I used to like the Damned. then that whole nastiness with Rat Scabies happened. the stories went back and forth. Vanian's side of the story is fishy at best. Charismatic? shy? more like sleazy. Typical knob. I lost respect for these guys. they all pulled a Jello Biafra and tried to rip eachother off. In the end the whole punk rock ethos was proven a sham. It was always about the money.
In giving back, in trying, it's really something of an experiment. It can be terrifying because it might be unchartered territory, and probably is. We may make mistakes, as it's a new situation. But at least we're trying. Hell, I'm far from perfect, and know the people I admire have something I don't. I may have made mistakes - oh well. But they are trifles in comparison to what I have learned on that journey.
I find it severely interesting how many people out there say, "Wow, I love this band" and so on, but don't do much about it. It's not enough to buy the album. It's not enough to buy the poster. If we truly love something then we do "love in action" as someone once said. We write it, draw it, discuss it. Support the things that supported you. The Damned's music along with other great bands, artists, and people who have inspired me are great things about which to write. Give back.
Ahhh, Dave, can't wait to see your pretty face this tour. You're one of my 'f'ave heroes. Hugs and kisses from a damned disciple. Can you sing "Grimly Fiendish" this time? Captain, bug off!!!!
His moustache is great but his beard is even better-she's great on bass. What a talent, both in the damned and the village people. Thanks for last night Dave, even though you're faster than a speeding bullet. Maybe a little more toe sucking next time? -Bubba XOXOXO
actually, you've got to be dead to get press..the clash, ramones, nirvana, joy division, all in the mags, t,shirts and biographies, and even the odd film or documentary! so there you are dave, you'll have to do a 'reggie perrin' and cash in heh heh.
the damned have always been un-appreciated by snobby critics, which is a shame because they've brought some real diamonds out through the years, and they just keep getting better! its the same with most bands of that era, bauhaus got very little press following theyre stint a year or two ago, but joy division have had more press now than they ever had and he's bloody dead!
Patricia retired from The Damned due to giving birth to Dave Vanian's daughter. Patricia is Dave's wife. The current bassist is great, but I hope Patricia returns in a few years time.
Grew up to these boys banging their tunes out and blame them for all my own music going wrong (big smile). It wasnt that my tunes were asolutely shit or anything - honest!!
Great band and need to keep going so we can carry on enjoying their fantastic tunes.
thanks for puttin it on. never saw an interview with him. Human, not annoying or "famous". No is as eccentric as..well no word applies to anyone but the british.
Is all anyone can focus on is how young he looks? Big deal. He looks nice, so what, big deal, move on. Doesn't anyone have anything to say about the damned's music and talent, or is everyone being caught up in worshipping beauty and idols? Duh.
I have a couple observations regarding this interview. MANY people have reviewed their shows, including myself. I also don't understand why Dave Vanian is talking so much about Rat Scabies, he's not even in the band anymore. Why doesn't he focus on where the band is NOW and where they're headed? That's much more interesting to me. Dave Vanian's personae is still there, and I still have no idea who he is. He keeps his personal life sliced off like (the no longer standing) Berlin wall.
Always a nice guy and really humble. I've met him about five times and the first was when I was just a teeny bopper. He offered me some of his food and let us watch the soundcheck.
06:43, Dave is so right. put them sepparately and you see an idiot with a red cap, a count Dracula, some sloppy red haired guy and a couple of other guys heh whatever! lovely band, god bless them
lol i met him at the beautiful day festival. He was so nice to me. He gave me his autograph and i have got a pic of him, my dad, sister and me together
a top singer long live the damned,if they hadnt had such bad luck along the way they would have been a top top band but to me and many others they are.....f***ing mint
Quite often I come off as long-winded, & here's another ocassion! Thanks so much for posting this RARE interview with Dave! He and the band have been such an inspiration and it's great to see that he's doing so well! The pioneer of the goth/punk scene, in my opinion! N if you don't think he's still goth at heart, just ask Patricia! LONG LIVE THE DAMNED!!!
This guy was gonna be Glenn Danzigs replacement for The Misfits
TheGuinnessboys 2 months ago
@TheGuinnessboys That's actually fitting. Glenn wrote the Samhain song Archangel with intent on having Dave sing on it.

Nice to see Vanian wearing something other than a white shirt. I'm a major fan of Charles II BTW.
And this is the MOST OPEN AND LAID BACK I've ever seen the guy. And he looked bloody good at 49.

Vanian is such a charismatic fella. He's in much better shape than most of his contemporaries. And he's still relevant too.
