i was 12 during this world cup and have seen nothing that comes close in quality since. i was sorry to see denmark go out so early cos i'd been a fan since they made us(ireland ) look like luxembourg at lansdowne road in 85. brillliant team. if only jesper had'nt been so casual, who knows?. i know england's goals were placed artificially high in the list,but u have to say 2 of the goals against poland were crackers. pace, movement ,finishing. they lived up to the hype to some extent in the 80's

My dad told me a few months ago, that he recorded every match on VHS of Mexico 86. I was born about 2 months later, so I was totally unaware of these tapes. But I do remember a lot of blank tapes from when I was a little kid. One day someone broke into our home and stole of the tapes among other things. But that's a damn shame.

Great memories, my first world cup, though unfortunately has remained by far the best. 1990 was the worst ever in my opinion and only USA 94 (and bits of 2002 with all the upsets) have been remotely watchable. Just glad I caught the last truly great World Cup just in time........Anyone know where I can hear a full version of the theme playing in the background? It's bloody awesome!

If goals per game is the best barometer of entertainment value then the mental 1954 tournament was the best, the brutal 1990 tournament was the worst. 2010 at least had the best games and moments in the knockout stage after a mostly tedious group stage, the reverse of 2006. 2002 was good for the upsets. 1998 was the last all-round classic World Cup though.

Is it me or are most of these goals way better than all the goals scored at South Africa '10? England played with the intensity of liverpool and everton in the league, Brasil played as beautifully as ever and were unlucky against France, who also had an amazing technical side. Spain for once had a decent side, and Maradona was out of his mind!

Euro 2004 and Euro 2008 were also largely better than the World Cups in between them. 1990 is still the worst World Cup ever by the way.

@kisbie money is killing the game, look at what has happened to the European club competitions in the last 10-15 years. the European Championships has never reached the quality of the World Cup so the decline won't be as noticable. Personally I judge the g'obal game by the World Cup and we've not had a great tournament since 86. Yes, 1990 was bad but I can't agree it was worse than 2010! It was a shocking World Cup

@hugodrax71 I agree with Jose Mourinho that the Champions League is now bigger and better than the World Cup. (Like most football fans, I have always preferred club football anyway.) Club football is more intense than ever and World Cups are almost a distraction rather than a dream for the top players these days. That is mostly down to the influence of the moneymen, but evolution is morally neutral after all. Which I suppose is the main characteristic of the modern world in general.

@JMR83 Euro 2004 definitely wasn't as good as the one before, but I'd say it was better than any of the last three World Cups - it's still Ronaldo and Rooney's best tournament anyway! As a plus, it did have the greatest giant-killing story in football history. Who cares if Greece didn't play Total Football? Trophies aren't always won by the most flamboyant sides. In fact, they're often the ones who definitely WON'T win.

@JMR83 Ronaldo and Rooney are two of the top 10 players in the world (well Rooney was until recently). So, it does matter that it was their best tournament. These tournaments are about different styles and cultures of football coming together. Greece's style has its place if done well. They were the most organised team by far at Euro 2004 and deserved to win. The problem with recent World Cups is that too many coaches have been trying to copy what they did, without the players to make it work.

There were so many teams and players that made Mex 86 a classic, even little things like the presence of smaller teams like Northern Ireland on Jennings 40th birthday add to the legend. Just watch "Hero" the official FIFA film to remind you of how many legendary teams and players were on display. I never understood why some people overrate 1998 on some forums. Some entertaining teams, yes, but too many bland and forgettable ones too.

@JMR83 Northern Ireland's 1982 story was more of a fairytale. Josimar wouldn't have scored that goal past Jennings in 1982. France and Brazil were very good, and their match was an all-time classic, but everyone remembers them more for Euro 84 and Spain 82 respectively. Arguably 1990 had more drama moments than 1986, despite the football being much lower standard. Don't forget that 1998 was the first World Cup with 32 countries. Still the only one of those that was good all the way through.

There are other top players in the world besides Ronaldo and Rooney. Italia 90 may have been shite for football but for drama spectacle I agree it has never been bettered. 1998 was the first 32 team event, but I found it a mixed bag. Some great teams and players but some like watching paint dry. For every classic like Holland-Argentina there was always an absolute bore like France-Italy or Croatia-Romania. No better than 2006 in comparison.

@kisbie Can't agree. Don't you remember Belgium v USSR or France v Brazil? The latter is one of the greatest games of all time, an amazing match. The Soviets scored some incredible goals in that tournament and Spain were good to watch. Brazil also played some terrific football after the first two games.

If you meant the refs for South Korea's games, then that can be countered by pointing out that every team playing at home gets more decisions in their favour than when they play away. And if you want 'fixed' and 'corrupt', then nothing has yet topped Argentina 1978.

Argentina 78 was far more fair the Korea 02. At least they had genuine star players like Mario Kempes and besides I can not think of any other teams from 78 that would have been worthier winners. Brazil? Hardly looked that great and were a bit physical and un-Brazillian at times. Italy not ready yet and Holland were better in 74.

Yep, Korean cheating and Germany and Turkey getting to the semis with an easy route, a mediocre Brazil champion as well, Argentina getting screwed. Worst ever.
