Hey Tom!Really enjoyed the song, don't think I ever heard it before tho....listened to Roy's poem about your trip.I don't think you ever told me that story.
I think I'm going to see if I can still learn your songs by ear. I'll let you know how that comes out. Take care my old friend, John Crumet
This addresses something universal among creative people. Realizing at a young age that you needed more space, either physically or mentally, probably expanded your creative range. Certainly, rejecting the idea of change or movement is just contrary to the nature of an artist.
Thanks so much, blue eyes, I appreciate your comments. Be sure to see the two video responses to the song. They were written by Roy Bentley, my friend with the 1964 Ford Galaxie.
Hey Tom! I love this one. Roy sent it to me-boy I owe him one. You're great. Whenever I go back to hometown,it never is the same but the memories are.Thank goodness.Left home at 14 and have had more times of my life ever since! Some of my best work was done before I left my childhood and some after I brought it with me.LOL.Wow! I love your song and will visit often Lisa, M.O.M.
If I might be so bold as to respond to this: I was there when Tom was 16, and he was as clearly one-of-a-kind then as now.
If you were 17 and heard this come flying out of the mouth of your closest friend, what would you think? I thought I was one lucky sonofa--you guessed it!
Hi Tom : Great to see the background on this song - I hope you do make a video telling the rest of the story - it sounds interesting!! 5 stars and best wishes, Sunbeam :)
i can imagine a mamas and papas style rendition of this one...all swinging acoustic guitars and tambourines with lots of echo on them, and girls doing folky 60's style harmonies...its a nice song...can you hear what i hear?
A wonderful song which gives a good mood, very melodic - really well done: ) you are a brilliant songwriter and performer, always good to see and hear your songs.5*****
Beautiful song, from the sweet melody to the lyrics.I really like the part that goes: "Did I tell you that tomorrow I must leave again, I left my hometown long ago." I find that to be very true, once you uproot yourself from home it becomes easier to always be on the road. The first time is always the most difficult. Thank you for sharing it, it was a wonderful glimpse of a day in the life of a talented 16 year-old. I really like how you expressed the visions of gold through the fields of grain.
Thank you, Ivy. It's easy to forget how daunting it is to leave the nest and be tested by the world, and yet sometimes it feels like we face that 'leaving' everyday of our lives.
That's some really deep thinking for a 16 year old! Very impressive! I like the song a lot and can definitely see a 70s road trip happening in this one. :)
Nice to see you also, Tom!! Your music is wonderful! I have lost touch with so many people since the share feature got discontinued. YouTube/Google has all but ruined the site and that is fairly typical of all sites that partner with Google.
April 1971, is the date I have on the original copy of the song. Can you believe it's been that long?!? I don't remember playing it in a car, but maybe it WAS on the Santa Fe trip...You must do a poem for YT, man!
You played this for me in 1970, Tom; I think it was in Dustshiner... or in the Galaxie, I can't remember which--but it was in a car that I first heard this.
