One of the most amazing things is that Hammill goes from this band sound to pioneering recording it yourself in his front room on his next two or three solo albums.
@ksjoyjespeace Certainly Lydon was into VDGG and of course Hammill invented Rikki Nadir around 75, but like most good art VDGG music is difficult and complicated and quite demanding. The link to punk might be found in the intensity and anger that pours out of Hammill and the fact that he explored darker areas of the human psyche rather than doing the whole Tolkien thing.
I just found it; It's a Watkins Custom Copycat, a tape-loop echo machine designed circa 1958 by Watkins Electric Music. I don't know if what he's doing is what the makers intended, though!
I'm glad to have this, but it's by far the most intrusive concert camera work I've ever seen. At least the Pop Deux cameraman who shot Can stayed well back on the stage, possibly because he was freaked right the hell out.
By the way, does anyone know what the hell Hugh is doing to that poor Hammond from 4:35 - 4:40? I can see the name on that box is "Watkins," but I haven't been able yet to figure out what it is.
@jackal59 It's a Watkins tape echo and what he does is bending the tensionarm of the tapeloop thus causing the tape speed to alter. This results in the sound of the echo being played back at a slightly lower pitch for a brief moment and can often be used to cause great effects. You can clearly hear that effect just before the camera guy points to Hughs hand (when Guy is being filmed for a brief second).
AFAIK, Hugh just used valve heads and overloaded them to get distortion effects. Modulation (in this case basic flanging) was only from manipulating the copycat like he does in the solo. The other 2 boxes are EQ units.
But it sounds like somebody tried to digitally mess with the sound on this. It seems to have been run through some type of digital noise reduction which contributes greatly to the sound gating in and out. ;-(

@ksjoyjespeace I think Punk also owes a lot to The Velvet Underground, and Captain Beefheart.

Man, this is rare! Sweetest clip I have seen of them in this era. Jackson is incredible as usual. Hammill is lost in the moment. Banton is awesome.

@jackal59 that box is the Wem wtkins copycat tape echo

This above all other VdGG videos captures the visceral thrill of these four going at it with total commitment - fabulous!

This looks to be from the same TV show as "Lost".
Thanks for posting.

Awesome find.
Though I'm sure at 2:30 the audience must have yelling at the camera guy to "Get the FUCK out of the way!"
