matbecket, these kids are 8 and 10 years old. Schools dont start offering violin lessons until theyre 7....how could they possibly have reached suzuki 4 yet?? theyre doing damn well.

You can start Suzuki whenever you want, however, if you get a private lessons teacher or join the community music program. I started Suzuki when I was 4.

I'm not saying that they aren't doing well, they are for when they started, but the music program where I live has made me used to kids starting at a much younger age.

Benjapapa, I'm glad you got a chance to see this video (and I'm NOT offended by your remark). But I will say this:

If you find black people playing the violin weird, then blame your self-imposed isolation and the American Media for not showing you a broader, clearer and more honest representation of reality.

It's a shame someone had to make a comment like that about children at a recital. But it speaks volumes about the quieter thought patterns of people in our country.

Well, it's a shame you don't get across the pond more often. You would know that black people playing the violin is not out of the ordinary. Black people don't only rap (THANK GOD)...we are opera singers, ballet dancers, orchestra conductors...and have been for many years. Shall I go on? As a world traveler (who loves Europe btw) I am glad that the diversity, which is lacking in some countries, allows me to see that expression of talent comes in ALL colors...including black.

You make a very good point, KC2XL. I'm just glad to see anyone expressing interest in classical music and instruments such as the violin. Hopefully someday a video of a black person performing an act that doesn't fit predetermined stereotypes of what one would believe they should be doing will not strike us as so odd, as one would see these talented performers simply as other individuals.

Keep playing the violin, as it increases your math ability. My son started violin at 3 and played until 6, when he REFUSED to continue Suzuki, but he finished AP Calculus in 11th grade. He is 23 now and says he wishes he'd NEVER quit playing violin.
