I always get tears in my eyes because my dad played just like Oscar. My dad wrote music that Irving Berlin wanted to buy (but put Irving's name on it), and my dad turned it down. My dad ended up entertaining the troops in ww2, and had an offer to head cbs music after the war, but turned it down, not thinking it was a great way to raise a family. I love hearing Oscar because it reminds me so much of my dad. People just had to hum a song, and he played it thousands of times before.
I have never in my life heard ANYBODY play like Oscar. Even when a pianist plays 1 of his pieces identically note for note, it still doesn't "taste" the same. I think it was his style of playing and also his POWER. With the possible exception of Art Tatum (who was in a class all of his own) when it comes to Jazz piano, I've yet to hear anybody compatible to Oscar, nor I do not think we ever will. Sadly, grand master musicians seem to no longer be in demand or have a place in this world.
@gjc82071 I agree, I think it was Peterson who said after he watched Tatum play he didn't play the piano for a week because it was so overwhelmed with what he'd just seen. I think I'd be the same after watched Peterson play! To me, each pianist has their own voice on the instrument just like if singers have their own voice. Even if singers sung the same song, emphasied the same words etc, it wouldn't be exactly the same.
@crazypianolady You're right (about Tatum). Oscar & Tatum were friends & even played/toured together, but Oscar always felt a little uncomfortable around Art. (what pianist wouldn't? LOL!). Oscar has spoiled for me, nearly all other jazz piano music. I mean, I just can't really get into any other jazz pianists except Oscar. All others are to me are relegated to "background noise". (but I like Dave Brubeck) As a child I had the opportunity to take lessons from Oscar, but we lacked the money.
@zranney2 I was actually "accepted" but at the time It was just financially/logistically impossible for my family. We lived in the USA & he was giving lessons in Quebec, Canada. We would have had to move there, apply for visas, my step-father was a traveling musician, etc. It would have been nearly impossible. I would have likeed at least 1 lesson, or just the chance to meet him. I did see him in concert twice, but I was too young to appreciate it (10 or 11yo) & remember very little of it.
@Nobert93 haha i actually have no idea, but somehow its in my itunes with no album, along with a bunch of other tracks with the trio live...it must be off of a live collection with the trio.

AH HA! Caught ya, Mr. Peterson--your masterful fingers play the same line at 3:38 as in Love for Sale, at 2:10.
