One nice thing this game (along with Karateka) did was try to realistically emulate karate. No one else has tried to do that since Yie Ar Kung Fu, and later Street Fighter, introduced the concept of knockout fighting.
can someone help me? there was an arcade game that was cooler than all of this and perhaps came out at the same year or earlier and the asian judge would say FULL POINT!. when you got a hit or a win.
I actually beaten the exact same game you've reviewed, Dommiesan, and I actually quite enjoyed it. Sure, the graphics are pure dog crap and there's virtually no music at all, the main factor is that I really enjoyed, as it provided me with challenging gameplay and the ability to experiment with difference control combinations to perform advanced moves like the forward jump and the reverse punch.
I'm sorry if you like crappy games like Karate Champ. It was a horrible game when it first came out and it's still horrible. And no, I never get angry at video games during a review. Don't get all pissy with me just because you like bad games.
Don't show your stupidity. Karate Champ is a trailblazer for arcade fighters. Check my videos to see my Karate Champ machine, it's in really nice shape. Of course the NES version is shitty- that's a given
Don't show your stupidity about my review. In case you haven't noticed, my review is of the NES version, not the arcade. Which you admit yourself is shitty.
As a reviewer, you do have the right to your opinion. What may be a bad game for you may not always be a bad game for others.
For me, I found Karate Champ to be a fun game to play with friends in my younger years and it definitely loses something to the single player. I actually had a lot of fond memories playing against my friends in this, flawed as it may be.
It's no perfect port, but I found it alright and know there's much better options out there.
oh ya, you also have your jumping attacks and ducking attacks which is why i say its complicated, there is a fair variety to how you can take out your oponent. a very hard game even if you know how to pull off the different moves, sometimes they dont seem to work.
Have you ever tried playing it 2 player? Me and my cousin and my brother all played this game once for about 6 hours straight taking turns kicking each others asses. It took us a while but we figured out how to do all the different attacks. The game basically plays like a complicated version of rock paper scissors, with certain attacks getting past others, and certain attacks blocking or dodging others.
I remember buying this piece of shit for $5 at a garage sale when I was nine. It's funny, I too thought it was a different game, though I don't remember what. A half an hour after buying it I went back to the garage sale and asked for my money back, but they refused (naturally).
International Karate was actually a different game by a different publisher. The game was similar enough to Karate Champ that Data East filed a lawsuit. They ultimately lost though - a judge decided it was similar, but not identical and that Data East couldn't hold the rights to the video game version of an entire sport.

@newaxelman no that's not it. this is it, though i don't hear the judge saying anything, just a bubble with words, /watch?v=2JhZrcjY_VQ
a shame because this game was fucking amazing in the arcade along with the original punch out(pre that faggot mike tyson).

This guy needs a crash course lesson in Karate Champ. The game set the standard for games like tekken and sf2.

Please don't bleep out the curse words. Just be all natural. Your reviews are great. Keep it up.

Thanks for the information, I didn't know that. The games are indeed very similar.
