I've done marathons. Do folks who train & run ultras have jobs? What percentage of the trek does one walk in an event like this... roughly? The hidden water is a brilliant idea.
:) wow, I am very impressed of the "hidden-water" detail. I thought I was the only one who did it. :) Were I live it is over 100ºF easily in summer. But what I do is carrying the water I will hide. That is a big store compared to mine! :) Very good. Very clever, always keep hydrated. When you arrive to the point it is really like an Oasis. sure.
Depends most just consider getting from one check point to another in specific time. It isn't like they are thinking "Run 10:00 minute miles the whole way".
@Cordobike I have just started training for the NYC Marathon and I put 2 gatorades and 2 liters of water hidden in different spots along my trails. I thought I was the only one that did that. I guess not lol.
I'm amazed at what you can do being someone who doesn't really see himself running that far unless forced, I run on average 3-7 miles at one time, my question is how do you keep your knees and spine from getting worn out from all that impact? my knees never hurt and I've ran up to 12 miles with a ruck, but without a ruck I get the worst lower back pain, just curious and keep on the keeping on.
Dude why don't you wear shorts with two back pockets that are extra deep [I had running shorts tailor made with extra deep pockets.]
During hot summer runs, I carry one bottle of frozen water in each pocket and carry two more; one in each hand, for a total of 4. This gets me through a two hour jaunt. All the best. DG

81 degrees is a cool run for me...Where I'm from it reaches 110 degrees. I am from South Texas, as arid as it comes.

Does a ultramarathon runner worries about PACE?
