In my opinion, his explanation is incomplete. Even if he didn't feel "high on life" and all that, he would still stay away from these substances. He is a Muslim and Islam prohibits all drugs that are not medically prescribed: there are numerous verses in the Qur'an and Hadīth that ban intoxicants, including alcohol.
