  • This is a great video! I have a presentation to make in the UAE on using ASL as a 'bridge' to learning English. I would very much like to use this video, if you would give me permission. Also, anything else you would like to share. My audience will be teachers of English from K through College. I, myself, am a college teacher and still see the huge advantages of using ASL to help in the learning of even the more difficult vocabulary and concepts. Their pronunciation is better as well.

  • In ESL you sign “I have two sisters”, I would make a sign for each words. In ASL you would sign “two” and “sister” and then point to myself so you‘re signing “two sisters, me.” ESL is the right language to use and makes sense. When I was little I always had a hard time signing with a few kids who used the ASL, majority of them never made sense. When the ASL users write an essay they never made sense on what they‘re writing and trying to say because of the ASL, our teacher had to correct them.

  • I'm an English teacher in Puerto Rico and I was searching for different methods to use in a highly active kindergarten class. This is simply amazing. I want to experiment with it!!! I think this is a perfect example of future teaching methods... I guess I'll have to research sign language before I start!

  • This is such a fabulous example of how amazing ASL is and how it can even be applied to EL students. It is a visual technique that is so helpful for many students.

  • I just start to learn ASL recently, am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf daing site, --------deafmatching dot c om--------, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.

  • Thanks so much for sharing!!!

  • very interesting! I did a science experiment myself of high school teachers using gestures, (not ASL) vs no gestures and I found that the gesture group did do slightly better on tests about the material in the study, but not by a lot, so I'm excited about ASL! Thanks for the links. In my free time I often watch popular songs sung in ASL for fun :)

  • Hi, I am studying Intent Community Participation at the university of california at santa cruz. This is one of the most amazing things I have seen in regards to fostering the development of ESL while incorporating even another language (ASL). I will be writing mid term essay using this as an example, this is amazing what you are doing and I hope to mimic it someday (after I learn to sign!)

    Thanks

  • hi!! Wow! I feel so flattered! I would love to read your essay when you are finished and if you need any more material just let me know! I got plenty!

  • THank you so much Rick!!

    :)

  • Val, what do you do with words like green pepper? There is no 'one sign' for green pepper, you have to finger spell it... I used your idea and taught the vegetables with ASL, but I left out green pepper!

  • Hi Joelle!

I do this: first i teach the main world like I did with Beans. and then..after a few days i add Green.

You can do that! First pepper (pepper has it´s own sign) and then green.

if your kids are older..I would teach both together.

  • THank you so much!

  • Hi Val, this video is awesome and you have inspired me yet again. You are truly an amazing teacher.

I always do lots of gestures in class. The children like it, gestures are fun, they help the children relax and retain more. But now you've inspired me to go a step further & learn ASL (instead of my made-up gestures). If you recommend any good on-line dictionaries, please post the link up here! muchas gracias Val x

  • Thank you so much for your suggestion! I took ASL in college and was wondering if it would work for ESL, also. Now seeing your results, I will definitely be incorporating it into my lessons. Do you think you could make some videos about the different signs for particular lessons? I think that would really help people!

  • Very nice Val !

  • THank you Jeff!

ASL have so many useful uses!!!

  • Great information, Val. You should probably try to get your findings published somehow. :)
