@VaidasZx First of all, you have to observe what is the martial art that fits your phisical condition: are you quick try muay thay or karate. Are you flexible? try cappoeira or taekwondo. Are you strong? try graplings (judo, wrestling etc.) or kick boxing. You have to know yourself to pick the art that will suit you.

Next, remember that every martial art is focused on personal defense, so it doesnt matter your stile, if you train correctly you will know defense yourself, you make the art.

I did Judo when I was a kid...all because I was bullied at school. That was my main aim. Then like you say it became fun and was a bonus learning Judo week after week enjoying myself but also being able to defend myself. I had to give it up three yrs later due to a severe head injury.

But I will attempt to do it again when need be if I need to defend myself-I still know the throws/techniques.

I just hope to God that my reactions will be quick enough to get the better of them!

I want to start training judo. I train Krav Maga and MMA. I want to teach self defence after a while. And i think judo is excellent for selfdefence. It's very realistic because of clothing etc. In real life you can always grab after the persons jacket etc.

@mitchx69 Don't waste your time learning Judo, Wrestling and BJJ at the same time. You will get exhausted if you do all 3 at the same time. Start with Judo & master it before moving on to the next art or simply just find yourself a good Sambo instructor. All good Russian Sambo instructors that have an official Master of Sports rank from Russia are also black belts in Judo. Sambo utilizes everything from Judo, Freestyle & Greco wrestling, in addition, Sambo's ground game is better than Judo's.

Every Sport Sambo player practices chokes because they all cross-compete in Judo & Combat Sambo. So even though in Sport Sambo competition you can't use chokes, you still learn them and utilize them in freestyle & combat ... and judo.

To execute uchi-mata you must now turn your head/shoulders so that it isn't pointed directly down at the mat. This tends to take your opponent over the side rather than over the top. This is a more traditional version of the through and less likely to lead to injury. Twenty years ago people used to purposely hit their head on the ground to do a kind of cartwheel and land with great force on their opponent. This is now a disqualification.

Yep, from a BMX background though, we learn how to fall first, and I'm not kidding either. Anyone I've taught basics too I've always explained the exit strat for a trick because a crash is bad news. But I'm glad that Judo was what helped you avoid injury =)

Almost every street fight I've been in SOMEONE has ended up on the ground, but 90% of fights ending up on the ground is an exaggerated myth that's just not true.

@Kami5909 We have a boxer in our Medieval Martial Arts group. He weighs around 95kg and myself about 80kg and he is even taller. But when it comes to wrestling I have such an advantage that is is rare if he wins. Boxer have the problem that do not have the needed stance when they directly engage the force of the opponent. As a Judoka and Karateka I can say: it is much easier to block or eat a blow but it is almost impossible to prevent a trained Martial Artist to close in and grapple.
