@ir10031981 That's why it worked so well! In wrestling, you need to have a good guy talking up the faces and a bad guy talking up the heels. They played off of each other so well because of this. It also made for entertaining television seeing them argue and bicker all of the time. If people agree all the time aka two faces/two heels it wouldn't be half as fun!
i loved the fact that gorilla mentioned that ted dibiase was making his RETURN to the WWF.. most commentators would have dismissed that and introduced him as a new character.
Gorilla knew how to sell angles. He did a good job of putting over Mr. T. When it comes to putting people over, Monsoon, Heenan, McMahon, Ventura and Hayes were the best at it, and before anybody gets on me about Hayes, listen to his commentary during those MSG shows. Lord Alfred Hayes knew how to put a match over, ESPECIALLY when it came to undercard matches. Lord Alfred Hayes was a very, very underrated commentator in the 80s.
"He goes out there with 600 lbs. of cheap gold jewelry on that's probably made of tin playing with a shock absorber and that supposed to intimadate everybody."
What i don't understand is that the same people that grew up watching WWF, all of a sudden don't want their kids to watch it hence the PG era. Okay if you grew up watching this and turn out all right why can't your kids watch it. That's why i love watching TNA because they haven't forgotten what wrestling is really about. PURE UNADULTERATED ENTERTAINMENT. I said my peace. PEACE.
@BIGDLM1 That's why he had the Million Dollar Belt. Only he was good enough to have his own custom made championship belt. One day, I'm gonna be rich enough to buy that belt. Everyone has their price...even the million dollar man. Sooner or later, I want his million dollar belt
Oh, what a nice white suit on Jake. I never have seen him in something like that. Danny Davies was a great character. Maybe not as wrestling, but for entertainment. If I have to choice by him and the Bushwhackers (Brrr) I choice him anytime. And Gorilla, Heenan and Ted Dibiase, their all great! Mr T is…eh…Mr T. He can do something in front of a camera, but he’s not a wrestler.
Virgil did not get that pusch that he deserved, though.
I've always heard that Damian was a animatronic. When I was a kid, I loved Jake the Snake and thought the snake was real, but I read a while back that it was fake.
The shit they're doing now is awful. I love the classic 80's/90's stuff. Wrestling was golden up until Wrestlemania 13. That's when they jumped the shark.
Prime Time Wrestling was so great. Then, Vince saw the ratings and decided he should be on it. That's when it started to suck. It still had it's moments. Like when Mr Perfect turned face. But it wasn't the same as when it was just Gorilla and Bobby
Oh my goodness. I have just realized by seeing this that I was actually in that restaurant. I was supposed to be the 3rd next table served. You can actually see me on the right. I had forgotten all about this until now. I was very angry at DiBiase at the time.
@rodneystiffington Actually, DiBiase was returning. He was in the WWF in the late 1970s. He was Hulk Hogan's opponent for his first match at Madison Square Garden.
I have always favoured Heels over Faces in Wrestling, even Antagonists in Cartoons, Films and Video Games. And i think Ted Dibiase was the one who started all that. He was just such a great heel.
At the 4:49 mark, it looks like Dibiase was near downtown Dallas because of Reunion Tower in the background. WOW! The scenery looks nothing like that now. Much more modernized and different freeway design. Dallas has changed A LOT since 1987.
I totally agree... Lawler was ok when he was a pure heel in the 90's... but JR is the most overrated commentator who has no real idea of what makes a star (esp since he never stepped in a ring at all)... like that annoying nerd on the sidelines thinking he knows more than the real legends.
Danny Davis's comment to Mr. T about chopping down trees was priceless. T, around this time, bought some nice property and, for some reason, butchered all the trees on it. I'm surprised T let them make fun of it.
