This whole idea, not just this video, but survival based training for folks who aren't as fortunate as us who were raised that way is a genius idea. It applies to so many scenarios including an economic crash, or war of some sort, and both don't seem to far fetched at this point. Keep em coming fellas.
I understand what you're saying at the beginning of this video. Basically you're saying that if you lived in an area like Oregon or the Northwest versus say an area like Texas where there are less natural resources such good water supply, great availability of game and various plants you would have a better chance at survivabilty.
Kit is 100% trustworthy. I'm real interested in the diamond sharpening stick. The extra saw is awesome! Iodine is a must. Would a small container of bleach be useful? Just asking...
@robcas631 I'm not Dave but bleach has a shelf life that is quite shorter than that of iodine tabs and require careful packing and padding; 1 drop can render ur entire pack/pouch/pocket STINKY for quite some time and can actually damage some materials.
@seekertrth I don't know if our RX stores sell Iodine OTC. I thought it was freaking weird. I asked the Parmacist what the problem was he never answered my question. So, I don't know if it's to stop terrorists or crack heads?
@robcas631 Go to an outdoor store; water purification tablets are iodine tabs. There is 1 brand that has 2 bottles; 1 for the purification, the other to help w/ the taste of the 1st 1. I prefer my Hiker purifier pump, I couple that w/ a Universal carbon filter for the chemicals found in most water sources these days.
I do keep some tabs in a belt pouch as an EDC, they r good for 5 yrs, unopened, 6 mnths after opening.
@robcas631 O, I wanted to say that the tinctiture of iodine takes the same packing conderations as bleach as it is usually sold in glass vials and it requires some additional care for use, sorry I didn't include that in my 1st reponse (senior moment, lol).
@seekertrth Man, I love the book. It's straightforward and a pleasure to read. I have been telling my friends what a treasure it is! Dave is a wealth of knowledge! Carry on brother!
it's alright but I found an item caled a slipstone (angled on 1 side/ saws, etc, rounded /serrations, etc, flatside for reg. use); LOVE it! It's the same size as a field stone so it slips right in the pocket. O, the come in 2 types; hard + soft, one is for rough work, the other for fine. I got mine @ a woodworking store, ask @ the counter which is which, I forgot (early old age, lol)
The only down side is that it needs a lube, spit in a pinch but I use an old nasal sprayer (cleaned out really, REALLY good) to keeep a bit of oil in. ForU will need some anyway if u have a multi-tool or anything w/ a hinge (saw). I use mineral oil in mine b/c if I need to use it on my knife, then cut food, no poisenous petroleum or other chemicals, mineral oil will pass no prob.
@seekertrth Eye glass cleaner bottles are good too. Before oil was available steam engines were lubricated with something they called tallow. Basically boiled down pigs/ hogs fat. Just an FYI .
@robcas631 Yeah, didn't think about the eye glass cleaner bottles (should have, wear glasses). Also,I really appreciate u giving the tip about tallow but I was already aware of it. I would use that ONLY in an extreme situation (removed from civilzation for an extended time, can be made from virtually any fat). Reason being is that the tallow was used but the downside is that it can go rancid, it was worn off the moving parts in the engine so fast it wasn't a concern there.
@seekertrth They are strong and can be used for many other things. Add clean water and you can wash your eyes out. I imagine steam engines back in the day must have smelled like one big porl chop? lol
I like that philosophy you had for the container/mess kit. That is why I came up with my idea for the canteen mess kit video. To be able to have a compact yet versatile kit to use for multiple containers.

@ConstrictorsINC try bass pro shop or most gun shops carry them. I also noticed they come with different draw weights I bought two slingshots one with a blue band & a crossman with a yellow band the yellow band had a stronger draw weight.

@survival919 He's actually got a lot of videos on the setups he uses for starting fires. If you go to the channel and go to the playlist section he's got them all bundled together. HTH! :)
I would like to see you and Cody each take your own 10 piece kit be droped on the North Plate river at dusk split up at day brake stay 2-3 yards from each other on the oppsite sides of the river, and do you own thing so we could see how you 2 will be diffrent or not so dif in the fall no tents, tarps ok and no hammocks. for a week. I like to see it more like your makeing or own primative camp site and you have a week an at the end of the week both talk and share what they did .
Another terrific educational video from Dave! He is always so pumped up when he is talking, you can;t help but pay attention and get all stoked about going out and practicing your bushcraft/survival skills!!!
Very inspirational, knowledgeable, and legit!! Puts a lot of the other survivalists on youtube to shame!
@mean71cuda Well they don't spend their lives in the wilderness. Most of their meals are pretty normal i would imagine, and the times they do spend in the wilderness is good exercise.
speaking of containers. dumb question, the metal water bottles you see at walmart with the O ring on the cap, cant they be used to heat water to disinfect water?
@zac030101 Look at his vid series I believe called "The common mans survival kit". In one of them he adds a metal water bottle like those you can get at walmart. He even goes into how to put a darkened finnish on the bottle that is fire proof If I recall corectly. Its an older vid, about 2 years old.
@zac030101 For the common mans kit that he puts together, in the vids it shows him shopping army navy surplus, the dollar store, walmart, and a good will. Just take a look at what he has in this vid, and then think of where you could get such things for your own kit on the cheap. For example... my mother orders a coffee that comes in a metal can wtih pop top plastic lid. They make great pots, and I put other items in them to make a kit that I give as gifts. Think "improvise".
@D33Lux For my can stoves, I tend to use soup cans because they are smaller. A bunson burner is what they were called when I was in scouting. Roll up card board as tight as you can and push down into the soup can. Then poor in new or recycled candle wax. They work great and give off a surpriseing amount of heat and they are always ready for when you need them. And done correctly, its a survival item that can litteraly cost you nothing.
@zac030101 Yeah, make sure it's not aluminum. Some are lined with some kind of germ killer, that's not good either. I think some are built like a thermos as well(a bottle within a bottle) don't use that either.
What you want is a straight stainless steel bottle.
@sdkkrew all I did was comment on his taco video.. said it wasn't a taco if you put beans in it.. add beans and its a burrito so yankeeprepper cursed me out and banned me from his channel without being able to retort. thank God for real survivalist like @wildernessoutfitters is all I gotta say.
@chopski007 A burrito doesn't have anything to do with what's in it at all. A burrito is simply food wrapped up in a tortilla. A taco can have beans, or rice, just like it can have lettuce, and tomato. A taco is a shell that is folded, and filled with food. It can be fried(hard), or grilled, or just heated up till warm.
@ATFMILITIA I feel ya! We went almost 8 months without rain here (El Paso, Tx/Juarez, Mexico area) this passed year.
Man i wish it would rain where i live it goes right around the valley i live in here in wyoming LOL! so i get to watch it hit both sides just not where im at HAHA! But another Great video Brotha!
Man i wish it would rain where i live it goes right around the valley i live in here in wyoming LOL! so i get to watch it hit both sides just not where im at HAHA! But another Great video Botha!
Dave, when the economy collapses and there's 10,000 people like yourself in the local woodlands there will be NO game nor edible plants. People will need to depend on food storage, or the growing of corps they can protect from the starving masses, for the first 24 months. Lets talk about the common mans food storage, and I don't mean 600 pounds of bleached white flour, beans and rice.
That MSR Seagull is a great pot. Versatile and affordable. Heavier and bulkier than many aluminum or titanium alternatives, but still quite packable and an overall good choice for a cooking container.
Dave, any thoughts on quality sandpaper in a tight roll (silicon carbide on a water proof backing) instead of the rod?
The sandpaper can be unrolled and used to shape bone, teeth and wood into tools, polish the knife flats to remove rust, work garbage metals (lids) into cutting tools, and can also be used to grind down calluses, nails, etc. .
It can also be rinsed of debris and used many times over and just gets finer ability to polish with use (again use SiC which fracture wears).
hey dave im big fan of you! Greetings from brazil!! Im seeing you and Cody on Discovery channel... Do you wanna hear your voice in portuguese? I can sent a video! Stay well
Sweet video. Very informative. You should travel out to Arizona and make a few videos with Cody. Can't wait to see the Next season of Dual Survival, easily the best survival T.V. show out there. Man vs Wild is to fast paced to get clear information on how to do things.

I would like to see you and Cody each take your own 10 piece kit be droped on the North Plate river at dusk split up at day brake stay 2-3 yards from each other on the oppsite sides of the river, and do you own thing so we could see how you 2 will be diffrent or not so dif in the fall no tents, tarps ok and no hammocks. for a week. I like to see it more like your makeing or own primative camp site and you have a week an at the end of the week both talk and share what they did .

mean71cuda 7 months ago
@mean71cuda I know that's a joke haha??
foroke1 7 months ago
@mean71cuda Well they don't spend their lives in the wilderness. Most of their meals are pretty normal i would imagine, and the times they do spend in the wilderness is good exercise.

speaking of containers. dumb question, the metal water bottles you see at walmart with the O ring on the cap, cant they be used to heat water to disinfect water?
zac030101 7 months ago
@zac030101 Look at his vid series I believe called "The common mans survival kit". In one of them he adds a metal water bottle like those you can get at walmart. He even goes into how to put a darkened finnish on the bottle that is fire proof If I recall corectly. Its an older vid, about 2 years old.
Kellett781 7 months ago
@Kellett781 ive seen that vid, but he doesnt say where he got it? looking to get some and dont know where to go
zac030101 7 months ago
@zac030101 For the common mans kit that he puts together, in the vids it shows him shopping army navy surplus, the dollar store, walmart, and a good will. Just take a look at what he has in this vid, and then think of where you could get such things for your own kit on the cheap. For example... my mother orders a coffee that comes in a metal can wtih pop top plastic lid. They make great pots, and I put other items in them to make a kit that I give as gifts. Think "improvise".
Kellett781 7 months ago
@Kellett781 ive been useing a coffie can to hold some gear and i agree they make great emergencey pots
MrColoradosurvival 7 months ago
@Kellett781 great points, I've made a small wood stove out of one of those metal coffee cans nothing great, but as you mentioned "improvise".
Keep the great vids coming Dave!
D33Lux 7 months ago
@D33Lux For my can stoves, I tend to use soup cans because they are smaller. A bunson burner is what they were called when I was in scouting. Roll up card board as tight as you can and push down into the soup can. Then poor in new or recycled candle wax. They work great and give off a surpriseing amount of heat and they are always ready for when you need them. And done correctly, its a survival item that can litteraly cost you nothing.
Kellett781 7 months ago
@zac030101 Yeah, make sure it's not aluminum. Some are lined with some kind of germ killer, that's not good either. I think some are built like a thermos as well(a bottle within a bottle) don't use that either.
What you want is a straight stainless steel bottle.

@sdkkrew all I did was comment on his taco video.. said it wasn't a taco if you put beans in it.. add beans and its a burrito so yankeeprepper cursed me out and banned me from his channel without being able to retort. thank God for real survivalist like @wildernessoutfitters is all I gotta say.
chopski007 7 months ago
@chopski007 A burrito doesn't have anything to do with what's in it at all. A burrito is simply food wrapped up in a tortilla. A taco can have beans, or rice, just like it can have lettuce, and tomato. A taco is a shell that is folded, and filled with food. It can be fried(hard), or grilled, or just heated up till warm.
@ATFMILITIA I feel ya! We went almost 8 months without rain here (El Paso, Tx/Juarez, Mexico area) this passed year.
@wildernessoutfitters Well done, as always!!!
