  • there wont ever be a gifted more talented racing driver we will ever see than senna in any auto racing period

  • I love seeing the master at work

  • What a brutal sounding engine!!!

  • What a fantastic lap, committed, flat out, that Honda V12 sounds amazing.

  • thank you Mosley for killing F1..

  • thank you for not putting music in this fucking video....let honda engine blow up our ears 0:43 so sexy car what a beast

  • one dislike! nice try, Prost

  • @shrapnelV seems like Piquet joined Prost on the dislikes.

  • he is the baddest of the bad ass...and there is no other.

  • Apparently cars in those days had a tendency to understeer, so Senna blipped the throttle through the corners to unsettle the rear and turn the car in better, senna was incredible.

  • Funny part is fastest lap for this race was a 1:55:161. No doubt senna will never be matched behind the wheel

  • 1991 Senna 1:47:811

    2011 Button 2:01:813

    something is wrong

  • @grgrdb Its wrong brother 1991 Senna pole lap 1:47:8

2011 Sebastian Bieber made the pole lap 1:48:3

  • i have a little problem i can´t stop watching this video

RIP the amazing driver ever lived

  • its more impressive now i see this 20 years later, its very similar speed to a modern f1!, very technical advanced cars were these

  • Spellbinding. Just listen to the way he manages the throttle.

  • Senna was like Maradona in football. Never again we'll see such geniuses

  • @darwinism Senna > all Pele > all

  • @darwinism14 People consider Pelé and Maradona as kings, but for me Fangio and Senna were the true kings, and I'm brazilian and I love soccer! lol

  • stunning

  • I like how people will allways be remembered on Sennas great laps. We remember on every single move he did on the track. It was just magical. On Schumacher we will only remember how many titles he won. How he won it? Nobody will know it in 30 years. It was nothing special. But in 30 years everybody will says: hey can you remember on Sennas lap, race, move on that track in1984/85/86/87..? Suzuka, Spa, Monaco, Interlagos. Just choose one. They were all great. The one and only perfect race driver.

  • o melhor do mundo

  • 17 years, now. R.I.P :(

  • watching this with proper headphones on is 100% win

  • F1 needs to turn the driver aids off. Senna was only beaten because Prost and Mansell were driving computer aided Williams

  • @vasantos

Yes and that is why Senna hated the traction control. He said that anybody can just floor the gas now.

What made Senna so great was his throttle control and you can hear it hear it here though the corners "bam bam bam". Jonathon Palmer calls it "Stabbing" the throttle.

  • listen to that engine! thats when F1 was F1 Not this v8 soon to be vr 1.6L shite

  • @buru027 I think they will have 1,4 or 1,5 L engines with 4 cylinders turbocharged. 1,6 L were the V6 turboengines till 1988. They sounded pretty cool too. But with 4 cylinders they will sound like overpowered motorbikes. And not like a Formula one. And i agree. The V8 sucks. The V10 of 2005 was the last good sounding engine. Did your hear it live? I heard it in Austria 2003. It was music in my ears. Very brutal and very loud. But that Honda sound of 1991 beat it all.

  • @Saki2407 No I hadnt. Only at deomstrations have i heard the V10s of the zero's. I still much prefer the old V12 of the Honda and the Ferrari. The V10 Renault of 92/93 wasnt bad either!

  • @Saki2407 The V6's were 1.6L, Inline 4's will be 1.5L/

  • this sound omg HONDA POWER

  • This lap is just amazing. Weaves through traffic coming out of Eau Rouge, and blasts through a huge dust cloud and more traffic before the bust stop, and he still takes pole by more than a second...

  • like butter

  • and 20 years later with all the improvements the 2010 quali time was only 2 seconds faster...

  • @NewYankee01 And he will be in the middle of the peloton

  • wow love the word for field! had to look it up.

  • @NewYankee01 Is "peloton" the wrong word? Here in Portugal we say that (pelotão)...

  • field, group, bunch or pack, we use a few words, you speak great english so im not one to correct, i love how foreign people who speak english use native language if they dont know the word, all the english are thrown by 1 word! best word to use for peloton is field ( then you can use midfield as the word for middle group) though that has another meaning which is campo.

  • @NewYankee01 Ok, thank you for your explanation

  • That's also the shot in which the Brabham "magically" appears. So it looks to me like someone edited footage of the last few moments of the 1:47.811 lap onto the end of footage of a lap he did after that.

  • There's some inconsistency in that clip though, especially at the very end: he passes a Tyrrell into the Bus Stop chicane, passes nobody else afterwards, then as he crosses the line, "magically", the car behind is suddenly a Brabham. Right when the camera changes after the Bus Stop, the "target time" changes from "1:47.811," which is allegedly the time of the pole lap we're watching, which obviously makes no sense, to "1:48.878."

  • 1:31 BALLS!

  • 1 sec. ahed the second place. Almost one eau rouge.

  • How can you not love the 3.5L era especially V12s?

  • Bloody hell! Flat out of Radillon and there are 2 slowpokes in front. How the hell did he find his line through them?

  • Senna4ever

  • Look at how he exits the Bus Stop sliding...

  • Senna has become the vhehicle itself....

  • Please give us this car in Gran Turismo 5!!!!

  • @Ferrariman601 I think gran turismo 3 has it.

  • @jraybay Yeah, but they hid it. It's in a totally fictional livery and it doesn't at all have the handling characteristics of the real car. I want it like it appears here. GT5 PLEASE!!!!

  • @Ferrariman601 I just noticed you like a ferrari f1.... I am mclaren fan >_> you are greedy you now? you got ferrari f2007 in gt5 now you want a mclaren, it's just joke :P lol . well Yes thats correct. this would look a nice in gt5. maybe if the make the customs cars you can ask for this and they will make it

  • @Ferrariman601 F1-S-R is a great modding group. They recently came out with a League edition for 1991 and 1992 as well as a Historic version of 91. Also RSM just released a 90 mod. So 3 years of senna's cars right there. Plus theres also a 85 mod if you wanna drive Senna's Lotus and a 88 mod. So if these are the cars you're looking for try rFactor.

  • - simply the best -

  • Imagine exiting Eau Rouge and seeing two cars abreast in front of you.You would think it would be time to brake or ease off.

  • Senna qualifying in Phoenix 91, is the best I've ever seen on board camera.. It's scary how he cuised at a vicious high speed between crucial curves and cement barricades..

    It's Senna at his best.

  • The way he push the throttle on the curves to maintain the speed level, show how skilled he was.

  • simplemente el mejor.

  • this is the best spa video ever!!!

  • @diwant You're right!

  • wow very good sound of car! : ^D I fall aslep to this : D

  • just awesome!

  • Made up more than a second lead in the last sector!

  • Great example of Senna throttle technique at 0:43

  • this was when cars were real cars. Senna was the exponent of this era

  • I introduce you all Ayrton Senna !!!

    He´ll always be the best

We´re not talking about cars, but Senna...

Nobody will be like him ! R.I.P. Senna..

  • 1:19 to 1:22 is just insane!

  • @suprchrgr that BLAST through blanchamat was sick

  • No computer to help the driver with the throtle during those years !!

    Truly unbeliveable !

Todays even a young driver can be World champion with a "Playstation-Car"

  • I Cant understad how these cars could be so Quick,.. Ayrtons lap in 1991 was 1,47 and Michaels in 2002 wre 1,43 .. only 4 seconds??? And the track was the same till 2004 season,.. HOW??!!!!!

  • They had special qualifying tyres that lasted only one lap. At long tracks like Spa and Hockenheim it was already difficult to find the balance between warming the tyres on the outlap and saving their peak performance for the flying lap. Back in the pits the tyres were nothing else than expensive garbage.

And to make Senna's performance even bigger. Bus-Stop exit was faster in 2002

  • Those cars were running 3.5 liters egines with special fuels...Allowed bigger wings,,,active suspension and a few other things but they were still very hard to drive

  • special fuel is right. active suspension doesn´t matter in this case as Sennas car was a passive car. in 1991 it had also manual gearbox.

  • @sargatanas88 I am almost possitive that they had active suspension at this point but it was manual shift...lets look into it

  • the reason are qualifying tyres, used for the last time in 1991. they allowed a super performance for one single lap. for 1992 the FIA changed the qualifying rules, introducing a 12-lap-qualifying.

  • @andriusssska more horsepower

  • This a-video makes me-a-smile.....

  • Was great to fully hear Senna's renowned use of the throttle there, Awesome footage that is!

  • never get tired of watching this video

the blipping the throttle technique is so clearly demonstrated

  • McLaren and Senna at their respective peaks. IMHO

  • More than a second faster than 2nd placed driver Prost in his Ferrari. And 1.6 seconds faster than teammate Berger.

  • The best driver I have seen in my lifetime. Truly exceptional.

  • Ayrton Senna. The best racing car driver ever! He will always be remembered for his amazing natural ability, his car control was extraordinary at the limit. He was exciting to watch and gave the sport character it lacks today. The Senna/Prost era was the best we have seen in our lifetime.

  • Senna at his peak imo.. amazing lap.

  • its 1991

  • I am 100% sure this is 1991, that is the MP4/6.

It is very different to the the MP4/5B and it has a V12 which sounds very different to the V10 from 1990.

  • The manner in which he takes Eau Rouge flat out is just extraordinary. I believe this is 1990, not 1991.

  • 1991...in 1990..he had the number 27

  • If you want to get technical the body work on the car in 1991 was different, sidepod was higher..the car was fatter. not was wide. Nose cone was different..etc.

  • this is 1991, as said the car was fatter

the 1989-90 cars looks similar tho

  • once again...Senna had the number 27 in 1990....number 1 in 1991

  • Quem som fantastico dessa Maclaren !!!

    Lindo demaissssssssss ...

    " O Senna é incomparável,,,No limite sempre ...Que volta fantasticaaaa ...!

Da ate falta de ar ...

    Saudadessssss Eternasssssss !

  • Wow

    Love that sound

    miss u Ayrton

    RIP!!

    Que som lindo,

    saudades desses tempos!!!

    Vá com Deus, Ayrton!!

  • Senna forever

  • Taloco nesse som...pqp

    esse V12 é uma sinfonia

  • Meu Jesus...

  • At 0:45 you can clearly hear Senna's throttle control technique.

  • I was there (sat in the Eau Rouge grandstands) and OH (!!!) what a WONDERFUL week-end it was indeed! It didn't rain, which was a miracle, haha. But Senna stole the show! He was on pole AND won the race! What great memories! How blessed I am to have lived during his time and saw him racing live many times! RIP Ayrton! I miss you alot! Without you there, F1 just isn't the same anymore. While I know you wouldn't be racing, maybe you'd be a team owner and Bruno the star!

  • Ayrton Senna Simply The BEST Everytime !

    MADE IN BRAZIL !!!

  • Senna the quickest driver ever existed period!

  • Olha como ele voa na Eau Rouge!

  • Senna Fantastic

    Brasil!

  • Senna, simply magical.

  • There are no big differance at the end of the second sector but he did sometings at the last sector..:D beside he passed a car just before the busstop

  • Eau Rouge flat out!! This takes talent and balls!

Over 8 tenths of a second on last sector. We miss Ayrton.

  • And what's more incredible is that he went through a cloud of dust flat-out in Blanchimont and then overtook a slower car at the bus-stop and still took pole by over 1 second.

  • i thought the bus stop chicane is still there for F1

spa-francorchamps has been modified several times- it was originally 15 km (9.3 mi) long, then 14.1 km (8.7 mi) and now, it's 7 km (4.3 mi)

  • Que som desse motor, pqp. E que show de pilotagem.

What a great engine sound, the greatest one with the greatest pilot.

  • this time beat kimi raikkonen's 2008 pole time on the same track by 1/10 of a second

  • It's no exactly the same track. The last 2 corners were slower than today...the "bus stop". It shows how amazing Senna was.

  • Amazing!!!

  • Que pole sensacional !!!! No limite !!!!

    Esse é o Senna , o Maior de todos !!! Saudadesssssssssss

  • this is the man...a true f1 driver

  • it's like when Enzo said to Villeneuve "stop to destroying my cars"

    ^^

  • At 0:48's you can see Senna's car "dancing", but he was in perfect control about the car... brilliant!

    Great Senna!

  • At Spa with the mountain the music of the Honda V12 is simply fantastic .

Honda the only one motorist world champion of formula 1 with a 3.5 V12

  • That engine was in the most reliable car with the best driver at the time, that's why they won. On multiple occasions Senna said the Honda V12 was garbage and clearly voiced his concerns to McLaren.

  • Yes, i remenber the Silverstone 91 gp, he was not happy about his V12 !! Honda knew very well that the better architecture was the V10 for 3.5, the proof, they was the great master of the V10 3.5. But they wanted to show to the world that they can won with a V12 .....The HONDA genius .

  • He do the pole position in this lap...

  • yes...but we didn't know till the next day

  • Thats the way Eu Rouge should be taken balls out with sparks flying

  • The corner was different back then and was not flat out, so they had to lift of or gear down!

But yeah, the sparks looked so cool...not only at Eau Rouge! :-)

But it was seen as too big a hazard to have such a large part of the downforce to rely on suction, and so the stepped floor with the plank came in...and no more sparks!

A step up for safety...a step down for cool looks and show!

  • senna didnt even slow dont through the dust , thats serious balls

  • hehehehe

  • Listen to that Baby sing! thats how a race car is supposed to sound!

  • great!! and people still doubts if he is the best

  • Well there will always be doubt where theres no proof!

But I belive he was the best...without being certain!

Anyway that Honda V12 sound amazing!!!

All the vids that this Mclaren-Honda is in, you can hear it so clearly...it sounded NOTHING like the other engines!

I wish we could get a little les aerodependent cars, wide slicks, and I belive its also soon time for another engine type!

The 2.4 lacks tourque! I would almost rather see a supertuned dieselengine with no noise reduction!

  • The torque argument is pretty redundant as the current V8s produce their torque at much higher RPMs, therefore the teams run larger reduction gearing increasing the torque (and therefore thrust) at the wheels. In effect the current engines produce as much torque at the wheels as the 3.5 units.

  • I trust you when you say the 2.4 L engines have more maximum torque! Myself without having seen any data that it probably was about the same!

However when I wrote the first reply I was thinking more of the Torque-curve, or Torque characteristics or what ever its called in English. Sorry 

When they introduced the 2.4s they also to my knowledge banned such things as variable air intakes, which means that the engines peak at VERY narrow rev-range!

  • I cannot stop watching this lap. PERFECTION. Yes I agree it is the single most amazing lap I have even seen. Mclaren used to have 2 extra 18 wheeler. the fist one was to carry his ego, the second one to carry his balls.

  • A fried as me, how come everytime I see Senna driving, now one is is close to me

  • This should be rated as best lap ever

  • It didn't even sound like he lifted through Eau Rouge, that corner takes big brass balls to be taken flat! Plus the sound of that Honda V12 is orgasmic,on a par with the Ferraris.

  • Great to listen to those cars uninterrupted!

  • Senna The Rocket!!!!

  • Im speechless. Ayrton Senna had a god given talent. no doubt about it. also that engine sounds amazing! excuse my ignorance but is that a v10 or a v12?

  • it was a V12

  • cool. i knew that mclaren used honda v10's in 1989 & 1990. wasn't sure about 1991. thanks

  • what a lap!

  • Agreed

  • 160 MPH through Eau Rouge, two cars in my way, left, right. It was so fast, the camera miss it.

  • Love the comment about the driver going into the grass... its like he's just getting out of the way. haha

  • love the eau rouge corner of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit :D

  • Beautiful

  • MSN MSN MSN MSN xDxDxDxDxD

  • master's of spa, the engine spec is not the better.

  • in regard to FW13, you mean FW13B from 90? that car wasn't brilliant. it won Imola and Hungary, but than? in the last races situation got even worst. in Suzuka 90 there were a lot of ritirements, but Patrese and Boutsen achieved only P4 and P5, behind Benetton and Larrousse. In Australia same picture, P5 and P6, Boutsen 1.51 min retard and Patrese 1lap. they needed a revolution, and it came with Adrian Newey, formerly March.

  • Maybe I don't agree with you in regard to the FW13 in 1990, specially at the end of the season with the FW13B (which changed its "center of gravity" as I explained in the other post), it was in my view more a matter of power of the engine. When they got extra-power due to Elf developing a special fuel and oil, they did it quite good!. But I agree on Newey: he did an excellent job with the Layton-House. Remember when in 1990 they almost win to Alain after having sucked just a week ago!!!.

  • we don't need to have always the same view, no problem. Newey for me is a giant. do you remember Mexico 90 and the following race France 90? in Mexcio not qualified, in Le Castellet Capelli nearly won! the aerodynamic was sensational, and with a pragmatic partner like Patrick Head on his side, the performance was good on every circuit.

  • I remember very well Mexico 90 and France 90 (If I remember well, the French GP was in Paul Ricard, not Le Castellet). But I remember how Leyton-House March sucked and didn't even qualified, and some days after that sucking race, Capelli almost won!!!. Alain managed to overtake him by the end of the race, to be honest, I was sure Capelli was going to win!!!. I agree Newey is a talented designer and chief, no doubt.......

  • Paul Ricard = Le Castellet. The reason was Mexico is very bumpy, Paul Ricard like a billiard table, which has an enormous impact on aerodynamics. By the way, Capelli lost the lead only because his engine began to misfiring.

  • Capelli would have won that race if his engine wouldn't have lost power right before the end of the race

  • wow - over 1 sec. in those conditions - unbelievable!

Those were the days, but the satety was practicly non existant.

  • your right...those were the days :)

  • 0:38 and 01:32 great sounds! great driving! 5/5

  • the time was set a few minutes from the end of the session, previously interrupted by an accident.

i remember the italian television cutted the transmission just in the moment a great dust cloud came out in front of Senna. So i was afraid an accident could have happened. Internet did not exist. Only in the evening in got the information: Pole, and what a pole!

  • just amazing, he was really flying. there was traffic. still he was irresistible. in the last sector there is Modena on his way in the chicane. no problem! hard to believe.

  • Yeah, that lap is incredible!!!I absolutely agree sargatanas88 my friend;he destroyed them.He took advantage very well of his engine that day,an engine that was very suitable for that circuit, but if you watch the whole lap, you'll notice how committed Ayrton was in that lap,and it is also remarkable that looking at the way his car moves, there's no doubt Ayrton managed to set up his chassis extremely well;I focus on this since there are some noobs who disregard Ayrton as a tester, just bullshit!!!

  • glad to year from you, luciano. i must say he was able to bring the qualfiying tyres more to the limit than other drivers. McLaren MP 4/6 was not as efficient as Williams FW 14, but the qualifyers did cover some weak point. In the race Mansell was clearly quicker but ritired. You are right, Honda brought a new engine for that race with a lot more power. Senna was in good shape, McLaren-Honda-Shell were in good shape, the result ist that lap!

  • Hey sargatanas88,when you say "bring the qualifying tyres more...other drivers",that's EXACTLY the point.Agree 100%. But take a look on every movement of the car,and you'll notice it doesn't slide or something,it almost goes following a perfect line, something very difficult with cold tyres, only few drivers can handle a car in such a way.I have no doubt he set up his chassis perfectly that day, since McLaren MP4/6 was always inferior compared to FW13 and specially FW14.PERFECT!!!.Simply Ayrton!!!

  • well, i see a little side outside Rivage (O.47) and outside Bus Stop (1.41). You can notice he was really near the limit. In his career very rare times he made mistake in a qualifying lap. I remember only France91 and Monaco93. Other drivers frequently did stop their attempt while having a big slide. Why did you mention FW13? FW13 didn't run in 91...and FW 13 wasn't that good car, FW 14 was a revolution (thanks Adrian Newey!).

  • Of course you see a little bit outside, specially Bus Stop, but that was just Ayrton being fast: he always slides a little when was going to a raw speed lap. The important thing is he did it very well. Mansell used to slide sometimes very similar to Ayrton, but he wasn't as fast as Ayrton, it was just enjoying to see but useless for getting the best times. In regard to FW13 (before 91), it's maybe a kind of interpretation: I always believed FW13 was superior to McLaren and Ferrari....

  • Anyway, it's true that Mansell had problems that day, it would very hard for McLaren to get a pole without that, but it doesn't count for me, this time Mansell had problems, OK, this is motorsport is all about: drivers and CARS. The important thing for me is looking at the driving of Ayrton that day, with a good set up for the qualifying, and make his chassis go to almost an equal status with the Williams due to the way Ayrton always used to manage qualifying tyres!!!. As if they were warmed!!!
