RIP Dion! And God Bless your family! Your Dad must feel awful, but how would he know the outcome? :-( I am sending this to my Nephew who is just learning to drive. Hugs from Manhattan, Jeanne
R.I.P. may dion be up there in heaven with jesus right now looking down on you guys im sure he was a great person and one day all of those blessed and that know jesus and have accepted him into our hearts join dion and god in paradise R.I.P Dion Prater we all love and miss you though some may not have known you we all still love you say hi 2 my 6 year old cousin jessa sanders please she was killed by a drunk driver while crossing the street.
A very sad story, but thank you for making this important video to show how easy accidents happen. So all you drivers out there take note, for no matter how good you think you are, this can happen to anyone, anytime. 5*
my father died 3 years ago and till this day when i dream of him hes alive and well as if it never happend. in my dream i dont no hes gone its as if hes always been around. i even had dream were i get in fights with him.
no one understands why things happen the way they do we just have to have faith and know that the person that was taken from us is in safe hands. I lost my sister when i was little and the way I see it she is alot happier where she is now, because she will never have to feel any kind of pain, I miss her very much but I know that she is always with me.
if the Father would have let him stay instead of telling him to come home with broken wipers in the first place he would still be alive. this is just my input. not pointing fingers but the evidence is clear..
Firstly, my condolences go out to both you, your family and Dion's mates. As a paramedic myself, we all too often attend accidents that involve either fatigue, speed, drinking or carelessness. Your clip was very touching, and even if one life is spared by watching this, it would be worth it. Be careful all those on the roads, for you never know when it could be you next....
Thanks mumandtwins...I think people tend to forget the "ripple effect" these unfortunate circumstances create. It's not only family n friends of the loved one lost (god bless them) but altho the ambos, the firies, the hospital staff, the cops, THEIR family etc... (continued over..)
You did a wonderful job. I'm sure Dion is proud of his Mum! I'm so glad to know you. I hope our Son's have met each other in Heaven. Drowsy/Fatigue Driving is deadly & your doing a lot to educate people! God Bless! Your Friend,
in 2009 there was 119 fatalities on South Australian Roads, as you know this is all I can do, is help educate others, the choice is theirs if they learn from it or not
Terrific tribute mumandtwins. My son just turned two years old yesterday and although his driving days are far away, time flies. Although nothing can bring your son back, as a parent I want to thank you for making these videos and doing your best to educate parents and other teens about the importance of driving safe. Hopefully parents and teens watching can get as much out of your videos as I do.
I am 22 years old, I had a bad accident a year ago with my car, thank God no one else was involved, I absolutly smashed the hole car. The road was pretty bad and there was some oil on the road cause of an other accident 3 days before, also it was raining, people think it was my fault cause Im young. Dont let people think it was hes fault, sometimes being young has nothing to do, nobody in that condition would be able to handle the car.
Words can not describe how i feel at this point.. I am so sorry to see this!
I'm 16 myself, and i am ready to start driving with my parents.. But just this week there was an horrible accident involving the older brother of a known of mine. He crashed with a semi-trailer.. The whole community is still in shock...
Again, i feel so sorry for you! May god be with you.
thankyou for your comment, if you don't feel ready for driving it isn't going to hurt you to wait until you feel ready esp after hearing of such a tragedy
wait where do you live i know a bad pepsi accident a truck with three people hit a pepsi truck head on and it burst into flames the pepsi driver lived but the three guys did not
I am sorry for all you have lost. I commend you for trying to make some good come from something so horrible. I hope it is also helping you heal. My thoughts go out to you at this time of year.
this is very sad. I am sure you were proud to have Dion in your life for 18 years. You are doing a great job showing the aftermath of a teen accident, something that words alone dont have much effect on teen drivers. this will go along way in impressing teens and adults the importance of driving well rested, and not allowing yourself to be pressured into driving when you are not up to it. Good Job on the video mumandtwins. i m so sorry Dion passed away.
People young old teenager or otherwise are still more than capable of making their own descisions... u cant say who is at fault wether it be the person who lent the car or the person behind the wheel of it.
Lets hope tho that people who watch this clip use it for their own good and play it safe while they are on the road
I had driven that car on a few occassions and I am sensible enough and experienced enough to know that car should NEVER have been allowed on the road at all, the steering was screwed,as well as many other problems with it, but what is worse is the story before this accident even happened, this was just the icing on the cake, Dion was under pressure to bring the car back to Whyalla, despite the fact he was too exhausted to drive it
Thank you for posting this. As a young driver, I never really thought about night driving as harmful. I know that it is more difficult, but I didn't think that it was that important. I will definitely keep this in mind for my driving future.
it is rather inconsiderate of his father to make him travel home in a rush... After all he'd only had his license for 2 weeks-he lacks experience- After getting my license for 2 years i still would not attempt driving home so late. to think that this could have been prevented- its sad. what a waste.. i'm sorry
I think it is very irresponsible of the father to lend the car out, to gain favour against me, still it happened, what is made worse is the fact that Dion 2 days earlier took his fathers car to Port Lincoln, the father didn't have much to say about that either, and after the accident all he could say was Dion had Experience PFFFT as if a 2 hour trip to Lincoln would give him experience on the highway after 2 weeks on P Plates the father is IGNORANT simple as that
P plate did you say! When i got my P plate i was still being tutored by my dad for like about 3 months before he was confident enough to let me drive on my own. He would let me drive his car and would lecture me all the time in attempt to correct my driving. i didnt like it at the time but it helped me a lot
I am awaiting probationary membership to be approved to join the SES. Im sure its this and many other scenarios that ANY member of any emergency organisation wish they dont have to face, but its a stark reality that it can and will happen again. I wholeheartedly hope your postings bring about more awareness of such tragedies, even if it prevents just 1 fatality, you'd have done your job. Thankyou for posting.
The accident site in the video seems to be like miles from anywhere. Just a road running through dusty gound. I have never been to Australia. Is it like that? All desert type land and no houses. It must have taken the Emergency people some time to get there.
he died on the Eyre Highway 9km southwest of Port Augusta he was approx 68km from home. People esp in Europe see Australia and look at the towns on a map or in atlas and think the towns are close together, but there are vast distances. and lots of Saltbush. Port Augusta is gateway to the outback. and arid lands we do have some pretty areas too. esp if it has been raining
I am so sorry for you loss. In July this year a friend of mine was killed with her best mate in a crash at 01:10. I am sure her friend who was driving had been tired as she had done a days work before attempting to drive to Scotland from the UK South. Some 500 miles or so.
when my dad didn't agree to let me take a 200miles trip with my car 2 month's afther i got my license because he was affraid of event's like this... i tought that it was just an excuse... now.. every day i hear of young people dieing in car crashes... make's me think twice before doing something stupid.. i was an "aggresive driver"...always speeding ...now i'm not.. thing's like this happend to friend's of mine... ore friend's of friend's... it's sad... it should make us think better.. RIP
you are very fortuneate to have had a father that actually had BALLS to tell you that whether or not you thought it was an excuse. Sadly for my son, he had a father that lives with his head in the sand, ignorant of life in general, and the realities faced. Dions father has NO BALLS all he had to do was say NO to Dion taking the car on the Highway or INSIST Dion go to my sisters or get a motel room for the night. I have no pitty for how my ex husband is feeling as a result of this accident
i'm very sorry to hear about your loss, i somehow understand your pain because my best friend died when going home after my 18yo bithday party... and for me .. being an only child... no brothers or sister's... felt like loosing my bigger brother.. he was 2years older than me.. and he was always taking chare of my sice we were kid's... but i know this doesn't match with the pain from a mother's soul when loosing a child. be strong.
thanks for your comments, recently I have been in contact with a mum who has just lost her ONLY child here, I count myself fortuneate because I have 5 other children, but a mothers loss as hard as it is, can never match a mother who has lost her only child this way. many say I am strong, but I don't think it is strong as such, more I too am sick of hearing about people loosing loved ones this way it is so needless
Very sad indeed , i honestly cant see how your ex husbands pain would be any less than yours.I have an experience similar to yours , nearly a year ago my younger brother was killed in a motor bike accident in the dark , i am a mechanic and always helped him prepare his bike for the weekends away , thursday night i got a call asking about his lights , they werent working , i didnt have time to fix them for him , friday night i got a call , he had been killed , does that put me at fault ?
I really couldn't care less how much pain my ex would feel on the loss of his son, I have known the man for many years, I know what he is capable of, and I know how he has treated not only me but his kids over the years, 3 people were responsible for Dion being on the road that time of night, one of them is dead, it is not a blame game thing, but the fact he put his son under pressure when he should have encouraged him to sleep instead of travelling the man is pure Ignorant of life in general
You said 3 people.I just wanted to know if you consider yourself as the 3rd person?Maybe his father put him under pressure to drive but maybe you didn't do anything to stop it.If we take that way of thinking makes you also responsible.
It's not that the right way to feel about the incident.I'm sure Dion would feel the same.
Keep up the great work with your videos.I'm sure that many people would think it twice before take their cars.
I did everything in my power to avoid Dion using that car at all, my ex husband and I separated 4 months earlier due to DV the ex husband was using the car to score brownie points with Dion, and keep him in favour against me the 3 people who played a part in him being on the road that time of night are Dion, his father and to a small percentage the gf as she was the reason they went out of town. this is based on the facts outlined in the coroners report. I didn't know he even left town
i totally agree with what u said in this video i my self am only 19 i have only held my Red P1 license for no more that 2 months and its such a shame that this had to happen to your son we need tougher laws to prevent this happening to young drivers
I notice you are in Germany what is sad is Dion's Oma ( yes German too) she has been very sick over the last few years, she didn't ever expect to loose her eldest grandson 4 days before her 82nd birthday no parent or grandparent should outlive their child or grandchild especially when the death is as needless as this
GRANDMAFOTTZ IS LOST FOR WORDS!!! I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO very SAD FOR YOU & YOUR FAMILY & YOU WILL ALL BE IN MY PRAYERS. LOVE & HUGS, grandmafottz.xxxooo
I would like to tell you how very very sorry I am for your loss. I also, like you, lost my oldest son in a car accident. He was 16. Although many years have now passed, I want to tell you, it won't get better, it will become somewhat easier to bear. He will always be with you in your heart. Forever. May he rest in peace and may you one day find comfort. God Bless you.
oh I know how it goes, I also lost my nephew Jamie in car accident when he was 17 yrs old in October 1999 it is always there, just somewhat easier to get through the day
What can one say when this happens. Theres no right words. They say time heals and it does but oh the hurt and loss remains. He will always be close in your heart. God called him home young, he must have needed your son. This was a special Tribute to the ones that helped God bless you.
keep your teenagers close, they may not appreciate it when you worry about them and it will be that way until they have their own children. the girlfriend survived with 2 broken legs, some internal bleeding, requiring surgery, and massive emotional issues, a lot more to this story since the accident, as a result I no longer see her, I wish her well but she really needs help, she is capable of good things, but doesn't see it because of her age
it always will hurt, nothing will ever replace the emptiness, but I do know that it gets easier to go on without him physically here, I know that from after my nephew died 8 years earlier
it was a labour of love, on the first anniversary I went out to the crash site just before 1am, 1 year after the accident, the light you see is the 1.08 am ceduna bus heading towards Adelaide, the vid was a year in the making, and I am grateful I found the right music to go with it.
We need to cherish every minute of every day, and not complain about the little things. What a terible sad thing this is. SO sorry for those involved in this.
you got my enormous respect for what you did here. even you have to carry this terrible burden you still found some grateful words for those who tried to help, that's absolutely not useful and shows your human size. all best wishes and may the time will just heal a little bit your pain.
What a terrible burden for you to carry!! My heart goes out to you and the misery that you have had since you heard. Time will ease the misery but never the loss. God bless you.
a reminder that life is short and to enjoy the luv of ure family and friends win the short time that we're here im so sorry for your loss thanx bflat 4 sharing xx
Thank you for this warning. I am so sorry for your loss. It must have been a terrible shock. It is so wonderful you are raising awareness of dangers for everyone you can through this video etc. With best wishes,
I'm so sorry for your loss, I know the tremendous hurt you have for losing a child, my step-daughter passed away at the age of 17 from cancer. The pain never goes away, you just learn to cope with it. My blessings to you and your family. Thanks Carol for sharing this.........Peg
thankyou all for sharing my video I hope you share all the videos from my nephew Jamies accident as well as my much loved son Dion, fatigue is as dangerous on the roads as drunk driving. Dion sure is missed so much here, life for me changed so much since that day.
The song is beautiful, but this is so sad. God Bless this family.5*****'s and thank you for posting. Sharing your loss might help some other young person. Thank you Carol for sending. Shirley
we all have little problems we have to deal with in life, but I am grateful that Dion didn't survive because of the nature of his injuries, I am grateful for his life, sad that he lost it, and hopeful that this helps other kids make responsible choices
Being a 16 year old driver. All teens should not be generalized as too immature to drive. Ther are simple ways to prevent tragedy. Progress from parking lots to neighborhoods to streets to highways wen learning to drive. NEVER skip a step. I also took a skidding and spinning course, and was taught to never drive tired, recklessly, or unfocused. I also drive a 340HP sportscar, but still have 18 months of safe ticket/crash-less driving under my belt. Teach teens smart driving and theyll stay safe.
I was actually ina head on car crash 3 years ago with my ex-girlfriend. I actually persuaded her to stick with her old car instead of getting a brand new one that she couldn't really afford. Had she listened to me, I'm pretty sure what with the flat bonnet and safety features on the old car that neither of us would have been here today. I guess I got lucky. My condonenses for you loss though. A very moving video.
Why things like this happen seems so pointless & it happens every day, its like the world is a model of statistics, but its much more than that, its people struggling w/ the hardships that exist, hurting, hating, loving & healing. You've taken the pain & used it to warn & help others avoid the same heartache. Words cannot express sorrow for your loss ,~_~, I commend you & pray for your strength to keep faith & know your efforts are NOT in vein, bless You & your Family Geniene...
it is intended for it to make an impact thanks for your comments it is such a hard job that emergency services do, and I don't think they get enough credit for it
Mumandtwins, you are a great mother to your son Dion, the fact that he called home says it all, I am proud of your son for trying to do his best. We trust that he is in a good place and one day you will meet him again.
thanks for your comment, one thing I would have preferred is that he had actually contacted me, as I had no idea he had gone out of town, I would not have advised him to do that trip. I think his father knew about the trip. Ignorance on his part
wanna see the report NO ALCOHOL NO DRUGS NO SPEED was involved in this accident just fatigue the kid was 18 years old legally an adult, but still a very immature teen driver
Always very sad. Theres not an emergency crew I know whose heart doesnt plummet as we approach these scenes. Your strength gives me strength to be better at what I do.
I'm sorry for your loss.Good job of you put this to everyone especially the young drivers.i can't imagine if losing someone we love very much.God bless you.
i have suggestion for the newbie driver, please avoid high-powered cars.
there is a long list I can add to your suggestions to newbie drivers, the heap my son was driving was an XF ford falcon so it had age against it, and therefore none of the saftey items to protect him, it was 6 cylinders, so IMHO too powerful for a young driver, what bugs me is Dion wasn't doing anything wrong, just bringing back his dads car, and I see the hoons that are currently getting caught here and those who drive DUI and PCA are still alive to do it again
I am so sorry for your loss. It was very nice of you to put this together to send a message out to everyone... yes, it CAN happen to anyone. I hope some people take extra precautions, be more careful, use their heads better and so on because of this video. Thanks again.
Trust that your son is in a good place. I trust that one day we shall all meet again.
That was very sad, but also very beautiful.. i was in a similar crash in 2004, only had my licence for 4 weeks, i was completely at fault, even though i wasn't doing anything stupid before the accident, it still changed my life forever.
I am so sorry I lost a step son on September 13th, 2011 and its hard

I will be sending the link to my son who turns 19 in a week.
As of his b'day he will have a full license but due to his circumstances he's only driven a few times in the 2yrs he had his P's.
I'm sure your video will leave a huge impact on my son who thinks he's experienced.
Thankyou xx

mumandtwins 3 years ago
I wouldnt mind visiting Australia. I like the look of the arid lands. But you have poisonous snakes and spiders in Australia?
thekaratechop 3 years ago
yep we sure do, LOL the only one to worry about in this area is the red back spider, white tail spider and Western Brown Snake

Do you get these in the Bath Tub!?

I have no pitty for how my ex husband is feeling as a result of this accident
mumandtwins 3 years ago
i'm very sorry to hear about your loss, i somehow understand your pain because my best friend died when going home after my 18yo bithday party... and for me .. being an only child... no brothers or sister's... felt like loosing my bigger brother.. he was 2years older than me.. and he was always taking chare of my sice we were kid's... but i know this doesn't match with the pain from a mother's soul when loosing a child. be strong.
partyboy174 3 years ago
thanks for your comments, recently I have been in contact with a mum who has just lost her ONLY child here, I count myself fortuneate because I have 5 other children, but a mothers loss as hard as it is, can never match a mother who has lost her only child this way. many say I am strong, but I don't think it is strong as such, more I too am sick of hearing about people loosing loved ones this way it is so needless
mumandtwins 3 years ago
Very sad indeed , i honestly cant see how your ex husbands pain would be any less than yours.I have an experience similar to yours , nearly a year ago my younger brother was killed in a motor bike accident in the dark , i am a mechanic and always helped him prepare his bike for the weekends away , thursday night i got a call asking about his lights , they werent working , i didnt have time to fix them for him , friday night i got a call , he had been killed , does that put me at fault ?
m1975c 3 years ago
I really couldn't care less how much pain my ex would feel on the loss of his son, I have known the man for many years, I know what he is capable of, and I know how he has treated not only me but his kids over the years, 3 people were responsible for Dion being on the road that time of night, one of them is dead, it is not a blame game thing, but the fact he put his son under pressure when he should have encouraged him to sleep instead of travelling the man is pure Ignorant of life in general
mumandtwins 3 years ago
You said 3 people.I just wanted to know if you consider yourself as the 3rd person?Maybe his father put him under pressure to drive but maybe you didn't do anything to stop it.If we take that way of thinking makes you also responsible.
It's not that the right way to feel about the incident.I'm sure Dion would feel the same.
Keep up the great work with your videos.I'm sure that many people would think it twice before take their cars.
Charilaos88 3 years ago
I did everything in my power to avoid Dion using that car at all, my ex husband and I separated 4 months earlier due to DV the ex husband was using the car to score brownie points with Dion, and keep him in favour against me the 3 people who played a part in him being on the road that time of night are Dion, his father and to a small percentage the gf as she was the reason they went out of town. this is based on the facts outlined in the coroners report. I didn't know he even left town

Oh my God that's horrible.
All I can do is offer my condolences.
I know it still hurts.

Ignorance on his part

that's why there are bad parents and good parents let there children drive drunk at night!

wanna see the report NO ALCOHOL NO DRUGS NO SPEED was involved in this accident just fatigue the kid was 18 years old legally an adult, but still a very immature teen driver

I'm sorry for your loss.Good job of you put this to everyone especially the young drivers.i can't imagine if losing someone we love very much.God bless you.
i have suggestion for the newbie driver, please avoid high-powered cars.
aldo97 3 years ago
there is a long list I can add to your suggestions to newbie drivers, the heap my son was driving was an XF ford falcon so it had age against it, and therefore none of the saftey items to protect him, it was 6 cylinders, so IMHO too powerful for a young driver, what bugs me is Dion wasn't doing anything wrong, just bringing back his dads car, and I see the hoons that are currently getting caught here and those who drive DUI and PCA are still alive to do it again
mumandtwins 3 years ago
I am so sorry for your loss. It was very nice of you to put this together to send a message out to everyone... yes, it CAN happen to anyone. I hope some people take extra precautions, be more careful, use their heads better and so on because of this video. Thanks again.
Trust that your son is in a good place. I trust that one day we shall all meet again.

That was very sad, but also very beautiful.. i was in a similar crash in 2004, only had my licence for 4 weeks, i was completely at fault, even though i wasn't doing anything stupid before the accident, it still changed my life forever.
