I love the Skjold-Class.

A week ago there was a military training excercise in my city and 1 skjold class and 3 smaller military boats was docked and i saw the skjold class undock and move away from the city.

It went at normal speed until it came a bit away from the cuty and then it was like the speed went to 10000000000 kms :P It was so fast for the size of the boat. It was so awesome :D

@kyXst: Both Visby and Skjold is awsome boats, to say that Skjold is better is not correct. It is two different types of boats. Skjold cant fill the role of the Visby, as Visby can be fitted with hellicopters. The Visby is a Corvette. Sweden dont have frigs, cus they dont need to. However, the Skjold class would be too small. The Visby class is just what Sweden needs.

Those vessels have the speed of a torpedo-boat and the fire power of a small cruiser! I was in the army but I have a friend who were placed on one of those in Karlskrona, Sweden! But if you wanna see an amazing vessel search for "Stridsbåt 90", those small Swedish vessels are just amazing!

The main arment is 8 navy strike missils. Best anti ship missils at this date made by Kongsberg aerospace. It has som sting anti-air arment. 57mm canon is all what you need today as the battle crusers of the past have seen theyre days. And lighter armored frigates have taken theyre place.

The structure of this ship is actualy much stronger than the steel construction of modern frigates.

@MrJeffreydunson - It has also great sea capabileties and have sailed from Norway across the north atlantic to USA without anny diffculties. It goes 60knots in calm seas and easily 30 in heavy seas.

The first one built has bin used as an test vessel for some years now, The 6 ships in total are soon finished and are yet to be put into action. The only Norwegian ship in action right now exept the coust guard is a frigate down outside somalia hunting pirats.

And bigger and better the radar and weapons are. This ship is very awesome to what it those. Patrolling and small waters in the Norwegians fjords. But on open water versus a modern battle ship, this little fella would not have a chance.

The litle fella as you call it goes 60knots, and armed with 8 navy strike missils and hard to detect and see with great seacapabilities. And a stronger structure and protection than a frigate.

It's a brown water defense vessel. It's meant to be stealthy, highly mobile and small enough to hide close to our many islands and in fjords, all along our lengthy coast. Combined with smaller and land based defenses, you'd be a retarded admiral to take your navy into our close waters.

If you combine the Skjold class with a sea to air defense system as well (don't think they have at the present), you'll have one of the most potent coastal defenses in the world.

we`ve only ordered 6 of the exact type that Skjold is (same weapons, cupholders and whatnot), but during the next 10-12 years we'll upgrade our army by replacing old ships with ships that are built the same way as the Skjold's. eventually we'll have just composite-ships like this Skjold, though varying amounts of firepower and size on each.
