a great talk from a person that was able to make lemonade from lemons. I'm sure we all have friends/acquaintances that could use this video to help them realize that no matter how dark today might be, tomorrow is a new day with a clean slate to write down new opportunities.
in the rush of life, I have taken many of the "smaller perks" of life for granted and this video has made me think about all the daily awesome things that have put a smile on me during even the most stressing moments.

@kinsmed I wouldn't call it sadness. I think he still has grief from his past, and he's still in the process of "moving on". He seemed to have the most difficulty and be the least eloquent ("really, really", "really, really") when he was talking about his personal struggles.
@kinsmed yes it seems to me too. first I got to know him by his blog, I did not imagine he would be so sad in the inside. but human life cannot be always joyful, after all life is the balance of goo and bad.
What great BS. Ok starving children, let's change your Attitude towards starving to death, that's you problem. And let's raise your Awareness towards a big juicy steak with everything on the side that you will never get to see, so you'll just have to imagine it. As far as the Authenticity, try to make your empty stomach sound different from the other children so you'll be you, unique. Utter BULLSHIT
I agree. Sure, people have problems like the ones he described. It's sad. But if people looked at the bigger picture they'd realise how lucky they are compared with most of humanity.
Great - someone who's feeling a bit down can walk past a bakery, but what does that do for people who need help the most? Who have a much better reason to be depressed? If anything it gives the false impression to someone walking past a bakery that everything is fine with the world. And it f*****g well isn't.
@a2dli Its ALL about the attitude. There isn't a single problem until you convince yourself that it's a problem. If you think life sucks, then it does, because that's how you choose to view it.
@MomoTheBellyDancer how can you ever objectively define a life that 'sucks'? you can't, because your definition is based on subjective experiences. a gun may have killed your father, but it saved mine... GUNS ARE GOOD!
Is this one of those talks that gets comments like "wow, has TED lost everything that made them TED?" Does it have something to please the elitist TED watcher?
One of the BEST talks I've seen from TED. Beyond inspirational.
I've seen a few people in the comments below exclaim that this was "boring".
Maybe you're too young to have experienced any real adversity yet.
Or maybe you simply lack the attention span to listen for a lengthy period of time.
Either way - you've missed out on a real gem of a speech and one day when life catches up with you... you'll be searching for the very things that made this video and talk... possible.
.....the title of this video was dubious at best. I wasn't expecting much out of this clip....but I was very pleasantly surprised. What a wonderful piece!
One of the nicest videos i've ever seen. Thanks for sharing those choicest thoughts. If each and every person thought in this direction then this world would be a nice place to dwell. Thanks once again.
@bentothetenthpower - Oh I see what you mean and tend to agree. TEDmen would have been ridiculous too. I personally don't care much if these presentations are by men or women. take care.
I can't believe some people missed the point of this video. His 1000 list of Awesome things... is not a be all and end all, type of list. its a list of things that HE thinks is awesome, not a list of things that IS awesome. =/ In his eyes it's great, not everyone will agree. Gah... people really need to educate themselves more these days. The internet is making everyone dumber. T_T
Wow... when he mentioned the three A's... I was amazed. I don't want to toot my own horn, but I'm 22 and I like to see the world through a child's eyes, choose my attitude and be authentic in what i do... =) feels great! I'm grateful that he's able to share this wonderful perspective on life. thankyou ted.
@johnnysamoa1 Mmmm I don't think being "Aware" - is something ppl are, well...aware of sometimes. To see the world for the first time, is to appreciate things to it's fullest degree. Even if it IS common sense, the way he delivered the message made all the difference. =)
@johnnysamoa1 Mmmm I don't think being "Aware" - is something ppl are, well...aware of sometimes. To see the world for the first time, is to appreciate things to it's fullest degree. Even if it IS common sense, the way he delivered the message made all the difference. =)
This is not a good way to view life. Having awareness includes being aware of the famines and despair overseas, while it's all good to focus on the good things to be happy, we shouldn't ever feel happiness knowing we aren't doing anything to help overseas. Not as much as we are capable of doing. We must deal with the negative things first to truly enjoy the positives.
@brod2man "We shouldn't feel happiness"? As in, you're saying we don't deserve to be happy because bag things are going on elsewhere? But as we're trying to help... we also need to keep our own spirits up don't we? When he says to be aware, I'm sure he also means to be aware of the negative things... but i spose ppl do take the things they see on an everyday basis for granted... and that's a shame...
@Crazee108 as long as people don't go from appreciating to worshiping the immediate world around them, which i fear is why people lose sight of the bigger world picture. Appreciation turns into materialistic perception. And that's the reason for the problems in the world.
It's because of videos like this that i subscribed @TEDtalksDirector channel, there is so much you can learn watching them, this guy is just another great example of that.
And about the lows of life, theres this phrase i once saw somewere but unfortunatly i cant remember were or who wrote it but it just glued to my mind wich is:
Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
And to @jiopjiop and anyone else who wants to see another great video from TEDtalksDirector check the main video in my channel
I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but these three things do not do anything. I have been alone for a while, and have tried to be happy, aware, and authentic. I know what it feels like to be down, and I know that your instincts when feeling really down are to hope to die, or try hard to change things. This guy has probably felt a lot of pain, but that pain doesn't go away by doing what he says. It is a positive choice, but it doesn't fix anything. It does sell books though...
@idiallin He didn't set out to sell books. He just posted a blog. I think people find in him an excuse to look on the bright side of things. That's what's selling his book.
@iviewthetube Oh god I am so sorry! I didn't mean to call YOU immature... someone else made a stupid comment about pedobear and it made me angry... hahahaha... yea I'll be sure to check out Sagan's talk. Thanks. =)
Live a life awesome for me, Yes! Why spend my money on sponsoring children or taking care of my parents. I'd spend all my money on me, spend time with the select few that I like and being happy enjoying the BEST this world has to offer. Cars, drugs, sex, holidays - with great attitude, awareness and authenticity. Awesome life!
Most of the hard times or situations he referred to were personal, and most of the remedies and the three As were all about solving those personal difficulties. Fine. But sometimes we need to put the happiness of others before our own.
The one thing he didn't mention is appreciating how lucky we are compared to the majority of the Earth's population, and how we should be trying to address that balance. I think he needs another 'A', and it needs to be a synonym of the word 'selflessness'.
@rulesandwisdom I'm not so sure we should be selfless. Someone still loses. Why should it be me? I think instead, we should realize that we are stronger the stronger we make the people around us. If selfishness is self interest, then true selfishness should lead to strengthening the people around you, because then you yourself are better off. What most people call selfish is just short sighted stupidity. There is no conflict between self-interest and goodness. They are the same thing.
This made me cry. And to the pessimists who think this is dumb...it's not. It's true. Think about it: Don't you walk by bakeries? Don't you get rain in your hair? Don't you put on clothes fresh from the dryer and think "ahhhh"? I mean these rhetorically, because not everyone lives near a bakery, but really. Aren't there little things that you can enjoy?
This is calssic individualist Amercianism - let's take the ONE guy who succeeded against the odds, as opposed to all the nameless millions who continue to try and fail, and make him give a speech on 'following your heart.' Then let him convince the audience everyone can be like him. But the fact is they can't. He is a lotto winner. And now he's telling you, if you really cared enough, you could win the lotto too. But you won't.
@sam00011000 Well hes more talking about individual happiness I think you kinda missed his point. =/ he's saying not to take the simple things in your OWN life for granted. Sure there are negative things in THE WORLD, but in regards to your own life, smile when you see a rainbow, no harm is done and you're made a little bit happier. he was just telling his story - things that makes HIM happy, in the hopes that others may adopt it and make it their own, not just blindly follow and agree w/ it.
@310sucks I thought he was claiming that if you really cared you wouldn't need to win the lotto, because enjoyment in life is about wanting what you have, not getting what you want. Cliche. But it's a good cliche.
i cant stand these kind of superficials talk which doesnt really help anyone and can cause confusion in people who is having bad times. "OH, is not about understanding things and face the problems but remember the small things...thanks so much for this great advice". It reminds me the video "smile or die" of Barbara Ehrenreich
Das ist zwar einfache Lebensphilosophie, aber trotzdem gut, weil er authentisch ist und die alte Weisheit "Nutze den Tag!" (Carpe diem) auf eine sehr persönliche Art präsentiert. Ein toller Vortrag!
Although it is a simple philosophy of life, it is still good because he is authentic and he presents the old saying "Seize the day!" (Carpe Diem) in a very personal way. A great lecture!
I don't think he's talking about "forcing" smiles. I think he's talking about looking for opportunities to smile, and then taking them. Negative things won't just blow away, it's true, but neither will positive things. We are constantly surrounded by horrible things, and we're constantly surrounded by beautiful, life-changing things. It's hard, no doubt, to ignore the negative things when they scream at you, but the beautiful things are still there, ready to give you joy, if you'll let them.
@chashathaway I agree with what your concept is however what hes also pointing out is attitude.. If your faced with a problem or negative things, then your attitude has to be positive over it, where you solve this problem or face the fact that that horrible "thing" is true and get on with your life. When you say we also have positive things, attitude plays a role there to. He is basically trying to say to us to appreciate more. Appreciate the simple things in life with a passion.
This was very inspirational...but easier said than done. I don't mean to sound pessimistic but when you're faced with difficulties for a prolonged period of time, you can force a smile and force yourself to be aware and force your focus on positivity but sooner or later, you're going to fall right back where you started. Admit it, you know it's the truth.
Awesome

@TowkayBandrek Shame on you. Are you shallow, stupid or evil? How can you be so unfeeling?

I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but these three things do not do anything. I have been alone for a while, and have tried to be happy, aware, and authentic. I know what it feels like to be down, and I know that your instincts when feeling really down are to hope to die, or try hard to change things. This guy has probably felt a lot of pain, but that pain doesn't go away by doing what he says. It is a positive choice, but it doesn't fix anything. It does sell books though...
idiallin 1 year ago
@idiallin He didn't set out to sell books. He just posted a blog. I think people find in him an excuse to look on the bright side of things. That's what's selling his book.

Hey Crazee, don't be crazy!
Did you notice how part of Niel's talk was similar to Carl Sagan's video Pale Blue Dot?
I think it is an excellent message worth repeating.
This was a great talk.

Awesome life!
jamestrekky 1 year ago
@jamestrekky Um....really?
May I assume you spend your money on sponsoring children and/or taking care of your parents?
If not, then you're doing a bit a of glass-house-throw-stones thingy.
If yes, are you bitter about it, or do you derive joy from the awareness that your authentic giving helps people?
If you're bitter, then maybe you should shove it.
If your're happy then, maybe you have an awesome life, and you only need to change your attitude toward others trying to find theirs.
t3tsuyaguy1 1 year ago
@t3tsuyaguy1 so you agree with me. what's your point??
jamestrekky 1 year ago
Most of the hard times or situations he referred to were personal, and most of the remedies and the three As were all about solving those personal difficulties. Fine. But sometimes we need to put the happiness of others before our own.
The one thing he didn't mention is appreciating how lucky we are compared to the majority of the Earth's population, and how we should be trying to address that balance. I think he needs another 'A', and it needs to be a synonym of the word 'selflessness'.
rulesandwisdom 1 year ago

@Kanella2009 - If you think it's not good enough, it won't be. The first A is "attitude," isn't it?
seraphinapandora 1 year ago

Crazee108 1 year ago
@310sucks well in regards to the lotto - you gotta be in it to win it right? so why not give it a try?
Crazee108 1 year ago

Parmenides111 1 year ago
I don't think he's talking about "forcing" smiles. I think he's talking about looking for opportunities to smile, and then taking them. Negative things won't just blow away, it's true, but neither will positive things. We are constantly surrounded by horrible things, and we're constantly surrounded by beautiful, life-changing things. It's hard, no doubt, to ignore the negative things when they scream at you, but the beautiful things are still there, ready to give you joy, if you'll let them.
chashathaway 1 year ago 36
