was australians anthem

  • Australia is definitley the greatest place on earth. I left America 10 years ago to live in this wonderland and never look back!

  • My heart goes out to australia with the flash floods hope they get it all sorted and hope there's no casulties/deaths

  • @MrDontstareitsrude Thank you so much for your kind thoughts on the Queensland floods. To date, 22 people have died but the cleanup and the getting back to normal life has well and truly begun in earnest. Much appreciated and thank you :-)

  • everytime i hear this song it makes me proud to be aussie born n bred....definately should b aussie national anthem.....no one likes "advance australia fair" makes us sound like a boring bunch of zombies!

  • @mistygorillas3 ur aussie and I'm aussie but lets face it america is way cooler, in its beauty, its entertainment industry, its beautiful scenery.

  • @TheMediahater agree USA nice place to visit but my heart will always b in oz!

  • If I had to pick a country to visit or live in other than the United States I would definitely live in Australia.

  • I love this group and this song so very much! However I would be doing all readers a disservice if I didn't mention one of my earlier YouTube colleague's post, which i feel compelled to say every time I view this...... THE MOTHER OF ALL MULLETS!! What is up!!

  • beautiful song. thanks FOR POSTING :)

  • Que bien? That means good right? Anyway, Im aussie and I love my country

  • Qué buen ritmo. Saludos desde Perú.

  • Oh, Brissy, I miss you, too. Me also, what am I doing in this fucking rain and cold and dark winter in British Columbia? I wanna go back. Pokies, beer, good wine, the reef, the surf, State of Origin, snakes, salties, box jellies, huntsmen--I loved 'em all. Julia could fuck the country to bits and I would still move back in an heartbeat if the circumstances allowed it. Aussies aren't necesarily the easiest folks to get along with, but they take no bullshit. Good people! Go Canetoads!!

  • Amazing. That's done it for me. I'm moving back to Australia. What am I doing in freezing Canada!!

  • Ahhh. . . . . . My beautiful backyard!

  • genius!

  • I love australia

  • Listen to this song, music does not sound like this anymore. There are very few song writers left on this planet who can write lyrics. Songs used to tell a story....not anymore. Long live the 80's

  • awesome

  • Świetna ścieżka dźwiękowa do filmu Młody Einstein :)

  • @Matiti1983

Tak - to ma transportowane na całym świecie przez film Młoda Enstein. Ale to ma wiele znaczeń dla Australijczyków, ponieważ mówi o naszym kraju sprawia, że czujemy się inaczej.

  • Best song; Best Country

  • who thinks this should be the australian national anthem?

  • @cmndo I definitely do!!!

  • @cmndo

Yes I totally agree that it should be our national anthem and have been saying this for years !!

  • @cmndo

I do this song is totally awesome

  • @cmndo 'ken oath.. Aussie Aussie Aussie.. Oy Oy Oy

  • @cmndo Me!!!!!!

  • @cmndo

I just love the line about vegemite !

  • @cmndo it should be mate!

  • this song sooths me and I thank you for posting it.

  • Is it just me or does he look like the Feral Boy "The Road Warrior"?

  • Takes me back......me and Anne - Marie at Ayers Rock mid 80's. I cried as the plane left the Melbourne tarmac 6 weeks later to come back to this shit hole.

  • GREAT SOUTHERN BAND. I love the sounds in this song. I liked it in the 80s and I still like it. It's just fantastic!!

  • Damn... That's a great song. I wanted to do a drum cover for my channel, but I can't get the song thru ITunes, Canada. If anyone knows where I can dload this song, I'd be grateful if you could let me know. Thanks, mates.

Again... A kickass tune, from a great band, from The Great Southern Land.

  • @IMSAYIN2010 glad you found the song ! this is pretty much our national anthem.

  • @IMSAYIN2010 I'm still looking for a download of this great tune. If anyone can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

  • Comment removed

  • I see this video and hear this song and just get so homesick.

  • love this song. love the album. love the band. too bad they never made it big outside australian like midnight oil and the split endz. (and before anyone says anything i know the finn's are new zealanders).

  • @TheSandsie13 maybe it's a good thing they didn't, might have spoilt their music. As it is their sound is pure Australian, thank goodness.

  • @TheSandsie13.........split ENZ (please)

  • TEMAZO!

  • Mullets

  • Great song and nice mullet!!

  • @aotearoawise Brilliant mullet. Amazing that chicks would lob themselves onto dudes who take better care of their hair than the chicks do!

  • Australia is still a "prisoner island".

Full of hungry thieves who will "burn you black".

Just take Kevin Rudd for example ....

The poor soul was STABBED IN THE BACK

by Julia Gillard. He was betrayed. He was fogotten.

Are we gonna let her betray us THAT way ??

Kevin now walks alone .... like a primitive man.

  • @sebbbo77 you must be a very lonely guy... aren't you?

  • @sebbbo77 Wake up bloke, this song is about AUSTRALIA not about the AUSTRALIANS!!!

  • @sebbbo77 Are you high?

  • Underrated? Icehouse is good stuff...

  • A good friend of mine met his wife online, she is from Australia. They renewed their vows last week and her mother flew to the states to attend and is currently still here. We were talking about this song the other night.

  • Iva created the real Australian authentic music. Its always a joy to listen to him and his brilliant voice. Iva got the Australian spirit, he is wonderful. Thank you Maiblume.

  • Soy de Colombia Sur América y esta canción YO LA ADORO, porque habla de Aussie.....pronto estaré allá. Soon I shall be down there.

  • Unreal in the sense of being brilliant!!

  • Awesome Australia !! One of the best 80's songs ever !

  • Yay australia! :)

  • HES GETS HIS POWER FROM HIS MULLET!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this would b a great advert for australian tourism...minus iva's mullet of course!

  • Love this song. Wow its ben over 20 years !

  • Unreal. Thats all I can say.

  • @RodgerRodgerson1

Why unreal. The song is wonderful, outstanding, something real super good.

  • Great souther land of EPIC MULLETS

  • I just love this tune... And the fact that Iva looks so much like my one true passion.. certainly doesn´t hurt either...

  • I was born in the great southern land in 89!

  • same but in 1985 in Melbourne

  • if this ended up as our national anthem is definitely would have been the worlds best anthem for a country

  • @fullysicknick1020 I Highly agree : )

  • Das haste wirklich prima gemacht liebe Maiblume4.

  • Grandi Icehouse!

  • The man can certainly carry a mullet...

  • @onionhead666 as opposed to an "onion" :O

  • Quintessential Australia.

  • yeah boy. love it. much better than todays music.

  • ya gotta love this land we call australia great animals great land and a great big rock in the middle

  • @josh111559 I agree with you and I'm defintely proud to be an australian!

  • @josh111559 the aussies are the greatest people too

  • brian ferry is a woss bag

  • This song makes feel very proud of being an Australian. That's clip is more like an TV ad rather than a music video. I am pretty sure that might attract people around the world to visit our continent!

btw, that singer Iva , is he the one wearing the black jacket in the original music video of this song ?

  • This era was the best for Aussie pop music. INXS, Crowded House (ok the Finns are Kiwis), The Oils, Barnsey n Farnsey and Hunters & Collectors. Great memories. I wanna live there again!

  • back to the 80is :-))

  • why oh why is man of colours not on itunes , i cant find it anywhere , not even on cd grrrrrrrrr

  • Australia is a fabulous country and the people are the greatest! Friendliness, warmth, down-to earthness and humour! I may be only a pom but i love Aussie!

  • Cheers to that!

  • @irR4tiOn4L thanks mate! And i think Great Southern Land should be the Aussie national anthem. Gives me goosebumps (emotion)!!

  • Its one of the unofficial anthems here. We definitely havent forgotten it

  • the words are beaut and the music is stunning. A combination you don't often come across, especially these days.

  • @irR4tiOn4L I got to know Icehouse when I was in Australia in 1988. They'd just released Man of Colours which is also one of the most beautiful songs ever. I've still got the Man of Colours cassette, wish I'd bought the CD though.

  • Man of Colours is the best selling album ever in Australia by an Australian band. Icehouse themselves have been inducted into the ARIA hall of fame in 2006.

I guarantee you that whether or not they know who wrote it, near every Australian has heard this song

  • @irR4tiOn4L It's a truly fabulous song and gives me very happy memories of my stay in Australia. Unfortunately Icehouse is not very well known in Europe for some incomprehensible reason, or at least not in Holland where I live. But maybe they're well known in the UK. These europeans don't know wot they're missing!

  • @sitithesecond Thats a pity for them. Holland is not very much like Australia though. Perhaps you have to see just how big this land is to 'get' the song

  • @irR4tiOn4L No, Holland is not at all like Australia. It's very small, overpopulated and COLD!!! and there are no wild places. I'd love to visit all of Australia (I was only in Queensland and Sydney), but I reckon that'd take me the rest of my life!!! I did get the feel of the tremendous space though when I was in QNL. I hired a car and drove from Brisbane right up to Boonooroo Park in the north where I had friends. Amazing!

  • I agree too.

  • @sitithesecond Mate, I'm Frog from Brisvegas, I couldn't agree more.

  • @GuillaumeMaze haha I'm a pom but I'm half French (the other half is Irish). Brisvegas is a great city! The only negative thing about Aussie nowadays is the smoking ban but they didn't have that when I was there.

  • Danke Maiblume, ich hoere den song taeglich.

  • God I still love this clip and song - brings back sooo many fab memories.

    Music how it should be.....

  • Its all about the hair back then

  • I'm from Mexico, this song I did heard for frist time by rock101 1987, Ice house was and is one group which can make me feel so gooooood, awsome, huge, amazing, beautiful, I don't have words to say more about it, but this is a great group, I fell in love by my self because I like a true music.

  • Buenisimo tema!!!!

  • I used thought he was cute!! the lead singer

  • thanx for posting this. It's from the golden age or our music. Gotta love Iva's mullet too. We live in the best place in the world and it truely is the Great SouthenLand... :)

  • i love this group :)) *dances*

  • Icehouse songs should be a must in times of this hip-hop and rap shit. Listen guys... this is music and not today plastic-pop! Its best next to ZZ top, Simple Minds, U2, Dire Straits, Brian Ferry aso.

  • @josh111559

you forgot great people like Iva Davies.... not to mention all the brillant australian actors making Hollywood its best.

  • @28trichy

it would be great to take vocal and make remix, cause naw all these intruments sounds very primitive and silly.u dont have to listen todays freak and discusting pop.today there are so many wonderfull music and this song and all zztop looks very primitive and stupied u just need to look for it and not listen to what sheaps are listening.there are so many genres of music.pop is the worst.just listen to good idm and then say that todays music is trash.
