  • Hey it's Spencer the silver engine!

  • "I read the news today oh boy, ten thousand holes in blackburn, lancashire"

I don't know about holes, but thats one damn fine loco there.

  • free black ops lobbys + mw2 lobbys here /watch?v=NQtYkMzuGtg

  • Valves lifting? Must be a Stratford fireman, Donnie men wouldn't waste the coal!

  • I wonder what the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust would do if prompted to make an A4 :3

  • I wonder if they would ever do a locomotive exchange. I suppose not, but I live near Cheyenne WY where the UP 844 runs and I would love to see an A4 running on straight, slightly sloped downhill grade. She could really open up then. I am a steam nut, so this is really cool.

  • Very good video. Whalley is a great place to see them, albeit at a leisurely pace over the viaduct! The A4s really are the business end of high speed steam locos though and USA certainly does not disappoint when giving it some on the mainline. Not sure what the poster before me is referring to?? Regards Dave

  • just awesome... this steam at the end... great.

  • wow! So many views! An excellent video, never heard of Whalley viaduct! Looks nice! 5* and fav'd

  • Nice shot on the viaduct!

  • the A4 loco, Supermarine Spitfire, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Range Rover, everything the Brits make are beautiful!

  • @rcfp2006 Well I cant disagree with you having owned a Jag many years ago The only trouble with it was, it would pass anything on the road but a petrol station. LoL.

You might like to take a look at 'Sir Nigel's Big day' On my channel. It gives a very close-up view of this A4 loco with its curious but distinctive 3 cylinder beat. The 'Gresley' beat. sometimes likened to an asthmatic kettle drum.

    Hugh

  • my 2 year old spotted this train as "spencer" from thomas the tank engine fame... "but green" he said. blew my mind.

  • @prkrmk haha - i'm looking forward to showing my 4yo this video for that very reason!

  • Very enjoyable footage. Nice work

  • Thanks Gordon1066. There are a couple more vids of A4's elsewhere on my channel. Hope you enjoy.

    Hugh.

  • A4's, one of my all time top 3 favorite loco classes in the world, but they're still funny looking.

  • Well, this is for aerodynamics.Basically, wind gets trapped with a front that isn't sloped. But the A4's design along with other electric engines can make it so air flows over the top,and thus it's shape.

  • I do thank you for the explanation. I recall the first time I saw a photo of Mallard in about 1968, it just hit me as peculiar looking. I've been to the U.K. several times and even ridden over the Settle and Carlisle behind (then) 4498 and walked through 60009's corridor tender at Bewdley. I built an etched brass 00 A4 model from a Proscale kit. Even bought a Gage 1 Aster Silver Link. Tony Filby at the NRM matched the three shades of gray for me. But I still think they are funny looking.

  • TrainSpotterX invites you to view trains of australia .... over 100 videos to view.

  • What is power?

    What is torque?

That is angle of timing of intake and outtake valve?

For much timing could ba changed?

    Bore and stroke of cylinder?

    Pressure on cylinder?

    Max speed?

    Coal consumption at full throttle?

Acceleration to 62mph alone and with full train?

    Does it use overheated steam?

  • Not thinking much of the fireman. The cock lifted how many times?

  • Just lovely. Great vid. Love the scenery and the composition. Exceptional.

  • Whats a beatiful steam locomotive!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • these steam locos are so so so horny, they are like women: hot box and tender behind...

  • how many Cylinders does this Locomotive have?

  • Three mate

  • it has 3 cylinders

  • thanks you, movies is good, 5★★★★★

  • 0:00 - 0:55 is there too much pressure in the boiler? Looks frightening

  • Its the safety valve, when the limit of pressure in the boiler is reached, it kicks in to release it. its perfectly normal, not seeing it would be scary.

  • I know this, but there was steam released all the time, so I thought " How much pressure must be in there, thats scary"

  • 28 Ft-lb psi

Enough to pull an 89 ton train anyway!

  • I don't understand----in America when the locomotive stops the crew jumps up on the machine and beats it with ball peen hammers. Some sort of ritual I guess. With all that schroud how can the boys have fun?

  • totally fab photo op for the locals

aldo I was blown away by the historical viaduct

    totally awesome

  • Well, we know her pop valve works!

  • great vid 5*

  • Union Has To Be My Fravroute A4, She Is Just the Best!

    Thanks For Uplaoding!

  • Very potent locomotive,,,Trains today are more androgynic,,,

  • Blowing off!!!

  • very well taken video thanks for sharing

  • Awesome! You can hear it breathing on the viaduct.

  • cool

  • hey for a fireman to be so careless with his energy and have the safety valve let out so much energy ...

  • which year is the train from?

  • The A4 class (35 in all) were built from about 1935 to 1939 and remained in use until superceded by diesel traction in the early 1960s. 6 survive. The one in the British national railway museum (Mallard) holds the official world steam speed record. There are 2 in the national railway museums of Canada and the USA, and three (including this one) currently in main line running order in the UK.

  • safety valve is blowing off mightily..must have agreat fireman!

    great vid thanks!

  • A work of beauty. What a Machine..Thanks

  • Muito bom. eu também tenho alguns filmes (movie) ou (peliculas) de trens no youtube. para assisti-los é só digitar (clicar) FARINA e TREM. Obrigado.

  • I remember this gorgeous train passing by every week at Larbert Station just outside Stirling.

I even sat twice in the cabin and was allowed to shovel some coal into the boiler when I was just a wee lad.

The design is still to this day absolutely fantastic and so, so sleek.

The only other type to come close in its beauty was the Duchess class.

My heart still flutters when I hear the loco approaching in the distance.

  • Great video that really captures the magic of steam, my 2year old grandson was spellbound

  • Is this engine the same class as the "Mallard"?

  • It most certainly is michigandon. It took over a train at Edinburgh, coming up from London this week, took it on to Perth where it was doubleheaded with a Black 5 for the journey to Inverness.

  • I need to make it over to your country one of these days! You guys have mainline steam excursions the likes of which we *used* to have here 20-30 years ago. I have seen the Dwight D Eisenhower as well as the Dominion of Canada before...at the museums in Green Bay and Montreal, respectively.

  • holy crap, that damn thing's a rock concert on rails! i've seen electric transit perform here much worse :P

  • u cant say anything bad about a classic ; )

  • u cant say anything bad about a classic ; )

  • bring back the steam :)

  • 2 of these beauties will be in action over the weekend of the 12th of April, on the North Britain runs. 'Bittern' will bring a loaded train up from london. '71000' will take over from York to Edinburgh. Then this loco, 'USA' will haul the train to Inverness.

What a fantastic prospect!!! I cant wait, LoL.

  • i wont see it cuz im from the southwest (bristol) :( sounds like its gunna be good:)

  • Well we're coming down to Bristol in May with 71000, Duke of Gloucester, hopefully for a repeat of last years sucessful Devon Banks runs.

    Hugh.

  • tell me where in poland we use steam locomotive only on special occasions or historical tours, but i realy woud prefer to use them daily cause they are beautiful

  • that whistle gives me chills

  • thanks...just awesome..my two little boys loved watching this...as did I! What is it about these beautiful machines that is so fascinating? I bet you could give me many answers! Cheers

  • Dont start me off, I'd never stop, LoL

  • Steam still in daily use in Poland.

  • Over 1000 steam locos survive in the UK.Several more are rediscovered every year, lurking in scrapyards under mountains of scrap.

  • You mean Dai Woodham's scrapyard at Barry in South Wales? No, the last locos were removed in 1987.Around 220 locos were saved for restoration from this scrapyard.

  • Does the UK still have that huge yard full of retired steam engines? I saw somewhere here on youtube where one was pulled and was being restored.

  • Australia has the most steam engines.

  • Who are you kidding? We've got bugger-all compared to the U.K or some Euopean countries. Don't forget, South Africa still has regular steam-hauled freight and passenger trains.

  • a ludicrous suggestion. the UK easily has the most preserved engines, probably the most ones in steam and might even have the most overall.

  • you know that thy arnt from SOUTH AFRICA thay are from britin

  • is this a Gresley?

  • It most certainly is E|TAG, One of Sir Nigels finest

  • very good. my brother got a video of the USA going out of Bath on its way to Bristol today on the Victoria - Bristol - Victoria service and i might go down and get a video of it tonight coming back. yeh gr8 vid

  • Love the English steamers, sleek, lite, and well,a steamer. But always hated the bumpers that protrude from the frames of all rail stock.More of an afterthought than purpose.Cowcatchers, especially chicken coup, look far better.

  • there called buffers, and on rolling stock without auto couplers there a must or els the corners of the carrages would destroy each other

  • Thank you,I was not aware that English rails are not auto coupler equiped.Would then also make the buffers a lifesaver in the switch yard.

  • ive seen a few ppl nearly sandwiched by buffers, they can be like a horizontal waffle iron if you not careful when shunting

  • Could imagin,if one is having a really bad day, them buffers willnot forgive.

  • I keep returning to this; what a beautiful machine! Original name Osprey, number 4488 in a name series to represent speed and strength, but entered service as now named, number 60009 is British Railways. Great vid!!!

  • que preciosura de maquina... aca en chile se deberian traer algunas

  • UOSA spent it's entire working life at Edinburgh Haymarket shed except the period from 1963-66 where it worked the 3 hour expresses from Glasgow to Aberdeen when shedded at Aberdeen ferryhill

  • Thank you for that Jimmy. Would you, by any chance be from north of the border?

Theres no finer sight than this beatiful A4 crossing the FORTH bridge and it is owned by a Scotsman.

    Hugh.

  • Do they allow Africans to drive this loco? Or are they just firemen?

  • Dont be SARKY. LoL

Its name derives from colonial days when we used to have an empire!.

  • yes i know- but I remember in the 1980s they renamed it for a bit to be pc!

  • when was this BTW.

  • Oh its a couple or 3 years ago, ProSneaky. It was heding bk to Derby after earlier coming down the S&C. Most rail tours going or coming back from the S&C cross the Viaduct at Whalley, making it an interesting location to film them.

    Hugh

  • Ah my local station, not seen any locos like this stop here before, where was this heading to?

  • I used to see UoSA probably on the Glasgow (Buchanan Street) to Aberdeen line.

  • Well its recently been operating around Scotland again, on the GREAT BRITON railtour, Of coarse its owner is Scottish, so he likes the loco to be seen on Scottish metals as often as is possible.

  • Actually, there IS a cherry tree at Cherry Tree station, or at least close to it. It's a cherry blossom tree in my Dad's front garden which faces Cherry Tree station, but in only blooms in summer of course - by the way - great vid - thanks for sharing

  • Thank you for clearing that up, it been worrying people for weeks.

Glad you enjoyed the video, but of coarse you would have a ringside seat.

  • Why are sports cars thought of as cool? This is style and power personified! Why are those who admire such wonderful things derided so much?

  • Looks like a good spot to film from. I'll look on Multimap.

  • awesome stuff.. extreme machine...

  • Any Cherry Tree's at Cherry Tree station ?

  • no, but at the next stop Mill Hill theres mills on hills.
