Al....when looking at the real railroad crossings they actually have ties or wood on either side of the railing and then they have the road pavement up against that ...it is just not pavement ...you have the wood on either side of the rails on the crossings!! i don't know why people don't pay this more attention!!!
@michaelclinite It's called SMOOTH-IT by Woodland Scenics and the PAVING TAPE is also by Woodland Scenics. They both can be found at most Hobby Shops or online. You will not see it at AC Moore or Michaels Craftstores though
Where you said you would make a dip in the plaster(?) for room to allow the trip pin on kadee coupler's sense nothing else should be hanging, a majority of club's use a pair of pliars made for slightly bending the trip pin up for clearance so you won't have to sacrifice the look of the concrete by having to add clearance contour and making it look more like a drainage pit. Good stuff though. Not a problem with me though now that I don't use kadee's anymore as I have upgraded to sergent couplers
Hi. I'm enjoying your videos. Never heard of Smooth It. Always used plaster, Hydrocal, spackle, and such. I'll try the Smooth It when I do my roads and container terminal. Did you ever use a screed to lower the road between the rails? I'm thinking of making one with a couple of pieces of plastic. Just a thought.
hey what is the mixture made up of? and i tried this with plaster and it worked all good but it was hard to clear the gaps for the trains to go over, so the trains dont go over it now =/
yeah this works good....just did the same thing in O scale recently. You can extend the road edging tape all the way across the tracks and put cardboard strips under the tape and in between the sections of track giving you a nice crisp road edge through the entire crossing. The cardboard strips act as a kind of "form" which holds the wet mud in place until it drys.
hey al your amazing i learned more from you then any other how to video ive seen hey whats the stuff you mixed up is it that stuff called smooth it by woodland scenics? take care....j.d
I usualy buy watter putty from lows and buy something to color the putty to make my roads and it dont srink I have not tried the stuff you can buy that is for that ect but I mightr one day and see what is is but its fun making your own roads ect cool keep it up with the how to videos
No. but you cant reuse it. BUT why does it matter? The track stays the same and after you pave the road over it, the track is NOT distorted so it is fine.
Any tips for doing this over turnouts? I'm looking at building a layout that focuses on a lot of street running and switching. Thanks. Love all that you've done Al!
Al - You're the best man. I watch your videos all the time. I need to have you on my show very soon. Drop me a line sometime soon and we can schedule something. Peace - Marty
Al, whoops, you got a 16:9 - 4:3 conversion issue. No biggie, just makes everything look tall and skinny... :-) The techniques are still very helpful and appreciated!!!
Tape? Whar is Tape? Is that what people USED to record on in the 1980's and some of the 90's? No of course I do not use Tape. i use a Nikon P80 Digital camera but I clicked the SHARP effect on Windows Movie maker giving it that grainy look
Thats pretty much the same way I did mine also, except I used patching plaster not to be confused with plaster of paris. I just liked the plaster because its far cheaper then smoothit.
Ohh Shit. I just looked at my own video for the first time right now and I notice it is not in widescreen. It is all square. thats what I get for trying new things on Windows Movie Maker
Thanks Al I appriciate the video, i have my engine facility tracked laid right now and I am going to show this to the scenery development team at the club so I can get a couple people working on getting ours dont and completed.
I would guess that you just put the paving tape on the cork on one end and on the ground on the other. The length of the tape doesn't matter, but it will determine the grade of the road to the crossing. That's what I will do, but I don't know if it will work. Experimenting can be good for you sometimes...
Hey big al, i did my roads a different way. Isnt the smooth it the same thing as wallpaper compound? Because i used wallpaper compound, and it makes good roads on my layout. Also i made my crossings different. Instead of just going over the rails with smooth it or wallpaper compound, i cut off rails, and put them in between the 2 rails what will actually be used. That would be the dividing part of the smooth it and the rail. Like it would work as a insert. Its kinda hard to explain. Nice video!
Why am I addicted to watching your "how to" videos??? I've been in model railroading for 40 years, been published in Model Railroader twice, (once on the cover) and once in Great Model Railroads. Yet I find your video very interesting, entertaining and yes, informational. I definitely plan on trying the smooth it paving techniques. Keep up the great videos.
For making the groovs in the track for the wheel flages, I take an old set of plastic wheels and just roll them over the crossing on the track and that makes the perfect size grooves. Thanks again!
Thats what I plan to do. I'm going to use an old set of wheels and run them along the track. I'm also going to do what Al said and use cheap Walmart paint to color the plaster a nice gray.
Al needs to go on David Letterman or Jay Leno. I mean, who ever heard of a Black quasi rapper gang dude producing "How to Train Video's". I mean...what are the odds? LOL.
im sooooooo glad u made this video al!! ive been wanting to know how to make a road over the tracks so bad especailly now since i have two layouts that im going to be adding my roads in. also, how long does it usually take for all of it to dry?
Thanks for the tips, when I did the road on my layout I waited til the plaster was completely dry to file out the inside part. Much better to do it while its not hard dry...
Yea I had a RETARDED moment for real!! i kept saying dry but I meant HARD. Damn I was temporarily retarded. My bad dawg! but yes it is much better to do this when it is not hard. But when it starts to get firm it is not a good time because it comes up in chunks and bigger pieces are removed
hmmm i guess thats pretty realistic good job al thats amazing its cool

What sandpaper? I do not remember using sandpaper with this video. I only used sandpaper when I was sanding the smooth-it after it dried.
I do go over the tracks with a bright boy type of thing that cleans the tracks
