I have met many veterans of this war. Some were crazy and lived wandering homeless drunken lives.

Others took regular jobs. Most you would not have known they ever fought in any campaign as they worked quietly, and never talked about the things they endured. Unless, after 20 years or so...you gave them space, and shut yer yap, and listened. From there, they might show you their uniform, maybe some trophys, and later still, their medals, and pictures.

Others you met only once, and no more.

Your comment concurs with my experience.I remember in 1983 as a young lad just starting work, I spoke to a 55 year old guy from Lithuania, recruited into the Waffen SS (many were non Germans after '44) as rear-guard infantry in the retreat West on the eastern front. he didn't talk with many people, just quietly worked.
