Gelsey Kirkland's Giselle is better than this one, IMHO. Gravity seems to have no effect on her. She floats. And she seems more vulnerable and delicate. Kirkland *dances* her Giselle while most other Giselles are hitting each of the required elements.

So while Mezentseva is very good and her arms ungodly long, she's like Nancy Kerrigan compared to Oksana Baiul. I'll take Baiul.

I cannot say with is better, Fracci or Mezentseva, they both are very different, I believe Fracci's Giselle is more innocent and beautiful while Mezentseva's Giselle is more powerful and lively, so, more than "who is best" is "who you prefer". I like both.

She is certainly up there, one of the best, and most poetic Giselles I've ever seen. What total commitment and breathtaking technique. And...Terekhova is the Mirtha in this beautiful production - almost incredible to find two such great artists in the same performance.

Without any doubt whatsoever in my mind, Mezentseva"s Giselle is the finest that we have on film. She doesn't cheat and she never takes the easy way out in her dancing, especially in Act II. And, this 1983 Kirov performance is to this day (May 2009) the best available on film, everything considered. Yes, there are some good ones out there (Kirov, POB, Bolshoi, ABT), but overall this is still the best overall.

What really is good when you get to this stage? To nit pick a superior performance is futile. Each comes w their personal style and beauty. It is a matter of opinion and always how that artist touches you. She is beautiful and romantically lovely.

Spetztisova, Fracci, Makarova, Alonso, Chauvire, etc. By the way, no one ever mentions other brilliant Giselles Yvette Chauvire, one of the greatest Giselles of this century, Antoinette Sibley, and more.

I have the "Portrait" you mentioned. It is indeed brilliant. I posted Alonso, Markova, and Fracci performing the variation from the first act of Giselle. I've only seen Sibley in "The Turing Point".
