Going into Dixie Square alone would be insane. Going in there at all is actually pretty stupid. It is dangerous - and not because of bums or criminals or dogs. It's the building itself - it could fall on you at any time.
If I ever make the trip to Harvey, I will go in there. Wild dogs, homeless people, gangbangers, and unstable buildings don´t really scare me. I find it funny that the people who go in this place all the time to take pictures tell others not to enter it.
It's pretty easy: just because I'm willing to take a particular risk doesn't mean I can recommend in good conscience that anyone else do it. Especially random people on YouTube - I don't know their age, physical condition, maturity level or anything else. So I have no problem saying "hey, the smart thing is not to go". I'm not going to undersell the risk and have someone go out there and get hurt. I don't need that on my head. I believe they call it being responsible.
Probably depends on your frame of reference. If you live in an economically depressed area, Harvey might not look that unusual. But if you're used to a community that most people would consider "average" or "middle class" then I believe you would find Harvey exceptionally unpleasant. After at least a dozen trips in the last five years I'm very familiar with the town, and I'm still uncomfortable every time I'm there.
seeing recent video of the mall and after the fire a couple days ago(07/21/09) I just don't see how that place could be saved. Sad as it is to say, they'd be better off just tearing down what remains and be done with it. I would guess the the entire support system would be very weak with all the elements getting inside and the occasional fires.
If I ever get the chance, I would be one of those daring enough to explore what remains.
It passed the point of no return decades ago. The problem is regulations and costs to deal with the materials the mall was made of. asbestos mainly. Then there is the corruption and other problems from the city of Harvey government. With the amount of government to deal with in cook county IL and the economic conditions of harvey, it's simply not worth the risk for anyone to tear it down and try to redevelop. That's why it got this way and will remain this way until those conditions change.
Yes, people, and some local business, had used the mall as dumping grounds. Most of the stuff dumped is now sitting where Woolworth's was, and there's tons of junk at TurnStyle's loading dock.
This song fits the mall's situation. Good pick dannyshortbus, as well as a good vid.

Harvey doesn't look that scary on Google Earth satellite pictures. Is it really as bad as everyone says it is?

That answers my question. I know exactly what you mean. I have found myself lost in towns like that. Not fun!!

Just people dumping. At one point there were quite a few of them inside the mall as well.
