England long ago ceased being a major force. Sure, Rooney is good and maybe one or two others are top quality, but that's it. The explanation for poor performance at the WC isn't hard to find if you're not English. We're not better than England, but we're also less deluded about how good we actually are.

But also because Dempsey's goal was soft -- so we were fortunate to get it. I mean, it was great what Dempsey got the shot off -- that took some work -- but the shot itself should never have gone in.

It was nearly impossible to field any talent without a domestic league to professionalize the sport. Before that, go abroad if you're amazing or go to college if you're good with the potential to become great or even amazing.
Now that we have them we can build a talent pool, for home and for export, which can be refreshed regularly by the feed from collegiate and amateur/youth development leagues..
Finally we've reached that market. No matter as to how it took us to make it: it's done.
