With it they won the 1983 F1 drivers' title

Btw, that engine was based on the M10/M12 roadcar engine which had been designed in 1961

yes it was, but to make almost 1000hp per litre back in 1983, based on a roadcar engine no less, was quite a feat

BMW found some fuel additive which had been developed during WW2, which meant that they could raise the boost on the turbo to insane levels without having the mixture detonate prematurely. I think they had 5,6 bars of qualifying boost. Renault complained that the fuel BMW was using was illegal, but in the end Piquet was champion with Brabham-BMW that year.

BMW only used old blocks which already had been used on roadcars. Why? They reasoned that that if those blocks had stayed in one piece during all those years, they wouldn't brake down even when put to use in F1. Rumours also say that the BMW factory workers relieved their bladders on these engine blocks to make them tougher still.

Nonetheless it was based on a roadcar engine at a time all the other teams used engines designed for F1 alone. By 1984 the limits had been reached.

In 1984 Piquet often had the fastest car, and took 9 poles. However in the races his car rarely lasted to the end. The turbo, engine or gearbox always broke down. Nonetheless this engines still won races in 1986 and was renamed Megatron and used rather successfully by Arrows in 1988. In refinement the BMW engine was no match for the TAG Porsche V6 turbo or the dominant Honda V6 turbo, but it made insane amounts of power, and took the first turbo title in F1.

actually that engine was pretty much undrivable on twisty circuits like Monaco, because the turbo lag was unbelievable. It was nothing, nothing, nothing, and then suddenly 1400hp at once. Designing a car to harness this power on racetracks took all of Gordon Murray's engineering skill. He later designed the McLaren F1 supercar.

Actually the BMW dyno only went to 1400hp and the engine exceeded that according to Piquet. Maybe 1420, maybe 1450, maybe 1500...
