I think RK wanted to explore the north west territory with Fraser so he could meet up with Fraser's sister again, who he fell in love with at first sight. Otherwise RK would be extremely unhappy in the boring life of riding a dog sled around in the cold without a hat. Even Fraser would become bored out there, after experiencing the city where all the training he had in his youth were so suited for being a super crime fighter. There are no bad guys in the tundra except for maybe a litter bug.
You have uploaded many clips from Due South so maybe you can help me: I've been looking for the longest time for a clip (video or audio) of the little piano tune they used to play at the end of many Due South episodes. It was a nice, but quite sad tune, maybe around 30 seconds long, and would almost always lead into the end credits' theme, with maybe 2 seconds silence as the 'Executive Producer' credits rolled.
I'd be SO grateful if you have a clip with this piece :)
As for the below comments...there may be "hundreds" of F/V shippers but there are *thousands* of F/K shippers because the subtext between Fraser and Kowalski is quite obvious to those not being purposefully blind to it. However, there is no reason to assert that Fraser stopped caring about Vecchio just because he's with Kowalski. Does everyone stop loving their friends when they find their spouse? Of course not. Vecchio will always be important to him.
@EquuZombie Please don't assume that all who don't see the F/K subtext are "purposefully blind." Most of us probably aren't - we just see friendship without romance/flirting between Fraser and RayK, and that is perfectly acceptable. We are NOT stupid for not seeing it. And really, friendship is what the original writers of the show intended - not romance.
@NancyK97 I didn't say you were stupid for not seeing it. My point was that there are many, many more people who see F/K subtext (even my usually oblivious husband noticed it) than see F/V subtext (which I have never noticed despite my pretty thick slash goggles). Paul did not do a "poor job of it" if the subtext is obvious to as many people as it is. I'm sorry that your 'ship is in the minority but accusing Paul of favoritism because the show ends with Kowalski smacks of sour grapes to me.
@EquuZombie There are far more F/K shippers than F/V shippers - I'll admit that - but I think a lot of those F/K shippers became shippers through fanfic, not by watching the show. Or they were brainwashed into the pairing through other F/K shippers.
I just resent your attitude - that F/K shippers are the superior ones because they see subtext that isn't glaringly obvious to every single person out there. And if want to accuse PG, I will - the ending of "COTW" was a huge mistake by him.
@NancyK97 Wow, talk about "attitude!" Your sour grapes must make for a tasty "whine," since you're the one who's making anti-F/K statements and disparaging Paul on multiple DS clips. If anyone is being condescending and feeling superior, it's you. Your favorite character not getting the ending you wanted sucks (I know, I've been there) but it's no reason to continually attempt to spoil the enjoyment of others with spiteful comments and disparaging replies to anyone who actually liked it.
@EquuZombie I'm only giving my own opinion - the ending of "COTW" sucks because PG favored one actor over another and forgot that not every fan of dS likes F/K slash. Some of us just can't stomach F/K slash because we just don't see it on screen, and we resent F/K fans shoving it down our throats. We also resent PG changing the original ending to ignore Fraser's friendship with RayV!
If you want to disagree with me and enjoy "COTW," then do!
@EquuZombie I meant to say: "We are NOT stupid for not seeing anything other than friendship between Fraser and RayK." The subtext isn't always obvious to everyone!
I love the gorgeous scenery and the beautiful sled dogs, and Fraser's bittersweet goodbye to his parents. But it's pretty obvious that Paul Gross was favoring the actor who played RayK, who is Canadian, over the actor who played RayV, who is American. Fraser shouldn't have chosen one Ray over another! And the epilogue for several of the characters - Turnbull, Frannie (single motherhood - ugh!) and RayV (stuck with Stella - yuk!) - is just mean. They deserve better.
I don't think it was favouritism,or even the fact that Fraser and RayV had been apart for a year or so,or even the fact that Fraser was canonically the only person RayK had. But (as Paul Gross admitted) they were fueling the subtext between Fraser and RayK so I think it was mostly that (I mean, everyone who's old enough probably assumed right away that they were going to end up together and this is as close as they could get while still keeping it subtext)
as for RayV and Stella : that seemed very sudden but not totally unbelievable (and he's not "stuck" if that's were he wants to be ;)
Frannie: single motherhood is not a bad thing, she was obviously happy with what she had (although personally I always imagend she ended up with TUrnbull),she also has a lot of family to help her if she ever needed that...
@fentina I agree - I wanted Frannie to end up with Turnbull.
And I do think single motherhood would be a bad thing for her. She has no earning potential to raise that many children on her own, so she would either have to go on welfare or rely on her family (particularly RayV) for financial support, or both.
I prefer for RayV to break up with Stella and go back home, and Fraser to return to Chicago (with or without RayK) to spend time with RayV, instead of ignoring him.
@fentina Ah (as Fraser would say) - there we disagree. I saw no subtext of slash between Fraser and RayK; I saw much more slash between Fraser and RayV, and the hundreds of Fraser/RayV slashers agree with me.
If Paul played up the subtext, then he did a very poor job of it. And I think, with his favoritism to CKR, he missed the chance to win back RayV fans (remember that they were the ones who lobbied for Due South's uncancellation) by having Fraser go off with RayK and ignore RayV. :-(

Fraser's mom, Caroline is actually his wife in real life. Eeek, she probably didn't get over that one for a while.
