  • NOW Thats what a FUCKING ASS kicking ROCK and ROLL BABE is supposed to look and sound like! Not those fuckin stupid cookie cutter bimbo's that graduate from SONY/MTV'S school for porno pop tart wanna-bee singers!

  • Comment removed

  • Deborah Harry is a true ROCKSTAR i.e she was part of a band that played REAL instuments, wrote, played and sang their own music, spent years living like a rat in N.Y.C learning and perfecting their craft as music ARTISTS!

Modonna was the proto type of the girly bimbo pop tart singers of today. They're not in a band, they NEVER sing ROCK MUSIC, play instuments, write their own music (apart from bullshit song writer credits) and all use major digital tweeking to sing. Thats a MARKETING TOOL!

  • I remember this video. And the album cover was them with the black lines too, either on the back cover or the front. Can't remember lol.

  • The Nerves > Blondie

  • God, she's absolutely beautiful!

  • Why isn't shit cool anymore?

  • WTF is up with all the debbie harry/madonna comparisons? they're like two completely differently artists who make completely different music, and they're both GREAT at what they do.

  • @purpleteardrops1 True! We might as well compare Eleanor Roosevelt to Martha Washington. What is the point. Deborah Harry will kick both their asses. j/k.

  • I reckon Blondie were the highest point in the history of pop music. The music industry has never had such a ready made sellable package since.

  • @RobDeManc Good call i have to agree! The funny thing is American radio and tv wouldnt give them any air play with a lot of the radio stations directing their DJ's not to play Blondie or the Ramones. Thats why they were big in Australia and England and Europe 3 years before the US public even knew about them. I remember them comming to Australia in 1977 or 78! She was totally fucked up on her first interview on national music telly show called COUNT DOWN. But man she was Sooooooo fuckin HOT!

  • @boltonox She was a total babe. But I didn't know they were supressed in america. How prudish.

  • @RobDeManc Yeah, Political powers panicking i guess. Oh Noooo!!! The Punks are comming! They're like zommbies, BUT worse! They're POLITICAL! Quick Ban IT! Baaaaaaaaaaaan IT! i remember that at the time in Australia, 1977, when Blondie was first shown on Count down, the TV host Molly Meldrum was talking about this GREAT New undiscovered BAND from N.Y.C called Blondie. After watching them, i couldnt understand how they wernt already huge in their own country America. They were so edgey!

  • @boltonox In Britain we had already had the sex pistols to shock us so we took to blondie straight away. I heard that in Australia the radio djs played the wrong side of their single to In the Flesh and thats why it got to number 1?

  • @RobDeManc Not radio Dj's, it was the TV host Molly from Count Down. Count Down was a massive national Music show watched religiously in Assie on late Sat-Sunday arvo's by everyone 25 & under . He announced X-offender as a never before seen WORLD first exclusive only on Count Down! But the B side clip, In The Flesh got played by mistake! The next day everyone at school was talking about BLONDIE!. The song went straight to No1 so they swapped Xoffender to B side and Flesh, To A side from then on.

  • @boltonox Wow sounds like TV host Molly did them a favour. X Offender or In the Flesh were not hits in England. Our first Blondie track was "Denis" in 1978.

  • @RobDeManc He sure did! but it worked. Xoffender was never shown on tv in Australia because it became the b side to flesh anyway. I think it would have done great on its own. Denis did ok hear but maybe a bit too bubble gummy sounding for Aussie tastes. I still remember her first LIVE tv appearence on countdown in 1977. She was really HIIIIIIGH! funny as shit! She was talking incohearently and giggling hear & there to herself all through the show. Molly had this paniced exspression on his face.

  • @RobDeManc In Australia back then, record labels, particularly smaller one's, would release NEW artists (ABBA, BLONDIE) here first in an effort to gauge response and help estimate required record production numbers for world markets. 15 years before MTV Australia had 4-5 popular music tv shows. Having a small English speaking 98% caucasian population with national music programs watched by millions at exactly the same time meant responses could be quantified very quickly and accurately.

  • yes...terribletim was here.

  • Btw I would change the wording of that first comment. I don't think that Madonna intentionally marketing sexuality in a deliberately exploitative song she did not write (Like a Virgin), is admirable or strong. It reflects instead a willingness to be exploited to get ahead. I do think that Harry, without intending it, helped to break down certain barriers as to how women could perform. That doesn't mean predecessors were "weak", but that there were limits. Harry is the iconic star of that era.

  • I hope Debbie has found happiness in her middle years.

  • What's with all the Madonna comparisons? Different styles of music, different levels of talent, different levels of class, hardly even the same era. About all they have in common is that they're blonde.

  • @xreddragonx-They were from different eras. But there is a perception-and to her credit, something Madonna has admitted, albeit a little belatedly-that the role Madonna played, of the strong, sexually independent woman in music, a role we may take for granted now, was a role first played by Debbie Harry and that Harry was a direct influence on the persona Madonna (and subsequent women performers) developed. It's a question of due credit and the fact that Harry is not properly appreciated.

  • @ihasch So were all female singers were "weak" and "sexually dependent" before Debbie harry? I don't think she was trying to make a feminist statement as much as being herself--she was a fun, edgy and sexy lady. Madonna was an over the top attention whore, who albeit made a few catchy tunes early on, was more of a product than an artist. I've heard Madonna reference Iggy Pop as influence too, but that doesn't make them similar.

  • @xreddragonx-Harry was not intentionally trying to make a feminist statement, but that's how it was interpreted and the role of women in music was an issue that came up very early in press about Blondie. The difference was recognized rightly or not. A long subject.

I not a Madonna fan either but she marketed herself in the same role that DH had played a few years before-the blonde sex symbol, and at times the overlap was blatant (eg, the wedding dress routine). People see the direct influence.

  • @ihasch Compared to Blondie Madonna is very diluted.

  • Happy Birthday Debbie!!

  • es mucho mejor que madonna

  • Wow, what a striking beauty! when ever i watch her i get a serious compulsion to kiss her!

  • leave hanging me hanging telephone ..I miss jumping on the couch to this song..love the guitar solo at the end. It also makes a great highway song or running song.

  • @willieraye Nice

  • Amazing cover, but I'll always love the original by the Nerves. (:

  • @saranham is it a cover?

  • What is this 2010 music planet I have been banished to?

    Bring back the 80's NOW!

No more false stars, no more American Idol, NO MORE!

  • Mmmm...Just hearing her sing about phone booths is enough to make want to teletransport back to the 80's...

  • Her looks that she gives the camera from 1:39 - 1:42 could melt any heart. Debby Harry: the most gorgeous, feminine woman ever that looked like she could kick your ass at the drop of a hat. Love it!

  • So...complimenting a strong & attractive woman makes me a "desperate wanker"? Next time I'll keep my comments bland and politically correct so as to not frustrate the more insecure viewers.

  • @iangoblin71 Her look at 1:14-1:15 just does it for me!

  • hahaha...yea, I guess I have a thing for the strange ones too!

  • THIS IS NY!!!!

  • Washigton Square back in the day, the other end, the village CBGB's, and of course smoking a dobbie, now we are talking

  • An amazing song covered by Blondie at the height of their power. And thank God they did it in 1978 -- just barely at the beginning of the music video era. Can there be any more sublime shot in all of video history than Debbie doing her face in the mirror in this video? And the song so totally rocks!

  • you love dick

  • Debbie my faaaaaaaaave girly... I love everything about her!

  • She's my style icon.

  • I like her attitude, the glow in her eyes in this video. So cocky and confident!

  • This is good, but i like the Original version by the nerves better

  • Why are people disagreeing? The Nerves version IS better.

  • IslandersLikeMe

They disagree with you because they think you're wrong, is that so hard to understand?

Seriously you are fighting with Blondie fans so it's a losing battle. I think most people prefer the Blondie version, even though it's not the original, is because it's simply the most famous version which people are used to.

  • 1:14 She is the only female performer I can think of who is confident enough to make weird faces on stage XD

  • Londonman84,

I agree with you about her being confident enough to make weird faces on stage like no other, but I think she does that because she's a true punk!

  • Brilliant

    Great Share

    Thanks Foxfire

  • Dude, Debbie Harry was and still is hot! Sure it's funny, but you should also check out Devo doing "Back n Forth" live. I saw that when it aired and I still get a kick out of it.

  • 1:48 wtf?

  • Maybe it's not obvious (2 U) or maybe cuz you're only 15 so I will explain why she's shaking like crazy at 1:48...She's singing "Ohh I can't control myself" so she's shaking like she can't control herself.

  • I know. Just looked real wierd thats all.

Only 15? Do you remember being fifteen? I certainly understood it, thought she looked funny.

  • @ashley101ashley might it have been Answer The Phone - Mina?

  • She is 63 now and is still HOT.....

  • Birthday July 1st 1945 Look it up......

  • Wow - which means she's 33 in this video. That's young in the broad view, but not by New Wave/punk standards.

  • KicK aSs

  • Blondie is the shit, she's awesome XD

  • What a killer song. I love when her New York accent creeps in, especially on the first verse ("...hawl / ...wawl / ... cawl").

  • Such a great tune.
